OS X on the MSI Wind, Before it's Released

Numberzz

A hacker, and a member of our forums, has managed to get Mac OS X Leopard running on the MSI Wind. This is what jav had to say about getting it on his MSI Wind. It's translated from spanish.

Well, here it is. The new MSI Wind running Kalyway 10.5.2. I still have to make some adjustments, such as the resolution and the wireless card, but I couldn't stop myself from posting these images that I'm sure will get the interest from more than one person. Ethernet and Bluetooth work right out of the box, so I'm really expecting a lot from this small notebook.

All that and the MSI Wind isn't even going to be released until July 7th.

EDIT: It appears that the sound also works OTB. The resolution and wireless are the only things that we know of that don't work.

Are the units being sold in the US going to be branded as MSI or whatever it is in the UK (Avant?).

Advent

I personally prefer this white Macbook lookalike version

than the Advent dull grey version

the advent is actually a similar silver to that of the macbook air and any ither mac machine.not a dull grey but i guess it doesnt show in pics.

ill try for some images when i get home from work.

ordered a dell card and i think then the machine should be %100.sound, graphics, sleep, bluetooth, wifi.....what more could we want ?

A bigger machine LOL. I can't use it, its too small. It would be great for travelling though. Too bad I don't travel.

*Throws MSI Wind onto pile of EeePCs running 10.4.9*

I agree, I haven't used one but seems too underpowered.

Underpowered...Speaking of the MacBook Air! LOL. I went from that to MacBook Pro.

Much better about the same price point too.

Better flog my MSI Wind before eBay gets flooded with them LOL!

If anyone needs any help on what we have been able to do so far feel free to either PM me or contact me through the Wiki at http://wind-osx86.wikispaces.com/

Peace Out!

I already put together an atom based system - it is very useable.. I was able to go online, listen to itunes, run office and apps while adium etc hung in the background.. you have to give cred for what this is, a 10" wonder that can run osx, i'm already committed to buying one, NCIX here in canada is taking pre-orders for it. I got my dell 1390 mini-pci wireless card off ebay tonight for 10 bux cant wait for the wind to arrive, it'll be sweet - and it'll tear me away from this desktop.

(even though i just added in an 8800gts and a tb hd to my main hackintosh desktop..)

i saw the youtubes, leopard looks good, but is it smooth enough for everyday use (MSoffice, internet..)or can you see a clear difference in speed/responsiveness to the macbooks? is tiger maybe better?

hi there! I can tell you WHAT ELSE COULD WE WANT:

-tiger should be really fast on this little beast - c'mon, we don't need time machine on an ultra portable

-since it's usually pretty hard for newbies to do the codec dump for audio, then the vudu for the graphic card, etc., it would be amazing to have a har drive image of a clean install floating around. would make life much easier!

any newsabout the video and sound support? did the dell card work alright?

Not working with Framebuffer 5.1.6, both screens only get garbage as soon as one connects the VGA.Maybe another Framebuffer version must be used for dual screen to work?

Definitely good for Internet browsing (it's called a "netbook" after all), but Flash videos (YouTube) bring the processor near its capacity. QuickTime videos (e.g., Front Row), on the other hand, run just fine.

Just a heads up as i'm doing 'Leopard on Wind' too (an advent in fact). Here's what's working on mine... note that although the underclock light does change colour, XBench reports virtually identical speeds.

WORKING!

- OSX 10.5.4 with vanilla kernel

- Multithreading

- Accelerated graphics with Core Image and Quartz Extreme at 1024x600 native res

- USB

- Webcam

- SD slot (tested wuth 16GB SDHC)

- Bluetooth

- Sleep (hotkeys and on lid close) - suspends to RAM, fans off, flashing LED

- Processor name display in 'about this mac'

- Speakers

- Battery indicator

- Brightness keys (no OSD)

- Volume keys (with OSD)

- Ethernet

NOT WORKING YET!

- WiFi (current solution is mini pci express card swap) - both 8187 and 8185 kexts tested. Ideas?

- Hibernate / Safe Sleep (tried SmartSleep util, no dice)

- Headphone / mic ports

- Underclocking, despite light changing colour: XBench (Blue - normal): 22.06 vs XBench (Green - underclocked): 22.02

- VGA output

UNTESTED BY ME (feedback?)

- 2 finger scroll (kext required)

- Speedstep - how to check is working?

If we can get the stock Realtek WiFi working (although i've ordered a broadcom based card off eBay) then we'll be in great shape!

i'm more worried about the sound, since you can't replace it

@happycar, can you maybe test how youtube works on wind?

I don't really use headphones, so having the internal speakers working is good enough for me.

Plus, I have a USB to headphone / mic adaptor with my Sennheiser headset I use for podcasting, and that DOES work.

Did I read that correctly?

An XBench score of 22? I was pretty excited until I read that.....

Now I'm getting a little turned off to the idea if that's the case......

I hear that. My 1.83GHz Core Duo Mac Mini scores about 95. An XBench of 22 does seem pretty low. But hey, it handily beats out a G4 Mac Mini! ;)

We definitely need some first-hand accounts of performance though. What's it really feel like? Is it usable for Office 08, web browsing, simple iPhoto uses, etc? I'm really curious to know. That XBench score does seem pretty low.

what will it take to get the stock wifi card working? will we have to modify an existing realtek driver? create a driver from scratch? how difficult is this? once more people out there have Winds, is it pretty likely that someone will figure it out? enlighten me.
