AkronElliott
Cartri Bios comes with it's own installer for our specific mobo, (EP45UD3P) including Chameleon RC5. I ran the installer before updating the bios,it adds fakesmc.kext and LegacyHDA.kext to /Extra/Extension/ removing smbios.plist and.apple.Boot.plist (not needed) Cartri is working with Blackosx on a boot cd, which will make LifeHacker v3 installer obsolete. If you had VoodooPowerMini.kext , just delete it and speed step works perfectly dropping cpu temps a few degrees. Startup and shutdown/restart is a little quicker. Please consider supporting cartri if you do use this bios Thank you for your feedback. I am planning on doing this installation when I get the new Hard Drive purchased, aiming for middle of July. I plan on donating to Cartri at that time, I donated to Stella for this installer. When the boot CD is available I will donate to that what was being planned for KakeWalk. Thanks again. jbolted
This is what is soo stoop-id! All the exe does is extract out the BIOS. Its a self contained unzip utility if you will. Basically double clicking it unpacks the files you need. Just put everything onto the flash and select it in the BIOS update. Don't know if the library computer will work for you, they might have some restrictions in place preventing you from downloading, or opening the exe, or both! Well alright, if thats all the exe file does. My nephew works in a sign shop that uses pc's. I'll go up there and unpack it and put it on my thunb drive. Thanks I didnt know it was that simple of a task. So thats the first thing i'll do if FB is still the bios then. I'll qflash it to FE then check out all the cmos settings to make sure they correspond to the original set up steps. once i do that i should be able to boot into either drive, they have the V3 installer on them. but just to be safe, I'll try booting into the 8 GB, setup flash drive first, then run the V3 again on both drives, just in case. And worst comes to worst i can always do a fresh install on one of the drives. Like i said they are cloned anyway, iwill still have all my data on the other. I'll use disk utility first to make sure both drives are good too... Now all i gotta do is wait for them to send me a new or fixed MB. It should be in their possesion by now, & they said its about a 2 week wait. So i'm still looking at 2 and a half weeks. I don't know why gigabyte makes it such a mystery for qflashing the bios. All they tell you is to extract the bios first, they don't tell you how or with what. thanks again for your patience and help. I'll be sure to holler loadly & happily if i get my hackintosh back. I dont know how much more i can take on this old eMAc. Nothing works well on it. It so sooo slow. jbolted Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/187440-lifehacker-guide-with-ga-ep45-ud3p-motherboard/page/73/#findComment-1499339 Share on other sites
HAVEC
http://cartri.net/blog/http://cartri.net/blog/about/donate The PDF Manual on the Cartri.net/blog download tab seems to be broken. But once downloaded to desktop Firefox opened it fine. The boot cd is still being worked on and not on the download page. Cartri has published this so I guess it's not secret anymore but he has a forum setup http://cartri.net/forum/ look for the boot cd in "The Released Versions Forum". I haven't tried this version but older ones worked great with our boards. Give Blackosx (he made the cd) your feedback so he can release it to to everybody on the download page. Flash bios, boot with cd and install SL use MacBIOS package installer on new install and your done:) Installing SL on 35 Gigabyte boards go so very easy with this bios release and only promises to get easier. I've been a alpha tester and donated my time but now feel like its time to send a few bucks as a thank you to Cartri if only to help keep his site up. I noticed in one of your previous posts that you are now, using FE Bios and kakewalk as your installer and that it uses chamelion RC4 bootlaoder, instead of RC2. Does kakewalk provide some sort of custom DSTL for the specific motherboard like the V3 installer did? I like the idea of seeing the seperate kexts in the E/E folder instead of one mkext file. It makes it a lot easier to replace files that become obsolete or that do not work. What was your process for switching from the stell V3 installer to the kakewalk installer? thanks for your help and patience, jbolted Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/187440-lifehacker-guide-with-ga-ep45-ud3p-motherboard/page/73/#findComment-1499859 Share on other sites

It works very similar to stellas installer its a either or situation both give you a easy to install stable OSX experience. mikegabriel
Soo. I think I just screwed up. Been having one of those days, sat down at the computer and iTunes wanted to update to 9.2 so I finally said sure. Without even thinking that I am sitting on the Hackintosh and not my MacBook I let it do all the updates. Came back to it at a black screen. Immediately I knew I screwed up. Reboot it, BIOS loads fine, bootloader comes up and boots and the Stells V3 installer OBEY face comes up. Loads like it's going to boot just fine, then eventually where it would normally load my desktop it just goes black. Now I jumped on my MacBook and hitup Terminal to see if I can SSH into it. I can! But it appears to have dumped my 2nd hard drive (I hope that all the data is there!!). Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on/dev/disk0s2 195181428 80098368 114827060 42% / devfs 179 179 0 100% /dev map -hosts 0 0 0 100% /net map auto_home 0 0 0 100% /home So obviously I am facing a video error. I've got some reading I am going to have to do, just posting here in case anyone doesn't mind lending a hand. I've been out of the Hackintosh game for a bit, was running 10.6.2 previously and left it at that. RESOLVED Unplugged my HDMI & DVI cables. Plugged in a single VGA. Rebooted and it's back up and running with all the right drives and partitions. jbolted
Have you considered Cartri BIOS? Yes I been studying up on that route also. Looks like we all all being going that way in the future. but right now i want to make sure the motherboard i get back from gigabyte..... works with a gigagyte bios in it. If when i get the board back and i try right away the cartri's bios, & something goes wrong, it will just confuse things even further. But I am definitely looking forward to the day, where we can purchase an operating system and install it into compatible hardware without having to jump through hoops. Kakewalk has a installer with custom dsdt.aml like the Lifehacker installer I don't think it uses mkext but puts the kexts in /e/e. I didn't know that the Stell installer would work with the extenions.mkext file expanded and have just seperate kext files in the E/E folder. I was under the impression that it would look for the mkext file and if it didnt find it would not let the bootloader continue. I learn something new every day on this website. thanks again for the help jbolted Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/187440-lifehacker-guide-with-ga-ep45-ud3p-motherboard/page/73/#findComment-1500590 Share on other sites
sirlou
I am currently running 10.6.2 on my Lifehacker setup using Stella v.3, and I have not upgraded my OS yet, as everything is running perfectly. But I decided to bite the bullet and move to 10.6.4... I have a very simple question: Is it better to download the Combo 10.6.4 and upgrade that way OR go 10.6.3 COmbo to 10.6.4 Combo? Any thoughts? sirlou All I did was update from the software update under the apple menu. I've gone through all 3 or 4 upgrades that way without a hitch. I would think that as long as you're at V.3 there shouldn't be a problem with going to 10.6.4 directly. Of course, you could use Carbon Copy Cloner and make a USB bootable HD image with a cheap HDD and a USB docking station and then you've got nothing to worry about. Down loaded and installed no changes or precautions taken. I know some have used the software update without problems but always read that combo was safer. Cartri wrote somewhere that the reason we want to use the combo was that our boards though reported as mac 3.1 to the OS were actually the chip set is a mix of mac 3.1 and mac 4. He said that being a mix like that you could miss something using software update that using the combo witch has everything in it would not. Play it safe and always use the combo. I've never been much concerned with the temps pre .80 was reported in the low 50's. I never could see a definitive answer if the reported temps were real or just misreported by the OS. At any rate with bios .80 and no temp related kext my temps are now in the low 40's as they should be given my overclock and fan set up Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/187440-lifehacker-guide-with-ga-ep45-ud3p-motherboard/page/73/#findComment-1501711 Share on other sites

Could not take ANY chances. I receive Cartri and Nektas updates as they are posted. I used the combo update from apple. Down loaded and installed no changes or precautions taken. That's courage, man. How do you feel when you brake the ice? I know some have used the software update without problems but always read that combo was safer. Georgiles, I did a "softwareupdate" 10.6.4 no problem, from past bootloader, it is pure vanillaNice video btw, your teeth do look whiter in the end Man, I hear you, but I wander How much Vanilla? I'm always scared. What if Apple made an update against Hackintosh. They can get it detected some how if they want too. I guess my fear is derived from the stupefaction that we ARE using PC's loaded with MacOS. I see it but I don't believe it. I don't want to believe it. I think Steve Jobs is closing an eye to the Hackintosh project, for how long nobody does a store or such like thos stupid brothers from Psystar. I guess that's why, when I help a friend or anybody to make a Hackintosh or give advise, I NEVER charge. If I teach somebody Hackintosh, I see it like a code of Honor. I'm the Master Jedi and I teach the apprentice how to get in touch with the force, Hackintosh. Sooner or later, they are gonna become Jedi and further spread the Hackintosh Force. Using a Hackintosh is like using a Lightsaber. Pieulle
Hey 960 Brick, I had a G5 before this hackintosh, and it was ok, but too slow and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles as my hackintosh does. Also, as a film editor, it gives me more power for all types of work that comes my way and I haven't had any sort of bogging down effects or anything. It's just simple awesome! AkronElliott
Thank you for your feedback. I am planning on doing this installation when I get the new Hard Drive purchased, aiming for middle of July. I plan on donating to Cartri at that time, I donated to Stella for this installer. When the boot CD is available I will donate to that what was being planned for KakeWalk. Thanks again. I am deciding to upgrade the BIOS without buying another 1TB hard drive. I will re-use the TimeMachine HD. Last Night, I removed my TimeMachine safety net and used CCC and cloned the main drive to the old "TimeMachine" 1 TB drive. The Cartri Installer was prepared last night. Had the hardest time figuring out the version of GigaByte Motherboard. I was hoping it would appear in the boot. Took the side panel off and used a flashlight to get the last digit. The NIC card was in the bottom slot and it was difficult to decipher. Since it ended in ".6", I can guess that it is 1.6 purchased in November. I will be updating and flashing the BIOS tonight July 1st. My concern is getting a backup of the BIOS that I am about to flash. I will double check the download from Cartri to make sure I got the 1.6 version since there are two versions for this board. I will test the rest of the next two days before upgrading the problematic software. There is a software "filter" I run that was developed for 10.5, I can not get the 10.6 version to install and run. I hope it is something like the DSDT or Kext that were preventing it from functioning. I see in Cartri's manual how to get the backup BIOS. I am concerned when the backup gets overwritten with the multiple boots. I am guessing that I could go to Gigabytes Website and download the BIOS to the Thumb drive and restore? I will donate after a few days. Just want to see stability first. I am following others in this group that has already converted the BIOS. Will there be another group or will Cartri supporters postings continue here? Concerned that I will get lost without other people as a references. With future builds, I will wait on the Cartri Boot CD, but the board and video card limitation will no longer apply as previous. Will there be any reference to "compatable components" like DVD, NIC, Hard Drives, Bluetooth that work with the Board/Graphics card. Is there other references for this? Thank you Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/187440-lifehacker-guide-with-ga-ep45-ud3p-motherboard/page/73/#findComment-1502589 Share on other sites

Thank you Actually the procedure in the cartri pdf is for recovering a failed or corrupt bios. If you decide you want to return to a Gigabyte official bios you can take notice of the version you currently have at boot and download a copy from Gigabyte or while in Qflash make a backup of your bios first and then flash the cartri mac bios. To return to your previous bios just use Qflash to re-flash your saved bios or a fresh copy from Gigabyte. No need to jump through the complicated emergency backup in the PDF. For testing purposes I have flashed from various alpha builds to the Gigabyte fe bios and back and yet to run into any problems at all. Take your time and follow the directions and you'll be fine. As for hardware SATA hard-drive and DVD are recommended and video cards supported by Chameleon namely Nvidia 8000 and above + a few ATI cards. Other cards can be used via EFI strings and older Nvidia cards in 32 bit mode. Onboard nic will work out of the box but without bonjour realtekR1000SL.kext will fix bonjour as will a promiscuous mode hack. There are several cheep $10 nics that are fully supported out of the box as well. Most anything else if its compatible with SL will work just fine. If your doing a fresh install with your SL disk the Cartri boot cd in available in the forum http://cartri.net/forum/ to make it very easy for you. Boot cd follow onscreen directions to install SL. After install boot with cd load the install package that comes with the bios restart from the hard drive and your in your fully functional new Mac Pro. Probably best to use the Cartri Mac Bios thread for support http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=210994 or the Cartri forum. Help is just a click away. By the way I can boot into my carbon copied drive of my original Lifehacker install with the Cartri bios and everything works just as it did before, it is not really a one way street do or die kind of thing. AkronElliott
This Update has been difficult. 1. Could not rename Extra in Finder. Only could rename the non-booted drive. Tried using Terminal but mv gave me permission errors. 2. Formatted the USB - V3 Lifehacker thumb-drive to FAT. Placed the G4-EP45-UD3P2.rar on the FAT USB Thumb drive. This will not boot. 3. Tried to open the G4-EP45-UD3P2.rar on the hard drive but it open VLC. ----- Downloaded the Boot-CD. Burned the ISO onto a CD. Rebooted, Did not run. Opened the ISO and installed on the hard drive. So I continued with the install. Updated HardDrive2, the clone. Then Updated HardDrive1. Rebooted, expected to flash the BIOS. Got into the System, Hard Drives are now orange. Tried rebooting and can not get to the Q-Flash --- Only got the EXTRA folder installed - could not get the BIOS flashed. I got the LIFEHACKER V3 EXTRA and replaced CARTRI's So I am back at V3. Will need to re-read the directions. SO many different options ----- Did not look anything like the YouTube videos. Will need to re-read the directions. SO many different options ----- Did not look anything like the YouTube videos. 1. Do a fresh install of Stell's V3. 2. Get all necessary files in order. (Exta/Extensions, necessary Kexts, etc.) 3. The .rar file needs to be unrared. Download UnrarX and have it Extract to desktop. By default, it extracts to the file's directory which is not what you need. Upon doing that, open the folder on your desktop. The only file you need on the flash drive is the .08 file. This is the BIOS file. You also need to install the MacBIOS Bootloader installer. This installs Chameleon RC5. 4. Run the installer. You don't need this on the flash drive. 5. After you do this, do not try to boot back into Mac OS X until you are done. 6. Upon Motherboard POST, hold the END key on your keyboard, this brings you to the Q-Flash utility. 7. Follow Cartri's guide EXTREMELY carefully from here. What you were doing wrong is trying to put the .rar file on the flash drive without extracting it. Furthermore, this is different from Stell's, you do not actually install Mac OS X from the flash drive. The flash drive merely holds the necessary BIOS files. Good Luck!
