cbmkgd
From what I understand from sn8k's instructions, you begin as if you were installing winxp, going through the first steps until the first reboot: the winxp installer will have copied preliminary files to the disk. But when rebooting, rather than continue with the winxp install, just switch with the vista dvd and begin the vista installation on that same partition, hoping that it will understand somehow it is an update of winxp (this last part is my interpretation) and keep the boot.ini and winxp's boot sector. I'll have to find place -- or another hd -- to mess natively with vista. There's also this method: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...c=18677&hl= Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11339-howto-xp-osx-1044-1048-native-dual-boot/page/43/#findComment-192878 Share on other sites

cbmkgd
other than the boot.ini file what other files are needed? maybe its possible to manually extract those files from xp cd? The bootsector is located at the beginning of the partition. aoss keeps a backup copy of the original bootsector somewhere within the main bootwiz folder (where aoss was installed) under the name bootsector.sys. Probably sn8k meant that vista would detect that boot sector and update winxp accordingly. Not sure why vista wouldn't just take over as it would in a clean install though. pmg
Hey, first post! Basically I got through EVERYTHING you said except while it was installing, it stopped and said there were errors and it could not proceed. I have the following Acer Travelmate 4000LCi Pentium M 710 (1.4ghz) 768Ram Checked CPU-Z and saw I was compatible. I'm trying one more time, if it doesn't work then I'll find another ISO. Anyone have similar specs that can lend a helping hand? Thanks. EDIT: Tried a 2nd time, same thing. While installing it said there were errors and installation could not be completed. Restart Now. Does this mean my hardware is not compatible, or would I have to do a full install to verify it won't run? andregcasal
Hi pmg! You can check at the Hardware Compatibility Tables (HCT) and see if your hardware is suported. That's on the Wiki: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCLPart By the way, what ISO did you use? Rammjet
Tried a 2nd time, same thing. While installing it said there were errors and installation could not be completed. There is something wrong with the DVD or the iso is corrupt. Try reburning the DVD at the slowest speed possible. If available, use a different brand and/or type (dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw) of media. If that doesn't help, re-download the iso and burn it at the slowest speed possible. pmg
Oops forgot the Iso. It's the MacOSX_10.4.6DVDPATCHED_Myz.iso. I'm trying it one more time. It gets through installing the Additional Essentials, and then when it starts writing files from the Additional Speech Voices, it gets to 18% completed, it stops and I get this message: "There were errors installing the software" "Please try installing again" I'll try burning it again at the lowest speed, and let you guys know. Thanks. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11339-howto-xp-osx-1044-1048-native-dual-boot/page/43/#findComment-193353 Share on other sites
TKJay
ok so i was working on windows in order to set up VMware just in case i had to use it since native boot hasnt really worked for me yet since i have no clue how to set up my SATA drive to be recognized and when i rebooted acronis didn detect any boot files or anything and wouldnt even load into the OS selector. Before it was acting just fine. Now i cant get into any of my windows systems and am forced to use knoppix (not that im complaining haha ) but i need to get back into my windows. Anyone know how to fix this problem or bypass the OS selector so i can go to the windows bootloader or something? Thanks alot for help. cbmkgd
Seems you have the additional problem of not having the comma (,) key on your keyboard... or maybe it's just punctuation deficiency. Use your winxp cd to fix your boot/mbr; there are many posts in this thread on how to do this. As for acronis os selector, it has a good manual (link in a previous post). Uninstall it if it still gives you problems. For dual boot, ntldr (chain0 method) and/or darwin loader are enough and often less problematic. pmg
Great news, you can add one to the WORKS list cause it runs on my Acer Travelmate 4000 Laptop. Unfortunately, nothing works. Not even the laptop keyboard or touchpad. Sound does work, but not internet. I'll fiddle more with it later. Thanks again guys. EDIT: Has anyone else encountered the problem with the Keyboard on laptops not working? Would that be a BIOS thing I can just enable/disable? Anyways, I'm going to install the touchpad drivers and see if those work. Thanks again guys. andregcasal
Hi pmg! If you have a partition try installing Mac OS X onto that partition using VMWare Workstation. Follow this video tutorial on that http://blog.adonias.cl/leer.php?id=78&Lang=EN. After you've installed Mac OS X in that partition just go to your ISO and copy chain0 to your C:\. Then right-click to "Properties" in "My Computer" and go to "Advanced". In the "Startup and Recovery" hit "Settings" and then edit C:\boot.ini and add this line to it: C:\chain0="Apple Mac OS X" Make sure "Time to display list of operating systems:" is checked and change that to something like 5 seconds. Then just reboot and you should have Windows XP and Mac OS X as boot options. If you run into trouble reed what i've written to TKJay Hi TKJay you can boot from your Windows CD and when you get to the part where you see your HD's and partitions hit "R" to go to the Recovery Console. Once there type this: bootcfg /rebuild This repairs you'r boot.ini file. Reboot and hopefully you're able to boot Windows Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11339-howto-xp-osx-1044-1048-native-dual-boot/page/43/#findComment-193529 Share on other sites
pmg
andregcasal - Thanks for the info. But I got it to install. Guess the first burn was bad. But now i'm online. Ethernet works, sound works. Mouse and Keyboard only work when they're plugged into the laptop. It doesn't recognize the onboard touchpad and onboard keyboard. I can't seem to find drivers on the wiki. Any help? Rammjet
There are very few drivers available to download. Most people have to modify the drivers that Apple provides. You need to share what devices - brand and model - that you need to get working so people can point you to potential methods for modifying a driver to work with your device. Whitezombi
I have OS X installed on a seperate HD. I get to the point where all the text rolls up from the bottom of the screen & the screen goes black for a little while & my pc reboots. I had no problems installing OS X. I just cannot boot into it. I used - MacOSX_10.4.6DVDPATCHED_Myz I am also using the Chain0 method. I could not get Arconis OS Selector to work properly. Any ideas? TKJay
Ok i got OSX to install using VMWare after fixing my boot (thanks andregcasal and cbmkgd, even if you dont like my lack of grammar it wasnt intentional :-) ) but now when i try to boot mac from the list of operating systems (im not using the arconis OS selector for the time being, im using the chain0 method) it goes to the next screen and gives this error: Chain booting error Any ideas? Also, i followed the steps you outlined before andregcasal about using the chain0 from the iso and editing the boot.ini My problem is pretty much exactly the same as WhiteZombi except my OSx is installed on a seperate partition on the same harddrive as XP. andregcasal
Hi Rammjet. On my desktop i've installed MacOSX_10.4.6_GoatsecxDVD.iso without any problems except iChat and some other programs crash right after opening and the net stays pretty slow some times. Specifications: Motherboard: Asus P4P800SE Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz RAM: 512 MB Graphic Card: Radeon 9100 Now on my Laptop Acer Travelmate 2410 i installed MacOSX_10.4.6_GoatsecxDVD.iso sucessfully but the text starts rolling up and when the graphical interface appears it stops completelly. So for these two computers could you point me to some drivers please? And if there are very few drivers i wouldn't mind creating a webpage dedicated to them. Hi Whitezombi! Could you give us some details on your machine please? That would be helpfull. Hi TKJay! Hum... "Chain booting error" never heard of it and i'm not sure if that's an error from boot.ini or from the Chain0 itself. Try checking boot.ini for errors. Remember "Chain0" has to be in C:\ and boot.ini must have this line "C:\Chain0="Something that describes Mac OS X"". TKJay
Andregcasal, im sure that the chain0 is under C:\ and i have that line of code in my boot.ini, ive tried both methods of doing it outlined both here by you and the one in the VMware install guide. Also, would having two partitions of windows be affecting this? because i am triple booting two copies of windows and the mac osx. plemax
Main (10.4) is working too. I just have trouble with mouse. It doesn’t work. It did work during the installation and it doesn’t move in OS. Keyboard is half working. I mean I can’t switch windows and close them. So I don't know what to do because I can't download and install patches in OSX I just can look at it. Looks nice. Any advice would be appreciated.
