Happy Valentines Day... from Maxxuss.

The hacking guru has announced preliminary patches for Apple's latest release of OS X for Intel, version 10.4.4. According to his website,

This is a preliminary release of my Patch Solution for the official Mac OS X on the Intel platform. Ultimately, it would allow you to run this Mac OS X release on a generic x86 computer (SSE2 required).

There's still a lot of work and documentation to do, like support for SSE2-only CPUs, a proper installation procedure and a PPF patch. However, if you like to play around, this will get you started.

The significance of this event can’t be overstated. While many users were able to run OSx86 on their PCs last summer, the general feeling was that Apple hadn’t implemented their final security solution. That much was true.

Onlookers have told us that the 10.4.4 is a serious step forward in security, utilizing many of the same technologies as the 10.4.1 and 10.4.3, as well as the obfuscated code that Apple filed a patent for a few months ago.Few expected this final version – or at least the version that shipped with the first Macintels – to be easy to hack.

What this means is that Apple’s best attempts to secure their OS have, ultimately, failed. For its best efforts, the company is unable to lock OS X to their hardware. Without doubt, this will have profound impacts on the company’s future as running OSx86 on a PC becomes less a hacker’s trick and more mainstream. When all it requires is the downloading of a DVD, that’s certainly the future we’re looking at.

This also opens a host of new questions for Apple, OS X, and the PC users who love it. Will this mark the beginning of Apple’s legal endeavors to keep OS X locked down? Will it persuade Steve Jobs that releasing his OS is an insanely great idea?

Time will tell. Things keep getting more exciting. Stay Tuned.

Super. Looking forward to trying out 10.4.4. Waiting for my TargetPC with i915G motherboard.

Have 10.4.3 running smoothly on my Laptop, but it looks like you need an extra partition for 10.4.4, not willing to trash my XP partition for 10.4.4 just quite yet, but I was tempted.

Cheers,

I've searched in the forums, but I could not find an answear to my problem : I've followed instructions from the site whitch can't be linked, but I am still getting the same "Illegal instruction" message when I try to use kextcache.

I've tried using mach_kernel.all and a personnally patched kernel, butit does not work.

I've recent pentium m with unbroken PAE, but no SSE3...

EDIT : my mistake... I used incorect syntax in my boot options. Now, it -almost- works. I am still getting a cpu panic at 019C352...

Bah!

Another dual layer disc down.

It just won't boot to it. I get into OSX and it autoruns no problem. I can click the installer and it tells me to reboot and keeps bringing be back to the desktop - it never starts the install. Bummer.

I had a problem with the install too, it would start but quit after a few secound. Its a minor error in Maxxuss directions in STEP 6 the <string> should have 5 x (../) and not 4, for me thats where the problem was. Hope this helps

Just installed. Very fast. More responsive than 10.4.3 and tearing is noticeably better (for me at least.)

I have sound, but no internet. Which old kext from 10.4.3 do I need to move into 10.4.4 to get networking working again? Hmmm...

BTW, I now have a useless 3gb partition with 10.4.3. No instructions on how to get rid of it. Bah... I guess if worst comes to worst, I'll install 10.4.3 to vmware and install 10.4.4 onto the physical hdd all over again.

For some reason it said "you need 15.5gb to install os x." so I had to go to each package one by one and install.. ugh

acrroding to Mac Rumors, "the MacBook Pro already ships with Mac OS X 10.4.5 DVDs". we cant keep reinstalling the entire system every time apple releases an update, there must be a way to upgrade the system for us, the question is how

There is a download of the 10.4.5 update as a single file on the apple homepage. We (maxxuss...) must just patch the installer and apply it.

Whats that for ?

I am a little bit idiot...

munky

Posted

it creates you a bootable DVD image (ready to burn) which will let you install 10.4.4 clean.

i can confirm it works, at least for upgrading a 10.4.3 install. :D

snackole

Posted

I second that notion! :D

Jeezoflip

Posted

Does that make it bootable on regular x86 machines?

snackole

Posted

If you mean a new Intel based Macintosh the answer is no.

Jeezoflip

Posted

no, i mean like, on a regular intel machine, like a windows pc.

R. Bear Helms

Posted

Yes. The creation of the bootable DVD needs a working OS X 10.4.3 (or later) mac or PC it doesn't matter. The product, the patched DVD itself, is for a PC, one with or without any OS X installed.

Prep a hard drive for OS X installation under Windows? See the Technical FAQ on the Wiki (link at top of the forum).

Odd.

I built the disc and everything, installed without errors.

Then the system reboots and gives me a b0 error.

I have no luck here, but my hardware is mint. No probs with 10.4.3 with 100% hardware compatibility.
