yup i did figure out my random lock ups. its the dual core thing, i guess the golden patch is not working really. when i turn off a core it runs fine with intensive apps like logic studio 8, etc. I guess we will have to wait for a decent kernel patch for 680i

Hi there!

I'm new at Hackintosh and i want to install the leopard on my system:

p5n-e Sli

Intel E2160

2G ram

xfx 8600 XXX

80G ide Hard disk

I've tried to install folowing this tutorial from LifeHacker http://lifehacker.com/348653/install-os-x-...acking-required

The problem is that my bios (V.0806) doesn't have all the settings like the one from the tutorial.

When i'm booting the system from the DVD (BTW, i'm using the same version as used in the tutorial: Kalyway Leopard 10.5.1 SSE2 SSE3) appears this:

dscf9680vv9.jpg

Following some instructions from here I've already dissabled almost everything on the bios (sata, lan, 1394 controller)

Need help thanks!

You need to boot with "-x -v" and if that doesn't work, boot with "-x -v cpus=1". That should get you into the installer.

Hi Everyone ! First post in this forum !

I been trying to install Kalyway Leo 10.5.1 with no success. I try the flags -x -v, but nothing, i was getting kernel panic, reboots, etc. But today i try -legacy cpus=1 and the installer screen appears, but now the problem is that the instalation doesnt recongnize the keyboard or the mouse, both are ps/2.

I cant select the language of the instalation ! :( I also disable one core in the bios.

My specs are :

core 2 duo e6400

Ecs Pn2 sli (nvidia 680i chipset)

1GB ddr2

geforce 7600 gt

ide hard drive

ide dvd reader

all sata and raid disabled

any one have the same problem??

Thanks a lot and sorry my bad english :(

Maybe try a usb mouse, or try one at a time. Just KB, or just ps2 mouse... I'd seriously try a usb mouse with a ps2 kb, I'm using that setup with no problems.

How many people even have tried HPET enabled in their BIOS? I am running an Asus P5N32E-SLi MB and have the HPET support disabled. I didn't even know what this was until I started researching why I have to run cpus=1 with the newer kernels... .Netroller you mention that nvidia is not following the spec on HPET, so I imagine that it has already been looked in to... But since I know I have HPET disabled in my BIOS, I was thinking (outloud) that when I get home I would try enabling it in the BIOS and seeing how it acts with the 9.1 (or 9.2 by that time) kernels and not passing cpus=1. Seriously it defintely won't work if I have it disabled :P

arg! nevermind, I just reread .Netrollers post.

You need to boot with "-x -v" and if that doesn't work, boot with "-x -v cpus=1". That should get you into the installer.

Thanks, whit "-x -v cpus=1" I managed to "install" the leopard whit the same configs as used in the tutorial that I refered ...

dscf9683qh9.jpg

BUT whet it reboots, appears this screen...

dscf9693xl8.jpg

If I let the counter end, it loads some kernel for about half a second and then reboots again =X

If I press any key appears this one...

dscf9691ol6.jpg

If I choose option 1 (hd(0,1)) reboots

If I choose option 2 (hd(0,2) Leopard) it loads some kernel and reboots =X =X =X =X

I'm close, but I need some more help, Thanks!

I just typed this out for another user, it should work 100% for you as well, since he was having a similar problem.

Ok, so the first step is installing Macdrive. Reboot your PC once you install it, so it can detect the mac harddrive.

Once macdrive sees the harddrive and lets you open it and modify files (if needed) you are ready for step two.

You need to download this file... http://tinyurl.com/2h4vt6. That is the newest ToH kernel that I know of (which will let your system boot).

Extract the rar onto your desktop.

Open the mac harddrive (in My Computer) and there should be a file called mach_toh or something similar, and then vanilla and maybe a "mach_kernel". You need to rename the kernel from the rar file (it is named mach_sleep) and change it to mach_kernel, then copy it to the root directory of the macdrive (where the mach file and vanilla files are).

Now all you have to do is reboot :) just remember to boot with -v cpus=1. That should get you into the installer. If once you boot the installer it keeps looping back to the keyboard setup page (you'll know what i mean if it happens) reboot and use the flags -v cpus=1 "Graphics Mode"="1280x1024x32". That should get you past the looping problem. Also, you can change 1280x1024 to whatever the max resolution of your monitor is. For example, mine is 1600x1200x32, just don't forget the quotes, otherwise it'll give you a kernel panic.

Hopefully that isn't too confusing. But it should get you booting correctly :)

Now freezes while load's the kernel =( sorry to bother you once again

try to fix permission of the kernel,

boot with flag -s ,

> /sbin/mount -uw /

> chown root:wheel mach_kernel

> chmod 644 mach_kernel

> reboot

if you can't boot with -s, try to use your install dvd.

alternative, golden kernel.

i have a topic with my experience on my 680i chipset asus mobo, i have kernels for 10.4.10 and 11 tiger, and 10.5.0 and 10.5.1 kernels for leo... and some experience and thoughts on this mobo, u can take a look at it if u want...

at least for the kernels... to get rid of cpus=1

i have quad core, and got rid of cpus=1 on tiger installs however trouble is with leo kernels, (at least on c2q cpus, bcoz c2d s boot fine with thos kernels but c2q dont like it for some reason maybe just my mobo...)

good luck...

this is the topic btw...

I tried this...

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=81411

and got all 4 or my cores working. Geekbench score went from just over 2,000 to 6,200 !

Major drawback is that trying to connect to the internet causes instant lock-up, so now I'm back to 1 core until I can figure out a fix. Any ideas?

UPDATE:

I disabled HPET in bios and now all 4 cores work and so does the internet using the Golden kernel :( Not sure of the science behind it but it works!

would be nice to have feedback in the topic so that others with same problem can benefit the info as well... :)

good luck...

@JollyRogers: You can enable HPET, but it won't help. Vanilla kernels don't just require HPET, they require an Intel-specific implementation of HPET. (However, if someone implements nVidia's HPET in a Hackintosh kernel, enabling HPET will allow that kernel to use it instead of the less-reliable LAPIC timer. AFAIK no current kernel supports nvHPET, maybe that's why the new scheduler doesn't work well. Possibly the proper fix for the cpus=1 and the network hang problems would be using nvHPET.)

Yeah, most of what you said is beyond my knowledge ;) But I know when I disable HPET I can boot with both cores with the golden kernel, but I still can't boot the vanilla kernel. So if the proper fix is nvHPET, where do we go about finding that? Like you said, it doesn't exist yet (most likely). So are we going to have to wait for Apple to impliment nvHPET?

Hi Everyone ! It's me again. Still having some trouble with Kalyway leo 10.5.1.

I has having the same trouble that Shallow_man but i could reach to the keyboard language selection.

The problem now is the keyboard setup loop, that eleazar says.

I tryed with

-v -x -legacy cpus=1

-v cpus=1 "Graphics Mode"="1024x768x32"

-v -x cpus=1 "Graphics Mode"="1024x768x32"

-v cpus=1 -Graphics Mode="1024x768x32"

1024x768x32 it's the max resolution of my monitor. This is a problem?

but all of this flags return a kernel panic or the keyboard setup loop. The far i can reach is when the setup ask to transfer the old settings from another mac. I recall my specs:

intel core 2 duo e6400

Ecs Pn2-sli (nforce 680i)

1gb ram ddr

geforce 7600gt

ide 80GB disk

ide dvd player

ps/2 keyboard (still undetected, only detected in startup)

usb mouse ( i managed to get to this point with the mouse)

any one can help me? thanks in advance !

Again, sorry the english. :D

+1 Success

Asus Striker Extreme

C2D

IDE HD

SATA Raid with XP/Vista

Nvidia 8800GT 512MB

Used Kalyway 10.5.1

nForceEthernetController.kext for onboard nic

AppleNForceATA.ketxt for sata

Nvidia Installer for 8800 GT

Thanks again for all the tips!

Thanks .Netroller. I don't have access to my machine for about a month because of work/travel, so I can't look into it other then researching things. I looked at the linux kernel and the nvHPET has been implemented as recent as 2.6.23 roughly... but I could find no references to patches for xnu. I did find a lot about patching nohpet back with xnu kernel 8.9.1 and was going over the thread that rufus and his team worked on, but can't actually locate the patches because there are no valid links. Some BIOS updates for our 680i boards mention HPET fixes, but don't get into what those fixes are... I would hope they where to fall into line with the intel specs! So I guess I could look into some of the linux implementations for nvHPET and see if I could somehow implement it into a xnu kernel... OR figure out how to disable hpet in the xnu kernel so it won't bomb and use acpi.

On another note, because of all the extra time I am getting while on travel I may just purchase a new Mac Pro ;) . I do know that I will never buy another nvidia board again, though I have been happy with it's performance irt to linux and windows/gaming.

Most likely just disabling HPET won't help. The new scheduler seems to require a timer more precise than LAPIC if the CPU is multithreaded (multicore or hyperthreaded). (When LAPIC was invented, noone thought of a quad-core CPU yet.) The main difference between Intel's HPET and nvHPET is that Intel's HPET has 2 different operating modes (32-bit and 64-bit mode) that are chosen by the BIOS (usually by the user in the BIOS setup), while nvHPET has only one mode in BIOS (so the options are "Enabled" and "Disabled", as opposed to "Disabled", "32-bit" and "64-bit"), and the actual operating mode is chosen by the OS. This mode selector is what the Golden kernel is missing (as it's unneeded for Intel's HPET), and due to this, it most likely picks the wrong mode on nVidia boards. (It might be worth checking if changing the HPET setting in BIOS and using the -legacy switch fixes our problems.)

there wouldnt be better explanation.... i regret million times getting an nforce mobo... wish i checked the HCL more carefully...

i hope u guys can implement nvHpet into the kernel, that way we can get rid of this {censored} cpus=1 and random lock ups and freezes...

HI Im new to this Forum ANd IM in the process of installing the TOH iso I got all the way to the Installation And with about 3 minutes left It had said installation has failed the oxforddictionaries pkg could not be validated or something is this due to a bad burn ?

Thanks

bad burn OR try moving your mouse every few minutes as your drive may be going into a sleep mode during the install... there is another argument you can pass to keep the drives from going to sleep also, I just can't remember what it is... You can find that by searching.
