The newest update, 10.6.8, killed my networking and made my system hang constantly.

Make sure you backup before attempting the update if you have this build.

I tried it myself, but lost my onboard sound (my USB headset still worked). I've since reverted via my TimeMachine backup (although I had to replace the boot0 and boot1h files for the system to boot afterwards). I didn't experience any hanging, but then I didn't use it for very long before reverting.

Does anyone know how to fix the sound problem?

I recall reading a mention of it being a known issue for Lion, but since I haven't been paying attention to attempts at running pre-release versions of Lion, I'm not sure where to look for a solution.

I think before I try updating again I'll prepare a test partition.

Thanks for the warning. I'll backup and give it a try. I have a Cartri Bios machine. What is your config? Hope this isn't the end of the line.

Mine is the same as the lifehacker config. I just stuck with the original bios as I didn't want to mess with a good thing. Might have to rethink that now.

I updated an external usb hdd to 10.6.8 and I'm afraid you're right. It hasn't hung yet by my network and sound are gone. System preferences says no output devices found. System profiler reports intel high def audio. I plugged in my iBaso usb dac and that works.

I'll boot back to 10.6.7 and make sure that I can see other computer's and devices on my network and report back.

I'm back in 10.6.7 and playing iTunes. I'm also looking at my dLink NAS. I think we could be at the end of the line here for this particular hack.

Let's wait and see what everybody else has to say.

I rebooted back to 10.6.8 and my network appears to work. I can see my NAS drive so the only problem that I have at the moment is no sound off the motherboard.

No way for me to test any longer. I'm now on my wife's iMac 2006 running Lion Preview 4:

running FANTASTIC after the memory upgrade.

The Lifehacker Build was a pride and joy for a long time, ultimately Cartri bios. I wish I did the update before selling the mobo and CPU.

I'm going to build a new system 2600k CPU on 1155 socket for the new Lion. I have the CPU on my desk, and I already ordered Komputerbay 16GB (4 X 4GB) DDR3 DIMM (240 pin) 1333Mhz PC3 10600 / PC3 10666 (8-8-8-24) 16 GB KIT with Gigabyte GA-H67MA-USB3-B3 DDR3 1333 LGA 1155 Intel H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

I hope I've made the right choice.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the support to all the people in this thread as i will unsubscribe tomorrow.

Cheers!

Just updated my Lifehacker hackintosh via software update. Everything but sound worked (including networking). Loaded AppleHDA.kext from 10.6.7 to re-enable sound on 10.6.8.

Have been playing with the update with no hangs so far.

So all you had to do was to copy and replace the "AppleHDA.kext" from 10.6.7 system/library/extensions to the 10.6.8 and that fixed the sound?

Did you get this sorted? I have the orig. BIOS as well and experienced no problems in networking. I can't speak as to the Carti BIOS issues, but for the OG BIOS folx, some things to consider:

1. Are you using the Combo updater via download from the Apple website or updating via Software Update? I've always found the Combo Updater to be the safer option. Maybe try that instead.

2. Are you using the onboard NIC or via the card LH suggested. I'm using the card and never had any networking problems. FWIW I recall earlier in the thread that there were issues with the onboard NIC which is why LH suggests the PCI card, although I know ppl had reported their onboard worked just fine with Stella's v.3 installer. Perhaps search backwards in the thread for how that was resolved before

Also, perhaps a simple PCI Card purchase will solve your networking issues. Alternately you could add a USB Wireless Adapter. I use the Belkin model recommended in the 10.6 HCL and it works perfectly in Mac OS X and Win 7.

About the upcoming changes with Lion...

My system is still running flawlessly in 10.6.8 and is in fact, without a doubt, the most stable "Mac" I have ever owned from the mid 1980's to present. :D Prolly why I am so reticent to say goodbye if we all can't get 10.7 to work on these systems.

I do not want an iMac as I cannot abide not being able to upgrade and tinker (video, internal drives, etc.), I cannot afford a MacPro, and I already own a Mini which I use as an HTPC b/c it is not powerful enough for my everyday use (and again upgrading it was/is limited and a huge pain!). I cannot afford to buy and build a new rig right now.

If I can't find a simple and steady way to get 10.7 to work on my LH rig I may either stick with 10.6 or just get rid of OS X and go back to Win only, as I have in the past when Apple refused to make a Mac I wanted. The LH rig is still a fine piece of computing machinery and runs Win 7 64 bit like a pro.

Your thoughts...what will you do if we cannot get 10.7 to work on this rig?

I finally got 10.6.8 to work, but it was trial and error...

Ultimately, I installed the combo update and ran #####. I'm still unable to get the audio to work though and I can't purchase anything through the app store. I get the GUID error.. tried the usual tricks that people mention but it was to no avail.

I copied and replaced the AppleHDA.kext file from 10.6.7 to the 10.6.8 system/library/extensions folder and it didn't work. System Preferences still says No Output Devices Found.

Did you remember to rebuild your kext database using Kext Utility?

Most of us already have Win7-64 sitting on another drive. HDDs are cheap and the Cartri Chameleon boot loader makes it simple to boot any OS you want.

The Cartri bios works fine with Win7. I've got my 9550 OC'd to 3.6.

10.6.8 makes this about the 8th rev update cycle since October 2009 on the original LH install off the USB drive for me; which I think is pretty remarkable. If 10.7 won't fly, I'll just stay with Snow Leopard. 10.7 might be better for non desktop machines anyway.

I've got Win 7 on my 2nd HDD as well, just wondering if I remove the OS X HDD that has my Chameleon bootloader on it and set the Win 7 partition as Active, shouldn't the system just boot to Windows normally?

So I am seriously considering ditching this project come 10.7. I'm looking for rebuttal here...what is going to make you all keep plugging away with OS X, either on this LH build or another newer build?

I am very interested and look forward to your replies. Thanks!!

HDD's are the cheapest part of a computer. Why toss a working OS. Our LGA 775's are 2 revs back so you would have to start from scratch with a new build. The Q9550 is $300 at New Egg. I think there is still some life left in a SL 10.6.8 win7 dual boot system. Who knows, maybe someone will figure out how to load lion.

FYI, for those of you who have or are considering SSDs, according to this article at MacWorld, 10.6.8 now supports TRIM.

Oops, never-mind, it seems it's only applicable to Apple SSDs, meaning TRIM Enabler will still be needed. Apparently Apple just extended support from a few Macs to all of them, but only for Apple's SSDs.

True, true, HDDs are cheap and in fact I have a spare 650gb and 500gb lying around along with the 1TB NAS I have attached to the LH build PC. The reason I'd consider ditching OS X is b/c I enjoy using the latest/greatest version of an OS, and there is no "killer app" for me that makes me HAVE TO have a Mac, and when it comes to OS X I've lost that loving feeling. ;) They are moving in directions that I don't like or support (iCoud, Mac App Store, my Rosetta apps now obsolete, multi-touch on desktop) and so that is why i am considering ditching this project.

Just my .02

I'm pretty much the same way my Hack is more toy than everyday PC for that I have Q9550 windows machine with a ssd. I like both OS but I'm more familiar with win7 and I have a lot of win apps. It really felt good to see SL boot up for the first time. I couldn't have done it if it were not for this forum.
