10.4.5 Is On Its Way

AppleInsider is reporting that developers should be expecting 10.4.5 this week.

Apple Computer this week is expected to begin widespread testing of Mac OS X 10.4.5 Update, the next in a series of maintenance updates to its Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" operating system and the first update to address bugs lingering the company's initial release of Mac OS X 10.4.4 for Intel-based Macs, AppleInsider has learned.

 

Contacts often familiar with Cupertino, Calif.-based company's operating system plans say the Mac maker this week began distributing the first external builds of Mac OS X 10.4.5 Update, which weigh in at approximately 15MB.

 

Two of the most recent builds are rumored to have appeared as "Mac OS X 10.4.5 build 8H3" and "Mac OS X 10.4.5 build 8H5."

 

While the specific fixes and enhancements planned for the update are unknown, Apple is reportedly asking that its developers and partners put weight on Safari, Core Graphics intensive applications, Quartz Composer, and the Mac OS X Dock.

 

The company also reportedly asked that developers test networking, the Mac OS X crash report, File Sync, Software Update and the MSDOS File System.

One astute OSx86 Project forum member noticed that Apple is already requiring 10.4.5 for some applications, such as J2SE 5.0.

 

This also marks the first OS X update that Intel users should (presumably) be able to use via Apple’s update system. In the developer builds, updates were not available through Software Update.

I already had ProductVersion "10.4.4" and ProductBuildversion "8G1165" in my SystemVersion.plist (to mess with some other applications) and I didn't get the message that 10.4.5 was needed during install of j2se50release4dp5_i386

 

So it installed just fine on a "fooled 10.4.4" OsX86 10.4.3 Build 8f1111g :)

My guess is that they don't anticipate releasing it until 10.4.5 is out, so they worded it with that as the requirement, but for testing puroposes, the installation check is actually happy with 10.4.4.

The big strength of Apple's marketing...instead of interpreting the frequent updates as an indicator for releasing beta versions as finals, it is interpreted as continuous and fast development of the software...on the other side every windows update is evaluated like the bug that it fixes. :P

Good point, jodo. Here's something that's really interesting.

 

Isn't it surprising that an OS company can make such a big deal about .x releases? I mean, with most software, the jump between 10.3 and 10.4 releases are seen as inconsequential at best. Apple was smart to keep with the naming scheme (Tiger, Panther, etc) to make what would normally be a small thing seem like a huge event (and one which people will pay for, natch). In fact, from the Apple people I've talked with, that's the reason they kept the Cat names from when it was just a code name.

 

Update: 10.4.5 has been seeded to developers… but only the PPC version! No Intel version accompanied it and it’s not clear when an Intel version will come along.

Mashugly, you do realize that there is only a .x difference between Windows 2000 (NT version 5.0) and Windows XP (NT version 5.1), right? Same with Windows Server 2003 (NT version 5.2). Vista (NT version 6.0) will be the first full version number update to Windows since 1999.

If Apple releases 10.4.5 for PPC before 10.4.5 for Intel, I'd personally be a very surprised. I really expected them to keep the updates pretty much synchronized. It's going to be confusing when people go to the Apple website and see "10.4.5 update" only to run the installer and see the message " your system does not meet requirements."

 

If that's the case, scratch my idea of uni-bin updates. Eh...

But maybe not the case... quite yet :graduated:

Keep in mind 10.4.5 has only been released to PPC developers so far. I am sure they will keep parity as for the actual release date, but from all the articles I have read so far, there is no developer release of 10.4.5 for Intel as of yet.

Mac OS X build 8G1445 (10.4.5 Intel) is going to appear in new seeds to developers this week, if it hasn't already.

 

"The Intel-native version focuses on the same system components as the PowerPC version, with the addition of Spotlight, Mail, QuickTime, Dashboard and Keychain, tipsters have said. An emphasis is also being placed on the Rosetta emulation environment and application performance."

Hmmm, I really liked the part about working on Rosetta. It will be nice to get a fast version on my box.

There have been three builds of 10.4.5 for Intel, 8G1440, 8G1445 and 8G1450 (8G1450 has since been cancelled and recalled due to a bug). These builds are not available to developers yet, only seed testers.

autoy: thats an interesting question... technically DTK systems should be supported until the end of the year (the original agreement stated end of 2006 for returns), but i'm guessing most devs would have jumped at the chance to get their freebie iMac Core Duo.

 

i suspect they wont release any more builds for the DTK machines.
