Some keen eyed users might have noticed that on the Demonoid tracker is finally back up after months of being quiet.

ping inferno.demonoid.com
PING inferno.demonoid.com (124.217.253.30): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 124.217.253.30: icmp_seq=0 ttl=42 time=2026.367 ms

64 bytes from 124.217.253.30: icmp_seq=4 ttl=42 time=4232.324 ms

What does this mean? Well, if you have any Demonoid torrents that you still have that you are trying to download, you can start to download it again. The best part about this is that when the site was taken down, the servers weren't taken away, just the ISP stopped giving "flow" to the servers. So when the site is back up, you should be able to log in again with all your up/down statuses still there.

EDIT: It appears that the old 404 error that Demonoid had is back! Link

Well on the other hand, if you ping "http://inferno.demonoid.com" instead of plain inferno.demonoid.com, it doesn't loopback:

Just when I thought this thread had gone crazy, it takes yet another twist into the ridiculous. If Microsoft™ Ping™ really did do that, then I'm glad I don't use it :)http:// is the application level protocol, and defaults to TCP, port 80.

Ping does not use TCP protocol or indeed any ports at all, it uses ICMP protocol instead. It should not be possible so solicit a ping from an address starting in http://. All I can assume is that microsoft ping tries to be ntelligent and just strips the http:// and resolves the demonoid ip address via DNS.

What I can't explain is why "ping inferno.demonoid.com" would return 127.0.0.1 and "ping http://inferno.demonoid.com" would return a real address. In case anyne is interested...:

Is it possible that those who get 127.0.0.1 are running tracker blacklisting plugins on their machine?

That would make sense since blacklists might treat the demonoid tracker as compromised while it is down to stop people conecting to who-knows-what server. Those seeing the "real" ip address might not be running blacklist plugin. Is that a possible explanation?

M.

Edit: This site really messes up when you repeat-post...m:(

Well ping inferno.demonoid.com worked a few days ago but now it does a loopback. And I don't have any blacklisting plugins (whatever those are) installed.

Maybe, but there are people at Fubra who don't have accounts here. When the server started acting weird a couple of weeks ago, he made an account and Admin'd himself.

Nice ... but deimos says : “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help,"

i hope that demonoid backs.

I don't know how you can ping http://inferno.demonoid.com as it on my computer replies

Ping request could not find host http://inferno.demonoid.com. Please check the n
ame and try again.

anyway it is not hard to update the entry in DNS to point to the loopback address. and reasons for doing it would be to avoid hammering on the real ip address.

According to an admin's post on subdemon the database was kept in tact so if the little green fella ever returns not only will you have your account, but also your ratio
