after.

Install 10.5, reboot with -f run miniscript, reboot, do all updates reboot -f, rerun audio installer, reboot

I did that, then the next boot failed. I rebooted with -f, and I booted, but I still don't have QE. I keep getting an error in the boot log about a dependency issue for the GMA950 kext. Also (and BTW, this isn't new) it takes about four minutes after finishing the boot process for the login window to appear.

Yeah after update it should be a bit longer I would bet the next boot is much shorter (mine boot in under a minute)

HUmm maybe we should look at some things and see if they match. Run the following

I think you are not seeing what you might expect as dmesg is truncating. If I tail the system.log itself you see the full story. However for a grahics issue I would ecpect the part I am interested in to be in the dmesg

The most interesting thing I saw was that we both have, or rather *had* the same Serial Number.

I changed mine and am working (kinda) on a simple tool to make sure that at least at install, everyone has a different one

Basically, if you use this boot flag: SerialNum=

you can set the serial number to what you want.

So I tried everything Type11 said to get QE working and it's still unsupported. Haven't switched kexts yet.

Also I just checked and I have the wonky serial number now. But with Darkten's 132 I had my unique one. Should I go back to Darkten's method? I seem to have had less issues that actually affect me. :/

Yeah after update it should be a bit longer I would bet the next boot is much shorter (mine boot in under a minute)

HUmm maybe we should look at some things and see if they match. Run the following

...

It has taken that long to boot every time, except the first post install boot (using the boot 132 disc and -f). I assume it has something to do with my video issues.

Our Extensions directories match, here is my dmesg:

Humm very strange as I know myself and darkten used my method (along with a couple others and not had the problems a few have now seen). I actually have never seen extreme not work in any of my installs. Appears my methos is more likely to have sound work and darktens more likely to have Quartz Extreme work though neither of us can reproduce ;-) I wonder if there is slight differences in the hardware or something. Very interesting. Anyway to save yourself a reinstall I would try the IOFramebuffer kext from the last page which seemed to help someone (though not sure why it is the same one I had!) and run the MiniScript again (just put it in the extensions folder on the image and run script)

Also might want to try this

sudo -s

mkdir /Volumes/EFI

mount_hfs /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/EFI (assumes you did internal disk)

cd /Volumes/EFI

./update.sh

cd /

umount /Volumes/EFI

please report your results

I reinstalled mine (using msiwindosx.iso), after patching the wifi and audio, that works great. For those wondering, mine installed on the 8GB SSD with just about 1GB free space left after install... but that doesn't leave enough for me to attempt updates to 10.5.5. Now that I've found the Ubuntu Dell Mini OS ISO, I'm gonna give that a try for now and see how I like it. Keep up the great work and progress with getting the Sleep Mode and Card Reader to work, I'll keep reading your progress and may come back to OSX86 on my Dell Mini 9 as I am impressed with the very acceptable boot time and very respectable performance once the OS is booted.

so it looks like the failing on the display family specific matching fails but it worked on mine. Very interesting. the other thing that is always interesting to me is that even on the working one the last thing is always says is the display is not usable

when you say reloaded you mean rebuilt the kext cache? Did you do it on Volumes/EFI or /System/Library/Extensions

I just want to say thanks again to all of you guys for all the help and instructions. I know that this may not be perfect but after trying the Dell Ubuntu this is way better. Maybe there will be a hack so we could use the sd slot eventually hopefully. I hope there will be a dellmini.iso tweaked for minimal install in a few months till that time I am completely happy. Thanks again for all the help and instruction. The amount of detail makes it really easy for people like me that are new to Mac.

Type11, I tried everything you suggested and I still have the long boot time and no QE. Also, Airport works if I boot with the AC disconnected, but not if the AC adaptor is attached while I am booting.

babybel, what do you mean by reload? I rebuilt the kextcache several times and still have no luck.

Hey guys, firstly i want to thank you. i was in the market for a cheap portable laptop and wanted osx. now im up and running on my dell mini 9. everything works as advertised except ssd and sleep which i knew was the case from reading through this thread. However i have one little issue. When i shutdown the mini it appears to shut off, black screen etc but the power light stays on. i have to hold the power button in to get rid of it. Any ideas would be great.

im on 10.5.5

I would just try your install again from start. I have not heard of anyone really having long boot times or wireless problems. This on top of the other problem with QE makes me thing something went awry.

Have you tried to remove anything you have added to /System/Library/Extensions and run the MiniScript again? It redoes everything.

Just a note the only place on my install you should put kext or update (minus audio installer) is on the /Volumes/EFI which has its own kext cache which can be modified and updated with

sudo -s

mkdir /Volumes/EFI

mount_hfs /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/EFI (assumes you did internal disk)

cd /Volumes/EFI

./update.sh

cd /

umount /Volumes/EFI

good news, which method did you use for install? As far as the shutdown thing I am going to guess you are on ac right? If so the light is always on. If you are on battery it is something else and might be related to the Kernel panic we see on shutdown.

I used the first method that appeared using the msi wind version not the retail disk. And this is without the ac connected aswell as it. However i do not see a kernal panic on shutdown.

Scratch that. I repaired permissions and did a shut down. It KP on me. I booted back up, did another shut down and same results. Black screen power light on but not connected to anything. Only way to get rid was to hold power button. Don't know if that tiny bit of extra info helps at all?

Howdy folks.

I just ordered my Dell Mini the other day with an ETA of 11/12. First off, thanks for everyone's contribution in getting OS X running on this little laptop. I understand that there are more pressing issues, but I was wondering if anyone thinks the card reader will be functional at some point. From what I understand, the OS doesn't even recognize the device at all. What's the difference between the card reader on the Wind (which apparently works) and the Dell Mini's? Would it be plausible to swap out the reader for a third party unit?

Considering the size of the Dell supplied SSDs, a functional card reader is pretty important to me.

Thanks in advance.

Humm very strange on the Quartz extreme. Man all these problems are so interesting as I just looked and mine is working fine and I never did a new install of the kext.

I'm thinking, maybe the kext replacement I did had nothing to do with it, just a fluke, and upon re-installing all the kexts, it just "took" somehow... who knows. Everything is working fine now...

Except for some times, when I power up (on AC) the Mac startup screen just hangs and never fully loads... Hitting the power button and restarting again, booting up a 2nd time usually works, go figure. I need to play around with it a few more days and see if this persists.

Hi all,

My attempt at doing this install on my Mini the last two days has been a complete non-starter.

Here's what happens:

I burn either darkten's or type11's 132 ISOs to CD-RW using Nero on my PC (same result with each).

Mini begins to boot off my USB>IDE adapter external drive. It quickly flashes "System config file '/com.apple.boot.S/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist' not found" before getting to the "boot:" prompt.

I hit 'enter', take out the boot CD and put in my Leopard DVD, type "9f", and hit 'enter'. The cursor moves down to the next line and blinks forever. My DVD drive never tries to spin up.

I have tried using a different DVD drive. I have tried unplugging and replugging the USB cable. I have re-burned the boot disc many times.

I just cannot figure out what's going on. Any suggestions?

Same symptoms with startup hang here occasionally. Not enough to bother me though. :)

Bad Ass little unit! :D

I had same problems using a USB adaptor with internal dvd-drive. My solution was to go out to 24-hour Walmart at 3:30am and get a HP *external* dvd drive. That worked fine, but needed to plug/unplug the usb cable 2-3 times. I would suggest getting an external cd/dvd drive, they seem to work better.

Just checked the ETA

Estimated Delivery Date is:11/13/08

That's a month

I actually just cancelled my order from Dell, mine was about a 4-week wait as well.

Luckily I was able to find one on Craigslist, brand-new in box, full specs, for $450... actually saved me $100 because of no tax + shipping.

Ebay and CL seem to be the way to go if you want one of these any time soon... Hopefully Dell will catch-up in a few months.
