First excuse my bad english, it's not my native language. But i'll try my best.

Back to topic :
I like gentoo, because with gentoo you learn very much about linux. How it's working, some bash commands, how to configure programms without a configuration-program, only with config files. And i know whats going on @ my pc, and can control what should run, what not, and how, without opening many systemconfig programms.
But sometimes the long compiling times are not nice, or when you had after a bigger update many config files to update.

my only complaint about linux is getting installed apps to work, half the time they take forever to install because of mising or broken dependenicies and somteims after gettig them finally to install the dam thing doesnt launch

I'm a fan of puppy linux for older machines.  I have it installed on a decrepit Thinkpad 390e with a 333mhz pII , 192mb ram, and a 6gb hd and it flies like it has 10x those specs

I I tried PCLinuxOS (.93a junior) and was pleasantly surprised. The live cd installer was very fast and offered more options than ubuntu's (like where to install the boot loader and which one). Also it included ndiswrapper which was easy very to get working (just installed the .inf and did a 'modprobe ndiswrapper'). If you have a wireless card in Ubuntu that needs ndiswrapper you have to first connect to the internet some other way and then install it and hope that you can get it working. Ndiswrapper is notorious for not always working on Ubuntu. PCLinuxOS is KDE-debian based and it looks good by default. I didn't have to add any repos to find what I wanted either, just fired up synaptic and found what I wanted. The default desktop:

I have to say Ubuntu, i have used many distros and its the best for me, fast, simple for the n00bs, but good enough for experienced users, powerful package manager, never had any problems with it

for my servers, i always use archlinux, fast, secure, simple.

because the * representes ether U for unix or L for linux  or ne thing else that has nix at the end, it can also include bsd.

Well, it's not a distro in the traditional sense.

No packages, no fancy easy-way-out auto-download-and-compile like one has with Gentoo.

If someone really want's to learn how a Linux system is built, from the ground up, one wants to use the Linux system I'm thinking of.

And what is this other system I refer to?

The Linux From Scratch (LFS) Project

As far as learning a Linux system inside and out, there isn't anything else out there right now that can touch it, including Gentoo.

I've got three systems running this project (filesystem, MythTV machine, and my laptop) and wow, it's been a real learning experience.

And yes, I tried Gentoo.  IMO, it's initscript layout, among a few other things, too screwy.

(For the record, I cut my Linux teeth on Slackware, go Patrick! )

I'm new in Linux, started at fedora. But now i for ubuntu because it is more compatible with
my laptop , its package management and documents help me to save time get thing work.

I tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, PCLinux, and Suse, and honestly each has its own strenghts and weaknesses, but I decided to go with Suse because it had better supprt for my hardware.  Ubuntu was next but had problems with my monitor and would only run 1024x768.

I've used just about every Linux distro on that list (and even the BSD one ;-)), but I have to say that when I want to get a distro installed quickly I always go with Ubuntu.  Really nice setup (try the alternate cd is you want more control and flexibility), great drivers (threw the 6.10 Edgy Eft release on a stock Dell laptop and got EVERYTHING - including battery meter, etc. right out of the box), and I really like apt-get/synaptic for keeping things up to date.

I just brought up an old PIII Sony that I had laying around with the server version of Ubuntu and I am blown away by the usefullness of that old box - I never see more  than 10-20% CPU uilization (on a box with Apache2, MySQL 5, PHP 5, & Zenoss monitoring). I tried to use RedHat on the same box and it was a total pig.

So, I guess you could say I'm a real fan.  Cool forums for support too...

I have to say Ubuntu also, i have used a couple of distros like Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE interface) Gentoo, Fedora and even Trisquel!! and Ubuntu its far my best choice, with tools like Synaptic the apt-get that made also a great choice for newbies as FriedCPU says and good enough for advenced users, I`ve not complains so far with it... Linux for human beings…Great choice!

maybe DragoFly and Free BSD / Solaris Unix but getting a GUI on it a pain in my ass....as wel as non windows linux unix os but sure seem liek it OS's (MenuetOS / SkyOs)
