I don't want to be a total jwek and pester you all too much, especially considering I don't even have a mini-9 and may wait until the next generation...

But can someone share what specifically is 'off' in the keyboard mapping? And is there a way to adjust for it?

I'm a keyboard shortcut freak, so I'd love to know how the mappings work out.

Exciting news for Ubuntu!

I thought for my second post it would be good to put up some Ubuntu information for the Dell Mini 9. I have been searching across the net to find this and finally stumbled across someone by the name of UnaClocker over at mydellmini.com forums has posted a download link to the Mini9 Restore DVD. From what I gather in the forum looks like several people have downloaded, burned the .iso and installed from the disc successfully! I'm excited for when I get my Mini around the beginning of November. Enjoy!

unfortunately I cannot get past step 4 once I swap the disks over. The retail leopard dvd will not boot (I have 10.5 Leopard retail dvd). My Mini has BIOS A01 and my external USB dvd is a Pioneer DVR-115. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

an error eventually appears after 'Using default boot device 9f' that says 'EBIOS read error: Device timeout Block 0 Sectors64

I'm getting these same errors on both a Sony/NEC internal drive via USB adaptor, and now again with a HP external dvd drive.

Which drives are you guys using that have been successful?

thanks!

Hello everybody

In 2 days, Dell will launch a new MINI named "VOSTRO A90" with this specifications :

dell1hc3.th.png

dell2mx6.th.pngthpix.gif

:P

Looking at the specs I don't see a difference between the Inspiron and the Vostro mini versions. Anybody more info? I am getting ready to order mine soon ;-)

FYI for everyone having problems with external CD/DVD drives. I was getting an error also and almost gave up until I actually unplugged the drive from the mini a couple of times. So when you get the error unplug the drive from the mini the error will repeat until you plug the drive back in. After doing this a couple times it seemed to work fine. YMMV.

My drive also had problems starting the OSX disc. So if the apple shows up make sure to look for the spinning disc underneath that will show up within a couple of minutes if not repeat the steps from the beginning. Hope this helps.

Interesting point for those getting Kernel Panics at shutdown. They happen only if no sound has come out before you shutdown. If you adjust the sound level for instance and get it to make a noise and then shutdown it shutsdown with no KP. very interesting but I did know it was the Audio doing it. Now to fix it...

Also when the battery is critical and the orange LED is flashing I never get a KP when shutting down - go figure!

For those with no sound, go back through the threads and find the standalone sound installer file that someone put up, this will fix your sound if you have 10.5.5.

Just tried making a noise and then shutting down. Got a kp as always (unplugged). :(

very strange I tried it like 10 times before posting that. I did you the sound level in the menu bar to make a noise (sometimes on first slide it does not actually make a noise). Again I don't think it gets us much farther anyway I already had discovered if you removed the two audio kext the KP goes away at shutdown. INteresting none the less!

Ok, there may be a solution here, programmatically. Could you test and see if doing a kextunload on he audio stuff, then shutting down...if this prevents the panic every time?

I believe we can catch the "will shut down" messages and write something that unloads the audio.

Yep, slid it and it popped. Oh well... :)

I am about to try it again from a fresh boot with no ac cord. Last time I had it plugged in and I don't remember if I unplugged it before or after making the volume pop.

On a side note, is everyone waiting forever for a permissions repair? Or is it just me???

yeah it takes it a long while but sometimes it does that on my mac book pro (anybody want to buy mine have the new one on order ;-) )

So very puzzling kextunloading ALCinjext and AppleHDA did not make it stop KP. It did make the volume slider go away so I know it was working... hummm....

is there a wiki or post that's updated with what works and does not with the mini 9? What hardware is good and what's not for wifi or the SSD?

It's going on sale in 2 days and I may pick one up

I've dug through this thread but not had much luck in finding absolute answers

No way did you do that; the limitations are well known and fully documented :)

no, they are not fully documented, I just read about 15 pages on this thread

half say no sound

half say no bluetooth

I know there's patches for audio and sound, and I know bluetooth works if you enable it in XP first, so there is NO updated post with what works and why and how to do it, just a hodgepodge of posts from users struggling to get it working.

what I don't know is if anyone has sleep working, that's the showstopper right there, if it does not work, even with voodoo then I'll skip the mini 9, I found posts that people were going to try the voodoo kernels, but nobody posted and said if sleep or speedstep worked

I first tried the LG Slim (Best Buy $99) and ran into the same problem. Then tried the Samsung SE-204 Super-WriteMaster (Circuit city $99) and worked great. With XP Running, you have to plug in the external drive and let it auto-install, etc. Then pop in the .iso and restart and boot from CD.

OK... I tried it again from a fresh boot with no ac cord and sure enough it shutdown properly!

Just for the record, I too have tried it with success many times.

So as long as you initiate a sound while there is no ac cord plugged in and then shut down, NO KP!

I guess you should "skip the mini 9" mega. No sleep here. :)

Well...wake from sleep doesn't work. You're done :) Everything else you mentioned above does in fact work.

With stuff that is known to work, and people having a problem, don't really know what to tell you.

If you buy/have an apple retail leo install, and do what either type11 or i tell ya, you get yerself from a dell mini 9 the most compatable mac osx netbook out there *out of the box*.

You do it some other way, YMMV.

But for you, having a netbook that has everything that is on apple hardware working, (audio/video/wireless/wired lan/ports/usb/media buttons) and things that don't exist ignored (multicard reader) with exactly 1 - 1.5 Known Issues (wake from sleep hang, weird shutdown thing from time to time) is a non-starter for you, then i'd say go ahead and pass...Apple will likely make a product for you after Dell proves enough people want them ;)

The thing is, I don't remember this happening before. We changed something.

Does anyone have the powermamagement.bundle that PeteRock posted way, way back installed *in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration ?

I remember he specifically posted a MiniBattery and MiniSleep post.

At least, I think it was him :)

I have one that is the best fully functioning version that I have found and am currently using on a Dell D830. :)
