Our New Forum Structure

Swad

After careful thought and a ton of suggestions from everyone, we've gone ahead and rearranged the forum structure to make things easier to find, as well as to make way for all the new interest in the Macintels!

The biggest change is that there are now two forums for talking about OS X – one on Macs (due to the advent of the Macintels) and one on PCs. This accomplishes several things, not the least of which is simplicity: it’s now very easy to know where posts go, based on where you’re running OS X. Also, the Genius Bar will be transformed into the one-stop place to get started in understanding the world of OSx86.

We also added “Real Life,” “Patches and Tweaks,” and “Dual Booting” forums along with a few other features to make your life a little easier. We want to become the smartest and most accessible Mac forum around, so keep doing what you’re doing – posting!

Also, be sure to stay tuned in the next few weeks. We have a lot of exciting things coming down the pipe (including a celebration for our 20,000th member!). Plenty of fun times ahead.

Great job, Mash, as usual.

I really like the new structure and I think the "Mac" forum is a great addition that's been a long time coming.

One question - how is the new Reviews forum different from the Genius Bar?

Thanks Ranger.

The reviews forum is just for reviews of a product or service. Those used to go into the Genius Bar, but now the GB is just for guides, etc.

I like the layout Mash...It's pretty nice, easy to navigate. Kudos! :(

Question though...Successes/failures will go in the either the PC/Mac forum, right? I cant remeber who said it, but most of the success stories turn into a plea for help anyways, so they'd fit in there...

Yeah, that was me who said they end up as a plea for help. :(

They should probably go in either forum, depending on what the platform is. Also, that allows both successful people and those with issues to be closer to each other, which helps with info sharing.

Looks good so far :thumbsup_anim:

I'll take a closer look tomorrow and give you a better assessment of the changes

It's hard to be objective when your viewing the site through beer goggles

You added a spotlight-like search!

It doesn't look exactly like spotlight, but you did a great job. It keeps the applish-minimalistic style. Now that i think of a, a clunky blue spotlight bar would've looked weird. This looks much cleaner.

Dude, you pulled it off! *bows*

Misuse of genius bar. In less than 24 hours, two unappropriate thread has propped up in the genius bar. They're people asking "questions". Whereas that board is supposed to be used for sharing knowledge and posting guide. I think there needs to be some correction before it goes out of hand.

I don't think that board should be near the top. Should put another one more geared towards installing/asking inquires first. Actually the old format was good, with the installation up there, and the genius guide somewhere below. It helped me out alot, get the basics down first (in front of my face) then at a later date when the basic is done, go onto the genius bar.

I know, all the staff have been moving plenty of posts from the wrong places over the last couple of days. Folks will take a while to get used to the new structure and it seems that people just drop questions almost anywhere anyway. We will keep trying to educate everyone and maybe they'll get the idea. Thanks for spotting the inappropriate posts and letting us know.

It's funny that you should mention this, because I actually just noticed the same thing (before reading this) and cleaned it out. I also changed the rules thread to include steps for actually using it.

The point of the Genius Bar is actually what you're talking about, netrat! We want people, like you or anyone else, to write simple guides for n00bs. THEN they can go to the other forum for more specific questions. That's why it's up top - eventually it will become the most important forum.

I have a question about the board layout. I hate to trouble you guys over something so basic but I figured this would be the most logical place to post. I love this forum but I don't know how to set the board so all the posts are visible in a thread. It's driving me nuts having to click on every reply to read it instead of just scrolling down like I'm used to. I tried to look in "My Controls" under "Board Settings" but I didn't find anything that looked like it would fix my problem. :(

Could somebody help me out please?

PS....favourite feature of this board is the "My Assistant" ! It rocks! :2cents:
