Anyone managed to get reboot/shutdown working with a p35-ds3 motherboard and a 10.5.1 vanilla kernel? The AppleACPI thing killled my install.

*edit*

Apparently the problem was with the caches. I redid everything and found the same problem, but I realized that if I booted with -f everything worked. So I deleted all the contents of my Caches folders and Extensions.mkext and everything seems to work now.

I still get "_CFGetHostUUIDString: unable to determine UUID for host. Error: 35" all over the place in my console though.

Yea you must clear out the chaches when messing with kexts. And I get that as well

Mine works when it feels like it, seriously, when I hit shutdown or restart sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

It's baffling, I wish it could make up it's mind.

lol it has a mind of its own. It has been working mostly lately...

Social Swimmer, Thank you for your reply.

First I booted from a DVD install and created an image of my already running Leopard 10.5.1 using disk utility.

Then after installing Efi 8 on an external GUID formatted USB drive I restore the image to the USB drive, again using disk utility.

I didn't want transfer the Efi 8 GUID install on any of my internal drive IDE or SATA before knowing it'll run or not.

I decided to clone an existing Leopard rather a fresh install since I have information on my address book, iCal, bookmarks which I didn't have to go through inputting it again.

If you meant waiting to see whether I'll get pass the Apple Logo gray screen, then I probably waited around 4 to 5 minutes.

My MBR install boots to the desktop in about a minute or even less. it's faster than my Windows XP. ;)

Another funny thing, for a while, in Safe Mode I could change my monitor resolution to 1600 x 1200 when i thought it would disable certain extensions. Then after a third reboot into Safe Mode the resolution shows only one option.

Again thank you for helping out.

EDIT: ah also, on the waiting question. I usually look at the blinking light on my external drive to see whether it was accessing the disk or not. Unlike my MBR drive which would blink profusely when rebooting, on the GUID install there was an ample time where the external drive wasn't being access and that's when I decided it wasn't going to make it.

Booting into Safe Mode also shows that the disk was being access just like when I normally boot the MBR drive.

hm. Can you try reinstalling efi? Just do the patch again. Soon I will look into this more, but I think the efi part may help.

After searching and searching for a Motherboard for the last 6 days I found other like minded people and will be getting my GA-P35-DS3P (rev. 2.1) tomorrow, altho they are having some shipping issues here in Thailand from Singapore so that may be delayed :P

Started off looking at X38 boards, then looked deeper and realized they would be to expensive to fully enjoy and thru this search I found my way to the P35 chip and after looking at offerings from Asus and Gigabyte, the GA-P35-DS3P (rev. 2.1) is clearly a great choice.

I have Kalaway running on an old Alienware right now, not vanilla, EFI, GUID, but its really slow so am going to build this box over the next week as parts roll in. Am going to read this thread and practice as much as I can on my Alienware but after seeing this thread, I felt more comfortable making my choice. I hope I can be of help to everyone as much as social swimmer and thanks social ... if it was not for this thread, i would still be mentally masturbating over which board to get, not sleeping well, and getting angry looks from my girlfriend (who was so cool for spending 3 hours with me today at the IT mall here in Bangkok).

In regards to CPU and Memory, do you guys think there is any advantage to getting >800 Memory? I can snag 8GB 800 Geil Memory pretty cheap, but 4GB 1000 Geil is the same price as the 8GB.

The CPU... 45NM Dual vs. Quad?

I'm on the fence

thanks for any feedback.. i want a screaming machine!!!

Quad core 45nm isn't out yet. I would personally go with Dual, but it depends on your income...

I would get the 4GB. Then you can overclock your cpu without overclocking RAM, which means faster timings which equals faster memory :D. Plus there is a rumor of problems with more than 4GB of ram on this mobo.

Where is that Rumor at? I have been googling for a while now with no luck as I have to make my purchase today on the board. I want to run multiple VMs on this box and need the RAM and CPU power.

I can get the 45NM here in Thailand this friday, Quad or Dual Core. I may get the E8400, is a nice processor, but I'm drooling over a Quad, so we shall see.

Thanks!

that rumor was found in a random (obscure) thread about this board, and I PMed another member who agreed with it, though he himself had never tried it. I would like to try out more RAM just to see but I'm not going to buy RAM just to prove a point.

To be honest, I am skeptical of its truth.

I don't know how many SATA ports work, as I have only tried two. However, I would say that probably all of them work as people have posted that they have gotten all of them working on other GA P35-DS3x boards, and its a fairly common chipset.

Lol I had to clean up my desk after reading the new Penryn reviews...

Tried that, still no cigar. Although I don't think Efi is the problem since it boots into Safe Mode just fine. So I'm guessing something that Safe Mode doesn't load that's maybe causing the problem when booted normally. But I can't find any specific information that list the processes between Safe Mode and normal boot.

Thanks.

RAM:

I will be most likely getting 8GB of DDR2 1066, so we will find out within two weeks what the truth is.

SATA:

All ports work, not sure about eSata, but again, I will probably be in a position to test all

CPU:

My local vendor here in Thailand can get me the 45nm Quad in about 10 days Q9450 or the Dual E8400. I will be getting one or the other. Prob the Dual for now, then upgrade in 6 -10 months when the price comes down on the QUads and i'm ready for a push.

Hoping all this homework pays off!

this is what Thai looks like!

ummm... has anyone tried the latest Kalaway Disk to do their install? Just pop her in, choose your options (EFI, GUID, Vanilla, etc) and click install?

It worked so well on my Alienware, I wonder how it will run on new build?

As well, having some hard time downloading the patch files required in the how to guide, but will try again later...does anyone have a mirror?

Ok. What is your exact system specs? What did you use to install?

That points to something outside the kernel, like kernel extensions. Maybe your system is slightly different, and that is causing a problem (I'm sure its fixable).

That should work. Others have used kalyway, but I didn't. Just make sure you pick the correct drivers.

That ram is (almost) exactly what I have and will definitely work. Everything else will work fine. I have no experience with that video card, but many others have it working fully. When 10.5.2 comes out it will be even better.

You can read reviews on dvd drives (Tom's Hardware guide is good). I got:

Sony NEC Optiarc 18X DVD±R DVD Burner with 12X DVD-RAM Write Black SATA Model AD-7170S-0B

after reading many reviews.

That is a different MOBO than the one we are using. The "E" Dig around on the net for benchmarks, the new 45nm E is outperforming the older Klarksdale. If you can find faster memory, that would be great. Try EVO ONE 1066Good Luck

Interesting,

Comparing the specifications, they both have the same chipsets, the only real tangible difference I see is the FSB capability of the EP35.

It would seem as if it should work, I guess I will give it a shot and if it does not work it will go back to Newegg. I wonder why newegg doesnt have any "new" p35's?

I also changed my optical drive to the Sony/Optiarc one. At the moment I am also going with the E6750 and will upgrade when chip prices come down a bit.

:D

I can not comment, but I have seen people have luck with one flavor of motherboard, but then have issues with the same one that has an extra letter in its model number.

They prob dont have any new ones since its a little older maybe?

Yea, i hear ya on the CPU, its going to be at least 12 months till i can afford to get a decent CPU for this board...

most P35-DS3* can have the "energey saving" stuff the EP35 has with a simple update (which I think is what the E stands for) :

http://www.gigabyte.co.nz/FileList/WebPage...ree-upgrade.htm

not so sure about whether or not you can have the higher fsb/memory (1600/1200) too with that update

I just bought a new pc with a EP35-DS3R from ncix, I should get it next monday and install osx + vista, I'll probably have come back around!

Go with your second thought.... You will start running out of FSB headroom trying to OC a 1333FSB chip, but if you set the FSB of the Q6600 to 1333 you will get 3.0GHz & 2 extra cores....

HD 160G might be a bit too small for me...

I have asked the shop here in Japan, the difference between P35 and EP35 is the time it was release

and the bios. EP35 need not update to run 45mn cpu, ether than that all parts are same as the REV.

Is anyone one of us running 4 or more GB of dual channel ram in our boards? I read some reports about problems with GA-P35 based boards not booting with dual channel 4GB of ram, the exact config I was going to buy... I'm about to buy all my parts, and I want to make sure I can install 4GB to start and 8GB in a few months

thanks!!

All the GA P35 boards that I have heard of work great (GA P35©- DS3(4)L/R/P etc) So the E should be fine.

4GB with dual channel works, but has been causing random crashes when ram usage goes over 2GB. I currently have mine limited to 2GB, while I wait for time to troubleshoot it (using source code) myself. Here is a thread where we have been discussing it: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=82546

suposedly more than 4GB won't boot but this is unconfirmed (confirmation pending by another in this thread)

Is it possible to do this tutorial with a 10.5.1 retail DVD?

I can't find somthing about it.

Because I have a new 10.5.1 DVD with my iMac and not a 10.5... I would like to use the 10.5.1 DVD to install OS X on my pc. :)

I have used the search engine, but I haven't found something.

Yes you can. Once you are completely done though, download the 10.5.1 update from apple and run it. That way, the old kernel and stuff gets replaced.

good luck and post your results!

Hi,

now i patched the DVD. But when I try to boot from the cd I get an Error like this: Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\"...

Thats all. I can't boot from the DVD.

The patch should be correct. But I don't have this driver...

Can some one help me?

that means that the patch failed. Go through it a few more times, and make sure it works right. You can try researching the "patching" process of the brazilmac method.

do you mind posting the terminal output from the patching process?

But at first I must reinstall kalyway oder upchuk.

Uh I know, it crashed at DOTTING....

So the file size of the new dmg is like yours (in the tutorial), but at the point where it says DOTTING.. it crahsed becouse my USB Device with the original iso makes some stupid errors.

Thanks for your help social swimmer!
