WWDC Roundup

Alex Oughton

Steve Jobs has just finished his WWDC keynote, and so it's time for InsanelyMac's roundup of the biggest Apple news from this year's conference!

Gaming

EA have announced that they are to return to publishing games for the Mac. Command and Conquer 3, Battlefield 2142, Need For Speed Carbon, and Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix will be released for the Mac in July, with Madden 08 and Tiger Woods 08 also due for release. EA have announced that future games will see simultaneous releases for the Mac with their PC versions.

Leopard

Apple announced several as-yet unseen interface enhancements for Leopard, including a new dock and menu bar. The Finder has also been updated with an iTunes-esque sidebar and coverflow mode. Improved integration with .mac brings the "Back To My Mac" feature, allowing .mac subscribers to send files to their Mac from any Internet-connected Mac. "Stacks" was also introduced, bringing a new method for file and application organisation.

Check out a summary of Leopard's new features here.

iPhone Release Date, And Developer Tools

Apple announced that the iPhone would be released on June 29th in the United States. It was also announced that third-party developers would be able to develop limited applications for the iPhone, which would run within the mobile version of Safari.

Safari For Windows

Perhaps the biggest and most surprising announcement, Safari is being released for Windows XP and Vista systems. Citing their expertise with bringing iTunes to millions of Windows users, Apple believes it has a fair shot at the PC browser market, and hopes to offer PC users another glimpse into the benefits of Apple software.

Both Mac and Windows users can take part in the Safari 3 Beta, free of charge.

I was waiting for this to be on the Front Page!

Safari 3.0 is OK in Mac (pretty much no difference, just a few tweaks here in there). In Windows, it looks like iTunes mated with Safari ^^

Leopard looks incredible. I hope that the menu bar's transparency is adjustable, or eliminate-able, because I don't know if I like that.

The new Finder looks great.

iPhone...enh... I don't like it period

Heh, http://developer.apple.com/ . Still the old site :weight_lift:

Yes, apologies for the slight delay. It's my sister's birthday, so I was out! :thumbsup_anim:

As for Leopard, I totally agree. Shaping up to be a great release, in my opinion.

and no mention of ZFS?

Indeed, not a word. But then there are "over 300" new features, and Steve only mentioned 10 of them.

This is a very useful link. Lists more than the keynote did, including official confirmation of an AppleTV-esque Front Row. Think I'll add the link to the article.

Hey everyone,

I see that Safari 3 is only compatible with 10.4.9. A lot of OS X86'ers don't have 10.4.9, but 10.4.8. I made another version of the Safari 3.0 installation that allows it to install on 10.4.8. Here is the link:

Safari 3.0 for 10.4.8

(Technically this isn't warez, because it is free, and beta, software).

Enjoy.

i think there was some sort of contract tho. i didn't read it, but i assume it has stuff about not editing it. i asked all these guys at the applestoreabout modding 10.5 to run on g3's and they all said it was ilegal.

This has ruined my day, i was actually looking for some changes in leopard, but it all seems like nitpicking. "whooo, they have transparency, i couldnt do that without shapeshifter, and whooo stacks, that cant be done in tiger". Meh time to switch back over to *nix

although i dont really like linux i am also disappointed in the updates today. it seems like just making things look a little prettier. i was hoping for something along the lines of Jobs officially announcing that they had ZFS booting, something more along the lines something that is a big improvement, not just little things like Kiko said.

I think they had to yank some features at last minute.

No mention of:

- ZFS

- Resolution Independence

- iLife

- iWork

*sigh*

I know, Resloution Independence was going to be so cool!

I agree, and I was a little disappointed, too. But let's not forget that it was a show

for the ADC so why should they focus things on hardware.

I also think that we maybe will discover the advantages of the new Finder when

we actually use it. The coverflow was stretched to maximum etc etc. But I think

it can definitely improve the workflow to have a quickview for all the documents.

With my little bit o messing with Safari I have found it pretty difficult to use. It does indeed load faster than firefox in windows, but its just not as user friendly in many ways. I also don't like the new look, too dark for a web browser. i feel like it is hard to see the tabs. granted it is still beta, but i really hope the fix it up a bit more before the final release.

The only thing that realllly bothers me is that it can't open links that open to another window into tabs. the option may be buried in the custom settings, but it wasn't in the normal preferences. Ill stick with Firefox till they fix that.

Does anyone agree with me that the interface on tiger is simply a design FAILURE? Look at shape of the dock and the transparency! Ugly!

Although its great to have more Macs games and I know why they do it this way, native ports would be better.

Cider/Crossover ports always seem to have a few small glitches.

Considering they are using Cider it will be interesting to see if they try to charge the same higher price that Mac versions usually do.
