Apple has recently released iPod Software Update 1.3 for the fifth generation (5G and 5.5G) iPods. Unfortunately the only information from the package is that it contains “Bug Fixes”. Some owners have reported it fixes a problem where the iPod would stop displaying songs or device content.

Personally I believe this is Apple’s attempt at polishing off an older product before letting go and moving on, however others have speculated this update addresses some of the new iTunes features such as movie rentals. If any readers have installed the update and discover anything new let us know by commenting.

    WWDC08 on the Horizon

    By Colonel, in OSx86,

Yes, it looks like every iDeveloper's favorite time of year is once again quickly approaching. Apple has opened its doors to WWDC registrations. This year, Apple will be covering three main topics at the convention; the "Mac Track", which covers Cocoa and Leopard development, the "iPhone Track" which teaches you about creating feature-rich applications using the iPhone SDK, and a new "Information Technologies Track", which helps IT professionals and other system admins about the power and usability of Mac OS X Server.

WWDC08 will take place through June 9th to the 13 at the Moscone West in San Francisco, CA.

    The iPhone...in x86?

    By REVENGE, in OSx86,

Straight from the rumor mill, here's a slide from an Intel presentation at CeBIT 2008:

Notice something familiar? A Moorestown based iPhone in two years perhaps? Yeah, dream on.

After many months of waiting, jailbreaking, and crying ourselves to sleep mode, the iPhone SDK is finally upon us! Having the ability to write apps for our iPhones with the very own tools and SDK that Apple itself used would make writing apps for the iPhone so much easier, right? Well, maybe not... As most of us know, some of the great things about Jailbreaking was the ability to use AIM, MSN, Gtalk, and having it run as a background process as you do other things on your iPhone. You could go do something in Safari, change a song, watch a video, or something else and still receive IMs in the background. With the new SDK, your apps are now limited to what they can do, making it so they can not run as a background process. This means that if you want to change a song while you're using AIM, you have to sign out, change your song, then sign back in. Now, there are workarounds for this, but since that would violate the iPhone Interface Guidelines, it would be forbidden from being put on the AppStore.

Another limitation to the new SDK includes the "you can't make plugins using other APIs than our own" rule, which would stop any Safari plugins in it's tracks such as Java or a 3rd party flash, as well as stopping any sort of emulator for the iPhone from being created.

Is this fair of Apple? Maybe or maybe not. Hopefully in future releases and revisions of the SDK and documentation, they'll be more flexible on what we can and can't do.

    iPhone SDK Released

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

As planned, the iPhone SDK was released today, along with a promise about a new 2.0 update to the iPhone software. There are a lot of new features that are actually planned for this new 2.0 update. First of all, there are a host of new enterprise features that companies will love. Secondly, we will get a AppStore, where you will be able to buy and download applications that Apple makes available. It kind of looks like installer doesn't it?

Unexpectedly, Apple also demoed a few apps that it and 3rd party developers wrote. Most of these were games, which looked fun I might add. They also said that many apps can be easily created in "under 10,000" lines of code. Now I know you must be saying "Boy gee, I've written papers longer than that." Good for you, but that is very short for an application.

Currently, you can download the SDK for free, although the site is acting slow and my download isn't done yet (damn you 1.5MB/s download speed!). You can also apply for a shot at the beta 2.0 software. If luck is on my side tomorrow, my step-father's company will get a copy and I will have a 2.0 iPhone.

    P2P on the iPhone

    By Numberzz, in OSx86,

Well, we knew that someone would do it eventually, and the ones who did it were the folks over at wickedpsyched.net. What they did was take the popular Mac OS X torrent application, Transmission, and ported it over to the iPhone's ARM processor. As of now, it doesn't have a GUI, but it does work. All you need to do when you are in Terminal on the iPhone is ./transmissioncli (name of torrent) and it starts downloading. If you don't feel comfortable with Terminal you might want to wait until someone sticks a nice GUI on it.

Along with the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros, Apple released a new update to the iPhones firmware: 1.1.4. The release is said to only contain bug changes, so it is a very small update. So small in fact, that Zibri's jailbreak method still works. That's right, you can upgrade your touch screen device, and use the same jailbreak method that worked with 1.1.3. This is the first update that has come out of Apple that didn't break the jailbreak method. Zibri still doesn't want people to upgrade yet, for he needs to test it out, in case of something bad happening.

    MacBook Pros:
    $1999. Macbook Pro 15" 2.4GHz / 2GB RAM / 200GB 5400RPM / 256MB VRAM
    $2499. Macbook Pro 15" 2.5GHz / 2GB RAM / 250GB 5400RPM / 512MB VRAM

The new MacBook Pros feature a MultiTouch trackpad, similar to the one on the new MacBook Air. I can't tell if the Trackpad on the new MacBook Pro is larger than the previous generation, but comparing it to mine, it does look a little wider.
