Microsoft released Windows Vista SP1 to their download center today and claim that it should appear through Windows Update shortly.

x86 (standalone download)

x64 (standalone download)

I use Vista for gaming, so I'm honestly pretty excited about this being out. No more '300 years remaining' when I throw things onto the mybook through Windows :cards:

i have seen some tests in magazines, the result was no improvement in fps games at ALL.

There 're some improvements in the aero's theme performance indeed,

but such indistinguishable improvements. don't really matters a bit...

The Aero improvements were quite dramatic for me.

Still can't stand Vista, but I'll I'll keep it around since UT3 for OS X is dragging on due to politics/licensing issues.

I find Vista quite usable, it certainly used up more RAM that I would have expected, probably going to upgrade to 4GB or 8GB soon. Like Headrush, Aero seems much faster, and for me bootup is also much faster. If you have Vista and plan on keeping it, SP1 is worth installing.

Did you read that review that said Vista SP1 was 86% faster than original Vista in some file transfer processes?

Yes but I have to ask why the hell does Windows download files to a temporary location and once download is complete copy the file to your chosen download location?

This always bothered me about Windows and I've never really heard a believable answer as to why it does this instead of a simple move.

Have to agree with you on that one, the Temp folder becomes a monster

i think meowy hit it on the rail... sp1 for vista is primarily meant to help in the major flaws of vista and terrible response to many chores, i think fps was not the major priority (unlike for some of us). and yes, a many of those problems might have be resolved but i believe that mountain is the K2 and redmond shouldn't stop until on the "other" side of the mountain. I too find vista pretty usable and all my drivers are vista x86 and x64 compliant other that my MICROSOFT fingerprint reader (no x64). but every morning i see myself starting up mac os x more and more ^_^

I just installed SP1 today on two of our Vista Business machines, and I noticed Aero responded much more efficiently than before. File transfer across out network increased by about 50%, which was fantastic.

I am really impressed by Microsoft on this one. They didn't pull any punches in fixing Vista, and my hat goes off to them. I hope they keep this up from now on, and that Windows 7 doesn't face the same shortcoming's as ista did.

macgirl,

You can download the standalone updater packages from the links erei33 posted. It may not be showing up in Windows Update because SP1 requires 3 updates to be installed as a prerequisite. So if you insist on using Windows Update, install all the updates that are there at the moment and then SP1 should show up as well:)

Hope this helps :P

Regard to the dramatic change of copying files between two different locations, can be network .. that's due to the vista's default setting to check the difference of two locations before copying, your copy speed will sure to be improved a lot if that options is switched off .. what the hell do we need that functions if we're copying file locally ....

do anyone remember there's a program that allow windows make use of full cache of hardisk as to improve disk copying performance ? that one is fantastic ..!

thanks ~pcwiz, I did try the standalone before trying windows update, but it reported that the SP cound't be installed, searching for reason I found this:

EDIT:

I could update the Finger Scanner driver, SP1 did not appear even after reboot, I tried again the standalone without success but then it appeared in the windows update as 65 MB, ran it but again it failed.

Damn SP1 is awfully slow, see, I posted the first part of the message at 11:32 then 3 hours later 2 failed installs of SP1, sheesh

Installed it on a family friend's computer earlier today... my goodness it takes a while to install, even on modern PCs. It was a ~66MB download and took a good 45-60mins to install.

I think MS need to take a leaf out of Apple's book with update install times...

So far everything post installation is great. Aero windows respond more quickly, most notably when pressing win-key+ e. File transfering is a lot faster. I used to get a bug with digital cameras and such when I was copying that would say 'the source file has changed' or something to that effect, this bug is fixed too.

Hats off to Microsoft, they've done a good job.

Have you checked this out:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366

Try everything it says on there. And try updating ALL your drivers. Meaning install EVERYTHING that Windows Update lists there.

Been there done that.

Well SP1 is the only update listed on WindowsUpdate.

I will try a separate new install without those "conflicting" drivers and see what happens if I run the installer

I can just confirm MacGirl, on my Dell XPS M1330 it fails to update. Both from WU and standalone. For every reinstall it does find another new update to install, but still fails. Maybe after 15 reinstalls it will succeed :/

I will uninstall all drivers. This is very bad move from MS. I can just imagine how it will be for all unexperienced folks around. And all corporations who have automatic update to on. Because the update does take 30-40 minutes for the automatic install and uninstall. And there is no sensible log stating why it fails. Not that I have found.
