MacBook Air

Numberzz

More rumors of the MacBook Air are floating around, so here is what they say. According to Wired, the new laptop is supposed to be really thin, and shaped like a teardrop. Which means it is thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom, near the keyboard. The new laptop is supposed to use Apple's new scheme with aluminum & glass; silver on black. The new MacBook is expected to be without a CD/DVD drive, and possibly use solid-state storage. Think it's real? Tell us here.

I've completed high school 3 years ago

Really? You mean it takes that long to get a GED through the mail? You'd think they'd spring for a little better shipping method ;)

"The World's Thinnest NoteBook" implies more than just 1 meaning

Not to anyone with common sense.

It also does not say, "on the market".

It doesn't have to  It's a CURRENT model AND IS available for sale. That would imply that it's on the market. DOH!! Not many discontinued models on the market. Maybe you're so confused because you don't understand what the word 'market' means:

Market:

noun: the world of commercial activity where goods and services are bought and sold.

noun: the customers for a particular product or service.

noun: a marketplace where groceries are sold.

Gee it looks like your precious Mitsubishi Pedion is not currently on the market is it? You mean you couldn't figure any of this out for yourself? Let's review; now you think that all ads should end with the words "on the market" and we already know that you couldn't figure out that 0.41 cm is thinner than 1.80 cm, so you can't be good in math, and by your display above we also know that your reading skills are a bit lacking... so do you want to impress us some more? :P

Anyone have a link to the battery life on a Macbook with wifi turned on?
Do you mean life as in how long before you have to recharge it, or life as in how long before you have to replace it? A lot depends on if they cycle the battery or not, most people don't and that shortens the batteries life span. You can see this page for more. If you mean 'life' as in hours before a recharge is needed then this page might help.

I'm just so tired about hearing of this waste of a product. It makes less sense than anything Apple's done in the last 6-7 years, easily, and is seriously a negative thing to me - it shows that Apple is certainly headed in the wrong direction.

Where does it say, "Fastest Notebook on the Market"? This is like GM saying the Corvette is the Fastest Car in the World, when we all know the McLaren F1 is faster. Just because it isn't "on the market", doesn't mean it's not the fastest (or thinnest, in this case). But since you're an Apple Fanboy, of course you're going to back-up Apple's poor product and it's lame advertising. I'd hate to be a lowlife.

Anyways, sandbags, why should anyone listen to you? You're the one who said Leopard wasn't licensed. :(

I meant just on a single charge, how long would it last when on wifi, so I could compare it with the likes of the MBA. I'm still torn between them... leaning towards the MBA, but the performance of the regular MB is drawing me in...

Apple said 5 hours with Wi-Fi on.

I get the same with my MacBook with Wi-Fi on.

I guess it's reliant on your screen brightness... I don't have it turned up all the way -- it's always sitting at about a quarter.

cool! similar battery lives... and can anyone vouch for LEDs over normally backlit displays? That's a big deal for me...

The MB is looking more and more like a better deal.

i honestly don't get the point of the mba. the only reason why i would buy it, is because it's very small and cool looking

if i spend 1800 for a laptop, i want to use it for watching movies, playing some games, surfing, music and work. the mba only can do surfing and working. it has no dvd drive, so you can't watch dvd's and the hard drive is way to small to store some movies, music, software and games.

really, it's a turn-off! if i go to university next year, i'll buy a macbook or macbook pro, but definitely not a mba

MB are for wannabe macusers, only MBP and MP are for the real :offtopic:

ya i hate those wanna be users... you're not accepted into the mac fan club until you spend at least $3000 for a $1500 computer.

Go back to sleep clide. Keep your fingers crossed and maybe one day you'll wake-up and they will have invented some new technology where they can give you some common sense.

This is like GM saying the Corvette is the Fastest Car in the World

:(

No it's not! No manufacture here said that anything was "xxxxxx in the world". Stop putting words in their mouth, or is that the only way that you can satisfy your ego?

you're an Apple Fanboy

Well, in all honesty I'm a fan of Peaches and Oranges too, especially those oranges that are half grapefruit-half orange. Wow, 9 grams of fiber. Good stuff. In-fact the only fruit I'm not a fan of is you clide ;) Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree.

I'd hate to be a lowlife.

Too late. [joke]...insert obvious joke here...[/joke]

Go to the store and spend 30 minutes with both of them side by side. These units are geared for two different markets so you'll never be able to accurately decide by what you see on paper (or on the net). If you can't go to the store to compare them then wait a few months until some honest reviews come out. The biggest drawback that I see for the MB Air is that it doesn't have Firewire. If you'd need Firewire then there is no need to go any further. If you don't use Firewire then the MB Air offers some advantages. Keep in mind that 99.9% of all those who are bashing the MB Air have never even held one in their hands, let alone use one. Plus they don't have a clue about the ultra-portable market. The product hasn't even been out for a week, isn't even on stores shelves, and yet they are seemingly 'experts' on the product  Remember, you are spending close to 2 grand here. Get the product that is best for YOUR needs, whichever one that might be :)

Exactly what I plan on doing! Although if I know myself, and I think I do, I'll be getting the MBA! I've always cherished portability, and as it stands, it is my choice.

over all, I like the look, weight, etc of the Air but it really sucks that Apple did not include a optical drive. They just assume (and we all know what happens when we assume, yes?) that we are in a wireless networked world. Yes, maybe in the elite Apple towers but there are many time I might carry my old G3 iBook around and have to burn a disc (or view/load one) for a friend. What does Jobs want, that I make sure I am wirelessly tethered to a network? Nah, no good for me.

Overall, yeah, I like it, just sad about the optical drive. I'll pass

I don't think so. Yes, wireless is a big deal but it would appear that they are more interested in making a laptop that:

A.) Is as light and convenient to carry around as possible.

B.) Has no moving parts (disk drive, hard drive, etc.)

This is a good direction for the laptops to be moving in. When prices start to drop for solid state drives, there is really no reason to be using the current style anymore, as they are less dependable. Someone's got to take the first step in this direction, and I'm glad that Apple is doing it. It will force other manufactures to copy. I just hope that the other manufactures include a Firewire port :(

After much thought and consideration, I have pre-ordered the Macbook Air and yes, I will post a nice review, complete with video and lots of pictures, as soon as I get it. I'll make a topic somewhere with the link and whatnot... I'll even do it the same day that I get it! Right now, Apple says that it will ship by the 11th and arrive by the 21st, but if their reputation is any indication, I'll get it on the 11th because it will have shipped a few days before. Stay tuned!

Congratulations Urbz :)

It might be better though if you live with the product a few days before you review it. That would be more accurate and a less 'emotional' based review :)

Looking forward to your review :P

Tell you what: I'll put it through its paces before the whole thing goes up, but pictures and a video seem perfect for a preview of sorts.

And I'm really excited!

nahh... I could probably go down myself to Burlington to get it, but it's not worth it.

It's $1800 USD, so plus 6% (I think it's 6%...) for tax, plus duties to bring it over the border...

Over here, it's $1900 CAD, but I got a student discount bringing the price down $100, and we get taxes back by declaring it as a company expense, which means I pay a nice $1800 flat. And it gets shipped right to my door ASAP.

I know, I know, way to beat the system!

Declaring stuff at the border? What does that mean? :P:D

Yep, if you're a student, that's a great route to go.

Whatever people say, MacBooks are great. Why carry a 15" laptop when you can have a 13.3", maybe you don't get a 2.4 GHz processor, but you carry a lot less. If you really need a powerful computer, go for the Mac Pro. Also MacBook Air is cool, but I can't use CD's on that Mac... Just borrow drives...

Did you see the price of the MacBook with 4 Gigs ram and 250GB hd?

Haha, good point... MacBooks become Mac Pros when you add options.
