10.5.3 Available as an update!

Numberzz

10.5.3 is finally available as a downloadable update. The update itself weighs in at a hefty 420MB. As with most Apple updates, it wasn't very descriptive, stating only:

The 10.5.3 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.

As with all updates, DON'T INSTALL, unless you have a vanilla kernel, or until some more testing has been done. There aren't many visual changes with this update, but now you have the opinion to backup or not when you are on a laptop with Time Machine.

Here are all the General fixes, all the others can be found in the read link at the bottom of the article.

-Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras

-Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices

-Improves 802.1X (Wifi) behavior and reliability and when using Time Machine

-Includes fixes for Time Machine compatibility with Time Capsule

-Fixes a font issue that could result in Helvetica Narrow being used in applications instead of Helvetica.

-Resolves stability issues with Word of the Day, iTunes Artwork, and Slideshow screen savers.

-Fixes an issue in which certain attached hard drives may not show up in the Finder.

-Addresses an issue with .Mac syncing of Dashboard widgets over multiple Macs that use different screen resolutions.

-Includes additional RAW image support for several cameras.

-Improves the accuracy of the Software Update progress bar indicator.

-Addresses an issue in which Finder may not be available if the computer name is blank in Sharing preferences.

Yeah, we now, and 10.5.4 will use kernel 9.4.0, but if an important software updae came before 10.4.0 kernel could be 9.3.2, rarely the do more than 1 intermediate kernel update.

I encountered the same behaviour with Titanium 9 but not related to the installation of an update. I just installed Toast, it worked once and after that never again with immediate crashing on startup.

Seems to be non related to OSX updates.

My upgrade also went very smooth ... but now I am noticing, that my Toast Titanium installation is broken.. when I run TT 9, the app starts in the dock, and then closes immediately after, dont get to se the app window at all.

Is there a way to se what is happening?

There are also some weird things happening with iWork.. but everything else seems to work just fine.

so if you have alot of things patched and workarounds and such. This will set everything to default? Which would be a big headache for me... im gonna have to pass on this update. It took alot of work getting wifi to work, and usb and wired network...

its not that you will have to do everything from the scratch. just backup all your extensions. do the update. restore them(only those patched, custom ones- not all the extensions you have)with kexthelper. repair permissions and restart. thats all:)

Can anybody help me I'm newbie...

All the while I've used Kalyway 10.5.2 work well, until I did the update 420MB 10.5.3, I can't get to my login screen, it always stuck at the grey screen, "Please reboot...".

Any idea how to solve it?

How to trun LCC.dmg file that's on my pen drive? What's the steps?

Thanks!

So just a confirmation, replacing the AHCIFamily fixes the AHCI problem?

It seem the apple ACHIPort version has changed, but the only change in IOACHIFamily is the IOAHCIBlockStorage kext.

I don't think i was using patched AHCI kexts with 10.5.2, it was an upgrade from iATKOS1.0i via netkas method.

rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
rm -R /System/InstallAtStartup
reboot now

Thank you, finetuned!

I finally get 10.5.3 installed after several failures. It always crash in the middle of installation even when I did exactly the same as netkas.org says. Thank for the tips above. I was be able to recover my system and try it again and again. Here are some differences between my attempts.

Crash:

  1. sudo -s
  2. [my password]
  3. while sleep 1 ; do rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext ; done

Success:

  1. sudo su
  2. [my password]
  3. while sleep 1; do rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext; done

I don't know the difference between sudo -s and sudo su. And in point 3 while sleep 1; and kext; doesn't have space before the sign ";" and turn out working without interupted by crash during the installation. I'm not sure these points are really matter and make differences. Or they are basically the same, and it work for me is just my luck. So I just like to point it out and see if anyone knows is it or it's not the factor that makes difference.

Upgrade succeeded from Kalway 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 using Nektas' guide. Except for one (1) problem: Keyboard no longer works… what could be the reason?

Keyboard works before MacOSX gui.. when it says “press any key” during booting… I am able to enter -v or any command… but when MacOSX gui loads my keyboard no longer works… any solution please? THANKS!

hey, u probably chosen wrong kelner, if u have hackintosh with vanilla u have to choose vanilla kernel and if u have anything else(modbin, speedstep, kabyl, sleep kernel)u have to choose the modbin 9.3. if u stuck on grey screen u can try typing

update -v

in darwin bootloader(that part with counting time from 5 to 0) just hit enter, type the command and hit enter again. it should update the files, reboot and startup...maybe:/i assume you haven't done any backup of your kernel and extensions?

by lcc.dmg you mean logitech control center?

I have on a Laptop the same problem.

Update works find. During the reboot at the darwinloader I key in update -v.

After that you can only start with the update -v option.

We need to wait untill one has a correct workaround for the Nvidia 7xxx series (graphic card).

I'm using XFX GF8600 GT, it worked b4.

Yeah nothing happen when I type update -v!

I really need to get to the desktop so that I can get back some data there!

The 10.5.3 update never showed up in the software updates, So I downloaded Kalyways Combo update. Installed with no problems at all. :D Using Kalyways 10.5.2 install with Vanilla kernel Followed by Kalyways 10.5.3 Combo update and kernel update. Works great.

GeForce 7800 GT OC here.  Works dandy.  RTFT and you'll see how.

i know theres a way to delete the caches in terminal but u have to google for it, i just dont excacly which files you have to delete

The kext caches?

/System/Library/Extensions.mkext

often there is also

/System/Library/Extensions.mkext.*

So I just like to point it out and see if anyone knows is it or it's not ....... making any difference.

I was curious, too.  Now moreso intheknow.

Did the update using Netkas method, everything ok, just have to restore AppleHDA.kext for sound & AppleACPIPlatform.kext (to get my PS/2 keyboard working again).

Updated without any issues. After update I had to replace:

- IONetworkingFamily (from 10.4.9)

and reinstall audio (AppleHDAPatcher_v1.16)

Everything else is working with vanilla kexts (including sleep !!), however - in system profiler are incorrect information displayed (4 GHz Intell Core 2 Duo instead of 2,4 GHz Intell Core 2 Duo).

Anyone else having similar issues with sys. profiler info after update ?

This is related to AppleSMBIOS.kext.  If your 10.5.2 install reported this information correctly, restore this kext from your backup.  Otherwise, you can download a patched version.

Could someone clarify one thing for me?

I have the machine on my sig and installed kalyway 10.5.2 in two partitions (two installs), one to keep stable and the other for testing.

I sucessfully migrated the test install for the 10.5.3 manually and I ran an XBench in both installs to know what\s performing better.

Now, take a look at those screens:

Kalyway 10.5.2

Kalyway 10.5.2 migrated to 10.5.3

Take a look on the Thread Test. It jumped from 352.48 to 614.34 :P

WTF?!?

hey it similiar in my case, i wouldnt bother it you got more points, but overall score i smaller than in 10.5.2 as i see in your screens. thats strange since my is better even if i have running applications such as, adiumx, safari, mail, azureus, stickies and all vmware network stuff(virtual dhcp and so on)-not the VM itself. as i said, even with all those apps running, the overall score is better then 10.5.2 running xbench only...

my rig in my my sig:)

I've successfully updated using Kalyway 10.5.2 -> 10.5.3

About this Mac -> More Info Shows No Processors 0, Total No Cores: 1

Fyi I'm using Intel Core2Duo Processor E6400 2.13 Ghz

How do I make use of the 2 Cores working on Leo?

Any howtos?

Thanks!

check if you dont have cpus=1 specified in your com.apple.boot.plist or some other kernel flags (i would suggest delete all the kernel flags, repair permissions and restart).

yep, you're right... I've restored previous AppleSMBIOS.kext from 10.5.2 and I've got correct information in system profiler but sleep/wake stopped to work (it was fully working in 10.5.2). I've tried also various AppleSMBIOS.kexts from netkas, macnub - no success (sleep won't work). So far I'm running on vanilla AppleSMBIOS.kext from 10.5.3 wit fully working sleep - only issue is incorrect cpu info in sys. profiler. :thumbsdown_anim:

This is related to AppleSMBIOS.kext.  If your 10.5.2 install reported this information correctly, restore this kext from your backup.  Otherwise, you can download a patched version.

Similar here as well... see info in my specs. Overall xbench score went down after updating to 10.5.3 in my case
