Apple announces the iPhone 3G S

Ed

iphone3gs_2up.jpgAs expected, Apple's Phil Schiller announced the new iPhone 3G S at the WWDC keynote.

Here's a quick summary of the key new features of the iPhone 3G S:

  • 2x faster than the previous iPhone.

  • Supports up to 7.2 Mbps HSDPA.

  • 3 megapixel camera, up from 2 megapixels.

  • Video recording.

  • Hands free voice control.

  • 32GB capacity, with 16GB and 8GB versions still available.

  • Improved battery life.

So, are you going to upgrade? Is the updated feature set enough to get you dialling your mobile network provider for an upgrade?

I would if it weren't for 2 year contracts. When I bought mine 2 weeks after it came out last year, I had to add a line to get it since my contract wasn't up. Apple could support video, and voice controls, and more on the iPhone 3g, but they don't. So now I think its time for a Palm Pre. After trying it twice, I think it's time to switch. Too bad it doesn't have the Apple App store...

It depends if AT&T decides to be a little less greedy.

If they make it so those who bought the iPhone 3G (like me) around last year's release date (July 11th I believe) are eligible for the $299 subsidized (32GB) pricing one year from the original contract date, then I might go for it. Otherwise, I don't know if I could justify paying $499 for those new features... If it came down to that and I still wanted to upgrade, I'd find a way to sell my iPhone 3G 16GB for around $200 to make up for the extra "early upgrade" fee. Cmon AT&T/Apple, don't hate on the 3G owners out there!

I doubt you'll be able to sell a year old 16Gb 3G for $200, when AT&T is offering them new for $150, and used/refurbed for $120. {censored}, you can get a new 8GB 3G for $99 now.

Yeah, I'll be upgrading. I skipped the 3G and kept my 2G because a slightly faster network wasn't good enough reason for me to spend $300. The 3GS offers a big bump in speed over the 2G, so I'll be upgrading, and I can also do it for cheap, since my AT&T contract is eligible for an upgrade. :P

That's what I'm saying lol... I don't think I'd be able to, so I will most likely wait, unfortuantely...

d00m42, I will buy a year old 16Gb 3G for more-less $200. Contact via email for details. Besides, there are too many people here who will do the same trick. Because I've got no AT&T in this country, therefore no iPhone at all.

I'm certainly leaning towards getting it. The feature set for the new models aren't the greatest thing to come out of phones, but they're pretty nifty. All it needs is one little feature to sell me on it entirely, which is better Bluetooth support.

I know that it already supports A2DP, so my Bluetooth headphones will work fine on it. If it supports other profiles, I'll consider it.

If it supports Bluetooth keyboards, I'm dropping Verizon immediately.

Not upgrading. Even though I'm eligible for the upgrade pricing, the OG iphone is fine for me since it's edge-only where I live (and I like the $20 data plan), and my girlfriend's 3G is still going strong without the need for an upgrade. We'll probably both upgrade next summer once the iphone 3GT is out and I can load 64GB of music and movies on the device :D

I have my iPhone 3G since 2 month, and i'm really happy with it. Surfing a lot (99% of usage), and playing a little bit of Monkey Island 1 and 2. So speed issues aren't so interesting, more interesting is this anti-oil touch screen!

While the new iPhone 3G S is a nifty device, I don't see myself getting one until next year. Who knows by that time maybe just maybe Apple will have a new version of the iPhone.

I don't quite care for AT&T anymore. No MMS or Tethering support, not even a conclusive statement from them. All the fees that come with upgrading a device is stupid and pointless. The charge you for getting a new device? Pathetic. Apple should have thought this deal through.

If you want exclusive rights to sell a device than by all means go for it, don't sign the deal if you're not going support basic functions like MMS and Tethering. Another thing don't make your consumers bewildered by how much you want to squeeze out of their pockets by charging for those simple services. You already have the iPhone users by the balls as it is, with their 30 dollar data plan that AT&T told us we "had" to get in order to even by the device. Just because it's cheap up front doesn't mean you can charge the loyal customers what you want (in all actuallity that can and do).

I was on the phone with a rep from them and they told me "I knew" that the iPhone 3G didn't support MMS. While that's only half true, only do to the fact that the iPhoneOS didn't support it at first, nevertheless AT&T was trying to pull a fast one on me.

Even Apple dropped the ball on the iPhone 3G. It took 2 years to get the kind of features most smartphones have. Cut and Paste, Video recording, Voice Dialing, Tethering. All these except tethering were on my old Motorola V3i. Well I forgot Cut and Paste wasn't on it but Video and Voice Dial was. Even Windows Mobile had all those features. A company like Apple who wanted to get in the game sure left out some key features at the start. I just don't see the need to go all giddy with these "new" features, features that should have been on the first generation iPhone. I pointed this out on the offical Apple forums and true to their nature I was promted by the Administrive not to post such view on those forums as it wasn't helping or a question. In fact it was a question. They didn't see it like that. I guess when you do "Think Different" Apple doesn't want to hear it.

I'm thinking of just unlocking my phone and going to T-Mobile.

Why shouldn't AT& T charge you for a new device? You bought a phone at a reduced cost and signed a contract for 2 years and now a new phone comes out and you expect to get rid of the phone you haven't finished paying for and get a new one? Why should AT&T lose money cause you want the new phone at a reduced price. All this wining is BS I mean people sign phone contracts all the time and new phones come out every year and you don't see other people wining I can't get the new (insert phone hear). I love how everybody thinks they are entiled to everything they want. Hey I signed a two year contract but I want the new phone now cause its shiny.

Why should I be charged for a handset that I just wanna replace? A handset that I'll be using for two years. It just seems ridiculous that all I'd be doing when if I did get the new iPhone is just using a different phone yet they charge you to do so. Do you think it's fair?

You're half right on this one. Upfront last year I got a reduced price because at that time I was eligible for the upgrade when the iPhone 3G came out. However AT&T recovers the initial loss of money over the two years that's how they can subsidize the phone to the end consumer for so little. Take a hit in the beginning and recover and earn a profit in the end. So no I don't expect anything from AT&T and I don't think I deserve a free one just because the latest and greatest comes out but I do expect at least for the time I've been with AT&T that they could work with me and not charge for every god damn little thing.

I sorta covered this in my last statement. I'm not whining about the release of the iPhone. As I've stated I don't think I'm entitled to a new one for a reduced price nor do I want one. My major gripe with Apple is why release a device that it's US "exclusive" provider can't even offer all the functionality the new iPhoneOS can offer? THAT'S why I think AT&T should cut some slack for at least the iPhone user because those are the people that are being left out. Even the new users of the new iPhone should get a little something extra because even they can't use those features that are missing.
