Maxxuss has disappeared. The sites he once updated with patches and materials are either outdated or offline. He has not visited our forum since March 18th. Letters are left unresponsive. It seems the man who was rapidly building his name as one of our time's most notorious hackers is simply gone.

So what happened? There have been several times in the past when he has been dormant or otherwise quiet – in these cases, we haven’t reported on it since it is normal for there to be a lull in the action. Sensationalism is something we try to keep to a minimum.

But this is more than an extended vacation. OS X 10.4.6 has come and gone… yet no word from the once-resident OSx86 hacker. Indeed, others have now taken his place in releasing patches for the new builds.

There are a few possibilities. It’s conceivable (although somewhat unlikely) that he simply decided to leave the hacking of OS X on PCs to others. He also could have been hired by Apple. Or sued. Or jailed.

What’s most surprising is that we have heard nothing in so long. Granted, hiring and arresting are both good reasons to break communications, but the whole situation is somewhat odd. We haven’t even heard anything about his other hacking exploits, like we did when he broke the Skype-Intel collusion.

So wither Maxxuss? Who knows. He is a sterling example of a controversial figure – a Robin Hood loved by many and hated by some.

While the debate about your work rages on, Maxxuss, here’s hoping this article finds you well.

Just by the way, the maxxuss sites are really down now. Just check around, I seem to be getting to the same russian page through all the links.

Max is an alien, he is sent on earth because of this movie: "independance day". Aliens were scared that they may catch a virus next time they try an invasion.

it's just that now we don't know what to expect when they come around...??

Will they be able to defend from viruses on intel Macs, or the american goverment will move onto linux, because linux is not for humans, well at least it's not humane... :D

The aliens will resort to Plan 9 before the humans ever fold.

I really do believe Maxxuss is on some weird unkonwn island. He has a superfast broadband connection from an island nearby(like some other guy in this forum). He just took a vacation to hunt for food, and maybe go to mainland. :D

Speaking of Viruses and Independance Day.

When I first saw the movie, I was confounded by the unreality of using a computer virus to destroy the Aliens...

But when I watched it again, I realized something: Humans had been working with that crashed ship for decades, and they'd completely disassembled it's operating code.

One key advantage for Operating Systems against viruse makers is for the developers of the operating system to keep their code secure. The less someone knows about how your operating system works, the less you need fear malicious software. Well, this was the Alien's undoing; They were overconfident. They didnt invest in developing antivirus software that could be run from a central location. And why should they? Everyone they've ever faced had been exterminated to get to the resources they needed. No one had the time to expend on reverse-engineering their operating system.

Sound Familiar?!

I thought of the same explanation gwprod12... but then I realized that the aliens probably would have made some advancements in a few decades.... I mean are we still running win3.1? :-p

Of course, you're talking about a few decades in our time... but given the time-space continuum curvature caused by navigating at the speed of light, probably there were only a few months in treir time... and if their sofware was made by someone like M$, there's no doubt that they didn't even have the time for a security update...

Very interesting point, BigBogus06. I'm sure one day we'll all find out who maxxuss really is and what his name means.

Yes, I kept my computer online now for calculating 6 month, 24/7. And now, I know what Maxxuss means EXACTLY.

Even Google ranked me on top for that Result :D

No, but we're still running Win2K (albeit with a nice cartoony overlay), and will be well into 2007. In fact, I be the majority of Wintel machines will still be running Win2k (as XP or 2003 or whatever) into 2010.

(and... if you want to get REALLY technical, you'd use NT 3.5 as your arguent... which will still be able to log into most windows domains as a workstation well into 2015 and beyond. Not really as far-fetched as it looks at first glance)

I agree. I think the next time we will see him will be when 10.5 come out. He probably figures that we can manage it on our own until then.

Let's hope he will be back once Leopard is unleashed.

I wonder what SemjaZa is doing... Last time I read of him, he was trying to hack the 10.4.5 and 10.4.6 kernels.

I'm starting to buy into the whole 'he was an apple employee' bit a litlte more every week that he is gone. I mean it fits perfectly, he sets out to get all the people started and we all depend on him, then when the updates start rolling out we will be left in the dust and all of us that would never have bought a mac in the first place (not me, have PB and MDD G4) love OSX so much now we go out and buy the actual thing.

i doubt that.. why would an apple employee start a ball rolling that could potentially never quit.

10.4.7 just came out.. already fixed up and everything for hackintoshs with intels

granted 10.5 might be a hurdle to get by just as the whole start of this project was, but i doubt itll stop the people who are just as skilled as maxxuss from coming out of the wood-work to serve the cause.. that is of course if he doesnt actually come back anytime before then

yea its a great tactic to get customers. when apple released the intel macs, apple also "released" osx86 with the mythos maxxuss. we all love osx but when leopard comes out theres no maxxuss to crack it. so what can we do? throw away our hackintoshs to buy a real mac and apples tactic worked.

btw microsoft released copys of windows 95 on the net (usenet?) to make it popular and make windows the strongest os on the pc marked...
