EFiX: OSx86 gone commercial?

apowerr

efi-x.com, last updated June 9th, claims to offer the ability to install OS 10 on a non mac with the retail disc. The EFiX website states:

EFiX is the best solution for installing and using Mac OS X on your PC.

It allows its user to install Mac OS X straight from the original DVD without having to worry about patches,

replacing files and anything like that.

That means you can buy a regular PC, Mac OS X and EFiX and enjoy what the Mac users have always enjoyed:

unmodified Mac OS X on your computer, safe, easy and fast, exactly the way it should be.

The development of EFiX took a lot of time.

During the development phase, we had to deal with various problems, including sabotage.

This process also involved testing, which has been conducted for the last 6 months in production environments.

Industry leading professionals(who work for TV stations, recording studios and many others) rely on EFiX and Mac OS X running on standard PC hardware to get their tasks done.

EFiX is in the final testing phase.

All the testing has went far better than what we expected and the testers have given positive feedback.

We have planned to release it on 23rd of June, 2008. More information will be added soon.

Longtime OSx86 contributor netkas has posted EFiX in action on his blog. According to netkas, EFiX is hardware which plugs into your USB port.

As the June 23rd release approaches, many questions about EFiX remain unanswered:

-Is it an EFI emulator like PC_EFI or Chameleon?

-Is the USB device required every time you boot or just during installation?

-While this device may allow OS 10 to be installed, won't the driver situation be just like that of the OSx86 project?

-How will Apple respond to this?

-Will EFiX's EFI implementation be usable on traditional OSx86 DVDs?

Something of note is the EFiX contact page:

International dealers:

(If you can not find dealers in your region please contact us)

Germany

Россия

Украина

Taiwan R.O.C.

P.R.China

Japan

Korea

Notice here that the United States, along with many other countries are ignored. Also, netkas who has a sample of the device, stated:

they don't plan to sell it in US.

So, forget about dmcs in this case.

Thoughts?

I hope it's not, cause that mean it's like an OEM product, so you have to be sure of your motherboard choise and take care of it. (or make a stock.)

If so, lets hope it's upgradeable for new mb's

He doesn't write English very well so it's hard to tell what he means by that. My understanding is EFiX emulates the EFI BIOS of different motherboards. That's why you have to order based on a specific motherboard. As far as I know, very little has been done in the EFI area other than an intermediate layer (thanks, netkas) that translates calls for EFI functions to standard BIOS calls. EFiX seems to be actual EFI code itself. In that case there would not be any "kext" code in it at all, so he might be right.

BTW I think you overestimate the "contributions" of this "community" in this area. Fact is, 99.5% of hackintosh code is provided by Apple. The rest is provided by maybe 20 people. 20 people cranking out code used by hundreds of thousands of people does not meet my definition of "community". To me it translates into "20 dedicated people producing code for the leeches". The ratio of people actually contributing to the ones taking and using it is at least 10,000 to 1. You "our community this" and "our community that" types crack me up.

I understand EFiX would "be" the efi code itself, however I bet they included a couple of kexts onto the chip to support a bit broader hardware? Might be wrong.

I wasn't reffering to the "x86 community" per se, but to the open source freely available code for various device drivers for bsd/linux kernels which I suppose would help driver writers so they don't have to go from scratch (as you've used as a starting point for the bcm ethernet card driver).

Mine is still stuck at the customs... I know why now, they need a real address instead of a p.o. box... If I only knew that... Should be here this friday though.

Just my fifty pence, here, as I have no connection whatsoever with the company.

Startup companies, unless they have been put together by a team with a lot of business experience and contacts, rarely hit their target dates to begin with. It's a given. It's hard and frustrating work and they deserve supportive words. The mistake, here, has been a lack of communication to smooth the path, to the extent that many doubt it exists as a functioning product. Also, not to the labor the much repeated point but why weren't there reviews, months and months ago, even if of a work in progress?

For sure...

Thanx to keep this place clean!

I'm realy curious about this stuff (i.e. EFI-X) but I don't understand the way they communicate... Who do they think we are ? dummies consummers ?

Let's post a review then we'll be fixed on what it is...

I appreciate keeping things tidy as well, but that new topic had actual pictures, which means it's not just a rumor anymore. I think it's "news" when the product is actually being delivered after so many people called it fake. Now Snow Leopard, that's still a rumor. At least its capabilities are rumored, but it has has 2 forum topics here. I guess that's different somehow.

I can understand waiting for an actual review, although whoever started that topic might think twice about posting one if he thinks his topics are getting deleted. And the admins seem to have an axe to grind about EFiX for some reason.

Pictures already Here
