OK, I'm going to start posting the most frequently used incorrect Mac comments in this topic, so all we have to do is point the errant person to this topic.

1. System 8 or OS 6

Up until System 7.5, the Mac OS was referred to by System numbers, i.e. System 6. After System 7.5, the Mac OS was referred to by OS numbers, such as OS 7.6 the first Mac OS to bear such a name.

2. Apple stole Dashboard from Konfabulator

It was in fact, Konfab who stole it first from Apple. Waaaaay back in the Classic days (Classic being pre-OS X), Apple had widgets on their Macs. This somehow stopped (I'm unsure as to when/why) and then Konfabulator took up the idea of having widgets on the Mac. Apple then decided to bring back widgets with OS 10.4. So Apple stole from Konfab who originally stole from Apple.

3. PowerPC processors are inferior

This is a common misconception based on the idea that a 2 GHz chip will be exactly twice as fast as a 1 GHz chip. The logic behind this is pretty sound, until you realize that different processor architectures are being compared here. PowerPC chips use 7 stages per clock, while Intel used 20 (and is now learning to make chpis do more at lower clock speeds) and AMD uses something I don't know. I make a comparison to counting and say at the same speed, it's faster to count to 7 than to 20. So Intel makes it processors run at a faster clock speed, basically making their chip count faster. Plus, you have to take in optimizations for certain factors (i.e. Altivec or Word being embedded deeply in Windows) before saying "A is better than B."

4. Software X doesn't have a Mac version

There are more Windows apps, but what are you currently using? MS Office has a Mac version. Photoshop? That's on mac too. Premiere? Drop that like a bad habit and use iMovie. Microsoft FrontPage? iWeb. Sims? Mac version. Chances are, there is an equivalent Mac version for the most often used Windows pieces of software. Plus, some of the best selling software for Windows is...VIRUS SCANNING UTILITIES. Don't really need that one on a Mac, and ClamXAV is free if you're paranoid.

5. I can't upgrade a Mac

Most often, people say this meaning "I want more RAM." As it says in my sig, how many people looking for a system are going to add a PCI card (paraphrased, but it's still true)? I personlly don't know of anyone who has added a new graphics card, much less added a PCI card.

Now I'll grant you that the Hackintosh community probably does more with PCI cards, so it reflects a biased sample. 99% of users don't even know what to do with the expansion ports on their systems. So why have them?

6. If I get an Apple, I have to get Apple everything.

No you don't. There are even USB adapters so you can use your old PS2 keyboards and mice. Nearly every printer has a USB port on it. All good DV cams have Firewire plugs.

OK, what others can be added here?

I think this is absurd.

What is absurd is refuting an argument by sidestepping it.

"Macs arent upgradable"

They are upgradable because no one needs to upgrade them. If you somehow want to upgrade a mac, it's more that there's something wrong with you and you're "abnormal" than anything else.

"There is more software for windows"

This is wrong because it's actually correct, but you wont need that software on a mac, because mac people dont play games like pc users do, and if they do, they stick with mac games like WoW and Starcraft...

"PowerPC processors are inferior"

They arent, because you cant compare Apples and Oranges (Apple has dont just this, by an agressive marketting campaign over their switch to the Intel platform).

Microsoft FrontPage? iWeb.

iWeb is to Frontpage as MS Paint is to Photoshop. You really can't compare them. iWeb was designed for simpletons who never learned a line of code in their life, and they rely on templates. FrontPage blows it away. Try to design a professional webpage using iWeb. And to raise the stakes, it can't be a blog, some page about your family vacation, or a page showing your podcast on mineral water. I dare you. Try it...

7. Apple is a monopoly

Boy it does look that way, doesn't it? I mean, the only way to use the Mac OS is to buy a computer from Apple. Well, wait, Apple isn't the only computer company you can buy from. You can buy from Dell, HP, etc. The only issue with that is you have to use Windows. Or Linux. But you can use Linux on a Mac too. Fact is there are lots of choices for your computing usage, and Apple represents just one of many many choices. It also represents one OS out of many many choices. And all of those choices are pretty viable choices.

Apple isn't preventing you from exercising your right to choice when it comes to what brand of computer you're using. You have a right to choose to use whatever brand of computer you want. You also have the right to choose whatever OS you want to use, even if those choices are limited by certain factors. Apple isn't forcing you to use their OS or buy their computers.

"There is more software for windows"

This is wrong because it's actually correct, but you wont need that software on a mac, because mac people dont play games like pc users do, and if they do, they stick with mac games like WoW and Starcraft...

I changed that one. It wasn't exactly the thought I had in mind.

I added a new pcie gpu to my system (not a mac, but i did), all the games come out for windows, and always before mac even if they do for mac, only idiots dont know how to use expansion ports, and people who just dont care... oh, and heres one to add, apple hardware is way overpriced, oh wait, thats true!!!!!!!

oh, and on a personal note, i cant stand most of the mac users i know, and i especially cant stand the people who work at the appple store.... /rant i kno, but still valid, but to defend you, who cares if there is more software on windows, theres like 5000 things thta do THE SAME THING... but we have alot more hack/crack/warez <3

iLife isn't a professional suite to begin with. It's made for every-day Joes to get things done easily. All the apps within the suite, for that matter, really don't replace higher-end Windows programs.

It used to be a lot worse a few years ago, but people still complain about the lack of Mac software. Go to google, type in "video editor," download the first app that's on the list, and it'll be a .exe guarenteed. The only way you'd find Mac software is on a special site that lists Mac programs, or else if you already knew what you were looking for ahead of time. Other than that, the chances of browsing the web to random websites almost ensures that any downloadable apps will be for windows. People are desperate for virtualization for a good reason...

8. Macs are more expensive

I decided to put this up to the Mythbuster test and went to both Apple.com and Dell.com to configure some systems. So I went with the following two cheap systems:

1. Apple Mac mini 1.5 GHz CoreSolo prices at $599.

2. Dell Dimension B110, priced today (8/12/06) at $279.

The following changes were applied to the systems to make them as equal as possible. In all honesty, I expect the Dell to remain cheaper:

1. The Dell was upgraded to WinXP Pro at a price of $159 more. Apple markets OS X as pro, so I went with Pro on Dell also.

2. Changed RAM in Dell to 512 MB at a price of $50

3. Mac mini hard drive changed to 80 GB at a price of $50

4. While unable to remove the monitor and keyboard/mouse, I had to go to Macworld and obtain a price of $65 to remove both items.

5. Added speakers to the Dell system, at a cost of $20.

6. Added Microsoft Works to Dell and Appleworks to Mac mini. Both were $79.

7. Added antivirus software to Dell at a cost of $79. This isn't truly needed on a Mac...yet

8. Upgraded the Dell to the Deluxe Entertainment pack, as it more closely matches iLife. It was $49.

9. Added the Apple USB modem to the Mac mini. Cost was $49.

10. Added extended warranties of three years to both systems. This was $109 for the Dell and $149 to the Mac mini.

OK, at this point the score is: $759 for the Dell. $926 for the Mac mini. There's more to the problem, though, so let's continue. The sites I chose for purchases were strictly arbitrary, as I would not accept a freeware substitute (since it would make the playing field inherently unfair):

11. The Mac mini has Quicken. I went to Intuit and obtained a price of $30 for the cheapest version, so we add that to the Dell to make things even.

12. Comic Life has no Windows version. So we can either remove $30 (I rounded up) from the mini or add $30 to Dell for software of your choice. In this case, I decided to give people their choice of any $30 piece of software.

13. Big Bang Board Games presents a similar problem. Substitute a $25 piece of software for the Dell.

14. I needed a substitute for iDVD. The cheapest one I found at PCMall was $79.

15. I need to add wireless capabilities to the Dell to make things fair. I found a cheap one for $20 at PCMall. Unfortunately, Granny won't be able to install the wireless PCI card (because nobody shopping for el cheapo uses PCI cards). So a USB model is about $30 for Granny.

16. Bluetooth is needed on the Dell to make things fair again. This was another $20 spent at PCMall, and this one is for USB

So now our total is $933 ($943 if you went for the USB wireless) for the now comparably equipped Dell and $926 for the Mac mini. Truthfully, I thought the Dell (even with everything added) would wind up being maybe $50 cheaper than the mini. I really did, and I thought the myth would be confirmed.

The Mac Pro is infinitely faster than the PowerMac G5

Again, this is related to the megahertz myth, in that you can't compare two different processor architectures based solely on clock speeds. In testing conducted by Macworld, though, we get to see the myth put to the test. In looking at their chart, the only item giving the Mactels a speed advantage is the game test (which is natural, considering that out of the box, the Mac Pro's also have a faster graphics card). The Adobe suite gives an advantage to the PPC Macs, but they aren't included in the overall Speedmark score (but MS word does factor in). While it does show that the Mac Pros are faster in tasks, they are only slightly faster, not stupidly faster as some posters have put it.

The Mac Pro 2.66 beats the 2.5 quad core in every benchmark except Photoshop CS2 (rosetta) and Itunes, and then it is only beaten by 2 seconds.

Get a life.

The entire point is that while they are faster, they are not tihs "OH MY GOD THEY ARE SO FRICKING FASTER THAT PPC SUCKS" kind of reasoning that certain posters have been screaming. Maybe you're the one who needs to get a life if you can't see the facts.

Yah, uh

Please show an example of someone saying that Mac Pro's are a million times or even 10 times faster, or even SO MUCH faster than the equivalent G5s.

From what i can see, you're manifesting.

ahem

Why the HELL would you think of getting a G5? The Mac Pro is moer powerful (benchmarks show this), cheaper, plus you are on intel and can dual boot XP if you need to game or something and over time the PPC's will be worthless when the move from PPC is complete.

Of course, you're already engaging in a shout down over there also. I'm trying to be reasonable (trying, but you make it extremely hard to have an honest discsussion) here, while you're trying to engage in shout downs and petty name calling.

I'm finished trying to reason with someone who has nothing better than to call people poopyheads.

I have to agree - the Mac Pro is significantly faster than the G5 PowerMac - although the PowerMac is still a good machine.

Yup, and that's the whole crux of the argument. PPC Macs don't "suck."

While the Mac Pro's are faster (there's no argument there), they are not screamingly faster (and here's where the argument starts), and a G5 tower is still a viable option for those looking for a powerful system.

Please point to someone saying that the Mac Pro is screamingly faster than the G5.

Your argument is that people are saying that, yet you cant find a single example. Someone "implying" something isnt an example, because you're just manifesting it.

So, what you're saying is that it's more reasonable to pay the same amount of (or more) money for a system that's being phased out?

I've already stated that if you're getting a good deal on a G5, it would make sense. It doesnt, however, make sense to pay $3200 for a Quad G5 2.7 when you can pay less for a machine that's roughly equivalent and part of the new line.
