finally - updated vanilla from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6. I've tried 5 times ;)

TM doesnt work. No idea why.

EIDiT: I found in this thread solution:

Here is the FIX:

-Download EFIStudio (http://spotlight.hopto.org/osx86/EFIStudio.zip)

-Run EFIStudio

-change 'device' to ethernet

-Click Add Device

- Click write to com.apple.boot.plist

-reboot.

It works. But...ekh...lost a lot of time for this "update" ..

Sorry I am double posting this, Netkas, but I think it might help some people:

I used to use iATKOS 2.0i’s bootloader installation since it worked in a fail-proof manner with my four-partition MBR setup with one of the partitions having an encapsulated GUID partition. (only Disk Utility and MacDrive understand this) Vista just sees the MBR partitions, and Linux has a bipolar disorder: it can’t understand how the two are going on at once.

Anyway, to upgrade to 10.5.6, I needed EFI V9, so I used Pacifist to examine the iATKOS install CD. (note that iATKOS 4i and Chameleon installers did not work) I discovered that I needed to use startupfiletool. Despite the fact that I have a paper due later this week and risked hosing my production machine, I went ahead anyway. Here’s what I did:

Put the EFIv9 boot file in the root of my Mac drive along with startupfiletool, booted up in single user mode, and installed. I had some issues with AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement causing kernel panics until I installed the disabler. Also, the DSDT only compiled without errors (only 2 warnings) after both the OS upgrade and having the AppleIntel kext present.

After install, my tablet functionality was broken, and also PC Card, but those should be easy to fix. Audio via SFX strings also broke, but that was to be expected. Alternatively, I think I can only enable my microphone without SFX.

I will also note that I now have benign disk errors when I check my disk in Disk Utility, and they can’t be repaired. I that’s because I couldn’t eject the disk or unmount the partition since the boot file and startupfiletool were on the root partition. I recommend booting from an install DVD and storing the files on a flash drive to avoid this problem.

I had a good running 10.5.5 system using EFI strings to get my nVidia GeForce FX5500 video card working with hardware acceleration. After doing a software update to 10.5.6 I could not boot into the GUI environment with either EFI strings or NatIt/Titan nVidia support. The GUI would come up if I let it pick a default VGA mode.

When I boot from a maintenance partition I can see the following errors in the "windowserver.log"

I have tried placing NVDANV30Hal kext and some others from 10.5.5 into the Chameleon /Extra/Extensions folder but so far, no joy. If anyone has seen this problem, or has a good idea how to solve the problem I could sure use some pointers.

I had the exact same thing on my "ancient" Dell Latitude D800 laptop using nvkush.kext. After upgrading to 10.5.6 the booting proces stopped after starting the loginwindowapp. After removing nvkush it booted ok. Went back to 10.5.5 (clean install) so I can't look in the logfiles anymore but if it's of use to you I'm happy to install the update again and post the logfile results here on the board.

This is working for me.

see the signature for all the system that i have tested on..

Retail DVD 10.5.4 with boot cd 132 (generic)

Intel mobo works fine.

GA-P35-DS4 not working yet bios v F14c (beta)

read the rules about sigs before some of the admins delete it :)

I eventually got the system to boot with full resolution changing. Through trial and error I added these additional kext to my /Extra/Extensions.mkext cache:

IOGraphicsFamily.kext
IONDRVSupport.kext
IOPCIFamily.kext
NVDANV30Hal.kext
NVDAResman.kext

However, I still plan to drop back to 10.5.5 because the system obviously does not have hardware acceleration and some features related to graphics still don't work. VmWare Fusion runs but is deadly slow. DVD player won't play a dvd - no usable video device, And, every time I select Graphics in System Profiler I get a Kernel Panic.

Guys, if your Model identifier is showing the model of your mobo, you can change it by following this guide:

http://www.s155158671.websitehome.co.uk/sy...profilermo.html

The only issue that I found is Geekbench 64bit still showing "Hackintosh" :)

Is there a solution for the Kernel Panics when mounting a dmg? my com.apple.plist has mach_kernel as default, which was suggested as a solution earlier, but thats not the problem for me.

I was having the same issue when inserting a usb flash drive or external drive. I replaced IOUSBFamily.kext and IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext from 10.5.5 and all works well. Now just need to get shutdown, sleep and restart working.

Gigabyte EX38-DQ6

Core2Duo E8400

4 gigs of ram

WD 640 gig HD

Sapphire HD3850

In my machine 10.5.6 respond more quickly and faster than 10.5.5 ;)

I also think so. Had no problems with update. 10.5.4 was faster for me then 10.5.5 and 10.5.6 is also better in performance then 10.5.5. Saw also some posts of disk benchmarks which are better.

I've succesfully updated to 10.5.6 on my Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 Rev 1 but... sound is not working. After updating I had to reinstall the kexts, and now it seems like it's working ok, but it doesn't actually produce any output.

Anyone experienced this as well or does someone have other suggestions about how to fix it?

I don't see why not. Look in /Volumes/osx-10.5.6/var/log/*.log It should look something like:

bash-3.2# ls -l /Volumes/Production/var/log/*.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 0 Dec 3 22:50 /Volumes/Production/var/log/alf.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 217857 Dec 20 05:05 /Volumes/Production/var/log/fsck_hfs.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel	42579 Dec 20 05:08 /Volumes/Production/var/log/hdiejectd.log
-rw-r----- 1 root admin 4262 Dec 17 12:24 /Volumes/Production/var/log/install.log
-rw------- 1 root admin	71912 Dec 20 05:08 /Volumes/Production/var/log/secure.log
-rw-r----- 1 root admin 8801341 Dec 20 05:08 /Volumes/Production/var/log/system.log
-rw-r----- 1 root admin	87200 Dec 20 05:08 /Volumes/Production/var/log/windowserver.log
-rw-r----- 1 root admin 255995 Dec 20 01:40 /Volumes/Production/var/log/windowserver_last.log

You can tell from the time stamp which ones were just updated. Then use tail to look at the lase entries like this:

tail -n 100 system.log | less

That will show the last 100 lines of system.log and pipe the output to less so you can read it at your own pace. If you aren't sure of the command options for tail or less, there are man pages for them.

The loge should give you some idea what is going on. If you have a working 10.5.5 partition on the system in question, you can boot it. Then in a terminal use this command to see whivh kext are loaded in your correctly running system.

kextstat > my-kext.txt
less my-kext.txt

That way you can see which graphics kext are loaded.

Good luck.

I've done with logs copying from my damaged system and i want to ask you to watch it. Here is the part of my "system.log" file from the beginning of the update process till present moment. Can you watch what's wrong with my system?

Thanks!

was finally able to install this. I had retail 10.5.5 with voodoo kernel and netkas' new pcefi9 installed with extra extensions from sonotone's dell patcher.

note: I had to open applications for repair beforehand because after the update installer was done and the system ready to be restarted I was not able to open any applications. I think that I was not able to install this before and got all kinds of kps because I did not have AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext from 10.5.5 present.

1) downloaded 372mb update

2) deleted IntelEnhancedSpeedStep.kext (xnu) to make sure I have no problems with that

3) collected 10.5.5 kexts for repair

AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, IONetworkingFamily.kext, seatbelt.kext, System.kext

4) opened up kexthelper and put all the above kexts in there, input password so that it's ready to install kexts

5) opened diskutility, pointed to leopard drive so it's ready to click repair permissions

6) installed update to get ready to restart message

7) installed above kexts with kexthelper

8) repaired permissions of osx partition

9) restarted with the installer

10) it booted twice then back into system. Everything running fine so far. I can mount dmg files, both cores are working (thanks to voodoo kernel), sound is working, time machine and wireless are working. Deep sleep is still working (thanks to netkas). full graphics capabilities. no itunes or other mouse lag issues. About this Mac works fine.

will check speedstep next...

edit1: superhai's speedstep is working. xnu's most recent IntelEnhancedSpeedStep.kext.1.4.5 breaks the system (kps on boot). to get trackpad pref pane back into system preferences follow this

thanks all for your help.

Ok guys after a long time off the osx86 installations ( been testing some linux stuff...)

I got to install iDenebs 10.5.4 and trying to update it directly to 10.5.6... it worked out pretty well.

I just used ASU to just modify the update and before i install it i installed the new voodoo kernel and system kext.

Then after that i installed the modified update and voilá here you go boys and girls .....

All is working pretty damn fine in here, check my sig for the hardware info....

Edit: I also had to keep the kexts from 10.5.5 to install after the update , mainly Seatbelt and System kexts or i would have a KP if trying to open a DMG file.....

well i think i've got it, this is how it works for me:

1° 10.5.2 kalyway > 10.5.5 combo update mysticus method

2° install voodoo kernel v 1.0

3° backup seatbelt.kext

4° apple update to 10.5.6

5° boot in a second OSX clone to be able to use keyboard

6° getting keyboard back with System functions package from mysticus post combo update

(it gives me back battery meter also)

7° clean caches to avoid possible kernel panics

8° reboot test clone and get sound back manually (taruga patch and collit kext to avoid

shutdown tarugas patch problems)

9° put seatbelt.kext and system.kext from backup and voodoo kernel installer.

10° repeat 7°

i think there will be a most efficient way to do "5° noobs step" but i don't know how

i hope it will help.

I looked at the log you provided but I can't tell what is wrong. Partly, because you didn't say anything about your system and didn't tell me what the symptoms are.

Don't forget, when I was working on my system, I had the on-screen messages from the kernel panic, the content of the windowserver.log, the system log, and some idea what I was doing when it failed.

If you put all that information together and review it for a while you will most likely see what could be causing your problem yourself.

People with success and failure. Please update here as you can

I have the charmilen boot loader, just update to 10.5.6, without doing any of the things recommended here, and everythings seems to work fine.

i do have some issues restarting, it seems to take longer to restart,

i am ok or do i need to re install different bootloader any anything else, even if every thing seems to be working.

I have.

Intel Q6600 @ 3.3 GHz

4GB Ram

Nvidia 8800GTX (osx only shows i have 256mb vram) should be 768MB.

Asus P5K-E AP/Wifi MB

PS i am very new to mac, only install it today and have used it for about 4hours, so still learning the ins and outs.

Yes, on my Gateway laptop. I found a replacement preference pane for trackpads on the msi/wind site that worked for me, and added the missing pane. http://forums.msiwind.net/mac/workaround-f...ings-t6539.html

I can confirm what was found on the msiwind forum. replacing the keyboard.prefpane from 10.5.6 (in my case about 25mb) with the one from 10.5.5 (about 12mb) brings back trackpad tab in mouse&keyboard preferences. whoever is a member there, could you please post that this also works with Dell Inspirons and Synaptic trackpads. Btw. just copying and pasting/overwriting with admin rights works to do this. grab your 10.5.5 pane from time machine backup.

edit1: I was just told that this one is better and gives its own pref pane in system preferences for the trackpad.

Seems to be working fine here on my Gateway Laptop but not without some trouble.

USB Ports are all working.

Jailbroken iPhone (2.2) is recognized and syncs fine with iTunes.

So far, so good will edit if I notice any problems.
