well i use the f-e version too. and it works fine!

 

did you try too boot the system with the -v option to start it in verbose?

Than you are maybe able to see where the system hangs.

 

I hope I can get this one working!

 

It is hanging at:

 

"ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::registerLPCDriver - failed to locate SMC driver"

DAMN! I'm a silly idiot!

 

i tried the patched kernel for 10.6.4 and did not install the comboupdate.... :(

 

ok the status:

 

OSX86 is running good with FSB at 640 at 1.92GHZ

But Plex is still unable to play 1080p movies fluid

 

is it possible that i don't use the correct settings for graphics?

 

i tried it with and without the graphicpatch of the apple updater.

 

is there some way to check if the graphiccard is working properly?

ok... i made a test with xbench...

the website chose automatically a powermac G5 to compare my system.

 

here are the results:

i seems that my system is al lot slower. That might be correct because of the atom cpu but i think it is realy very slow.

 

can anybody tell me about his results with xbench? and if he is able to play 1080p movies fluid?

ATOM 330 CAN'T play FULLHD, only 720

 

IF you want to watch a fullhd video, you have to use GPU, and, VLC doesen't have the right code to rendering work on GPU.. But, quicktime can! And it's really really cool, it needs a little cpu to render code on GPU

 

try a 1080 with quicktime

 

if you don't have codec, you have to install Perian (find on google)

 

for 1080p, you have to installa flash player 10.1, Snow leopard doesen't have the right flash player, it has an old version, witch doesen't have GPU rendering

 

flash player 10.1 or above.. there's beta 10.2 @64bit, i'm using it, bugged but, rockS!

very good realisation there! By any chance do you have an image of your initial installation you can share with us?

Tried many time to tune the setup and make everything as described but stalled.

If I can browse your img probably can spot what's wrong with mine.

Hi everyone!

 

It seems that the gpu does not work properly. Regardless which player i use (Plex, XBMC, Quicktime, Vlc) in 1080p one cpu core is working with 100% and the video does not run fluid.

I will have a look at this the next days.

 

Can anybody of you tell me his or her results with xbench with this system?

I would like to compare especially the graphic results.

 

to axelmac. I can upload you the extrafolder and the kernel... but that would be the same files polvorito already uploaded...

where are you from? pherhaps we can fiddle this out in a little skype session. pm me.

I got lower results on xbench, I'm not overclocking I'm still at 1.6GHz

my systems was also compared to a G5

I don't have any movie on 1080p, so I tried a video on youtube and the performance is not good indeed

up to know the maximum resolution of the movies i watched is HD 720.

But I remember there was a setting messing up in plex "software upscaling" I disable that and it went better

 

But I think it would be interesting to see how this system performs in windows or linux, if it is lot better it would mean we got something wrong in the hack, I it is the same well so be it, there is not much we can do.

I have a friend with the same hardware who is running windows xp with mediaportal. He has good experiences with 1080p movies. seems to be no problem. I think we have still problems with the gpudecoding. but i am not shure how to fix it.

at the moment i use the graphicsenabler of chameleon. i`m thinking about playing with some other enablers

I've tried to install Chameleon several times, but it's not showing up in the system preferences or anywhere else on my system, even after rebooting. Do I have an incorrect setting? Is there a workaround?

but IMHO this will not answer the question whether H.264 content can be played back: the atom 330 for sure cannot at high bitrate w/o GPU aid. and I doubt that xbench uses GPU acceleration...

 

with ubuntu and xbmc with VDPAU this machine can play back nearly all H.264 content, some stutter occur for 1080p for very high bitrates at the keyframes.

 

Plex can play back 720p mkv with 10MBit at 77% CPU. It does not want to start a 1080p .ts (recorded from HDTV) , also no 1080p mkv. same with XBMC Dharma.

 

Grmmmbl, I wanted to switch to OsX. Looks bad for the moment...

 

EDIT: correction, I found also some mkvs with 1080p24 playing well!!! I think it is very important that the CPU is idle. It did that with XBMC Dharma. Hint: press 'o' during playback, this will give you info whether HW accelaration is used, and CPU usage/bitrate etc.

when you install it you have to click install type there you can change some settings and add prefpane it will appear on system preferences

Okay...

tried another method...

 

I tried to play a 1080p video in youtube in html5 with safari. (you have to join the beta under www.youtube.com/html5)

than search for 1080p and under options click on webm. Than you can chose any video out of the results. The player should open with a little notice "html5"

 

i played the same videos on the zotac and on my macbook with completely different results.

 

on the macbook the cpu runs with aprox. 10 to 15% und everything works fine. on the zotac all 4 cores are running about 50% and the video plays with 3 or 4 frames per second sometimes less.

 

for me it seems like the gpu tries to decode the movie but is not able to do it right.

 

so far so bad.

I'm able to get my F-E system to boot, but it hangs on the gray apple screen with the progress circle endlessly going around. What's the next step in figuring out the problem? Are there any likely issues?

 

Steps I took:

 

1. Installed OSX externally using another Mac

2. Installed 10.6.4 update

3. Ran Chameleon using the same steps as Polvorito

4. Copied kexts & files per Polvorito's instructions

5. Copied boot file from Eugene's original instructions

6. Used OSXTools to put patched mach_kernel in root directory

7. Put drive in Zotac system build

 

I'm very new at this and trying to figure it all out. Thanks for everyone's help.

first: you should always boot with the -v option in chameleon as long as the system does not boot. than you can see the error messages.

 

in my actual installation i did not use the bootfile from eugene. i kept the original one by chameleon.

by the way... which version of chameleon did you use?

 

are you sure you have set the bios correct?

did you repair permissions for the kexts?

I used the RC5 r619 of Chameleon. I will review the BIOS, but everything is set according to Polvorito's screen caps. I booted externally to the drive & used OSXTools to repair permissions. Is there a specific function for repairing permissions only for kexts?

 

Looks like some SMC some issues. I know the tutorial said I might need to modify the FakeSMC file, but I'm not sure what would need to be done or how to do it. I have the F-E board.

hm... you can fix the usb errors by switching the usb speed in the bios from hispeed to fullspeed.

 

there is al litte porgramm calld kextutillity that repairs only the kext folders.

 

I have the same board like you und installed the system 2 times. the first with one 2gb module the second one with two 2gb modules. so i dont think you have to change someting there.

 

do you still boot with an external drive?

I only boot with an external from my MacBook Pro when I need to make changes. Otherwise I'm getting these errors when hooked up to the ION system via SATA. I'll look at kextutility and see if I can figure it out. If it matters, I have two 1gb modules.

It booted! I'm cloning the drive to another in case something goes wrong. That way I have a starting point.

 

Going to try out Plex and see how it works. Is there a way to reenable USB high speed now? What steps should I take next? Any updates to avoid? Thanks for everyone's help.

as far i dont have bad experiences with updates...

there is somwhere a fix for the usb problem. but i did not try it yet... for me it is more important to get 1080p movies running... usb is the step after that :)

Ok, thanks. XBMC Live was running flawlessly for 1080p movies so it will be interesting to see how this compares. Since all my other machines are Macs I'd love to stick with Plex.

I'm using a zotac ionitx - B mini ITX - GeForce 9400 - 1.6 GHz and trying to install via usb on the HD connected to my macbook. MB do not boot...

Probably should try with the old boot123 and the original SL directly via cd reader.

 

When I've installed osx on my old advent netbook I used to make an image of the installation disk for future use including moving to HD with partition different size (thanks CCCloner :rolleyes: ); just

wondering if polvorito /you can torrent your. Do you think it will work or it is too much hardware dependent now?

Since many of you are using Plex, can you suggest an IR receiver that would work with a Logitech Harmony remote & Plex on this build? I currently have this one that I was using with XBMC. It may work with Plex but I haven't had a chance to tinker yet.

ok.. i gave XBMC Live a try today...

well seems to play 1080p nearly perfect. some realy rare short distortions. perhaps just a little configuration thing.

as long as nobody finds a soulution for gpudecoding i think i will stick to XBMC.

 

Perhaps in the future with plex :wacko:
