The fastest I've seen an OS boot is OS 9 in Sheepshaver, which I stripped out to a bare minimum of a 25MB System folder, took 5 seconds from Happy Mac to Desktop. I wonder if a real Powerbook/Powermac would boot in like 1 second, since they say SS's performance is like 1/8 native.

Anyway, what's your fastest OS boot time, emulated is OK too as long as you're not using some sort of frame skipping/CPU overclocking hack?

SShaver Settings:

Window Mode 800x600

Refresh Rate: 60hz

Extensions: None

RAM: 40MB(bare minimum I found for no "low virtual memory" nag screen)

Disk Size: 26MB DMG file(wanted to see how small I could get it without complaining, etc.)

TinyXP rev05, which is a stripped version of XP, booted in like 8 seconds on VMWare fusion running on OS X. That was fast! OS X boots in about 25 sec on my PC, quite fast..

My dad told me when I was little, that macs don' have boot up times, you just switch them on and they're on ( don't know about that now...)

mac os 9.2-newInfinity.jpg never loaded

Mac OS X 10.4.3 on My AMD Rig 15 seconds, 10.4.10 17~20 seconds

Mac OS X 10.4.10 on my Dellintosh 20~25 seconds. Vista a loose the count get distracted after so much, but I think 2 mins.

But who cares for boot time, with my PowerBook I get instantly Mac OS just opening the display

DSL - Can't time it since my monitor searches for a signal and when it comes back on there it is. It's an LCD with dual inputs so that = fast. :(

Windows Vista first boot = Several minutes as the little dots reach the end of the screen then start a new row.

OS X - about 3-5 seconds from Kernel Version to Login.

My fedora web server running at 1Ghz with 256MB ram. Several Minutes. I judge from the time I press power to the time I can get onto it's web page.

Fastest boot? Just to be a bit of a {censored} here - About 0.3 seconds. DOS 6 in Parallels with the virtual hard drive image stored in a ram disk ;-) Should try playing those ancient clock-sensitive games on this beast, all you ever see is "game over"!

Don't ask me why I did that haha!!

Why do you really care about the boot time?

I just put all my Macs to sleep when I don't need them. That means I don't even need to start them up!

On average I do reboot my MacBook every two weeks or so. I remember there was once where my up timer said 2 months on my old 12" PowerBook!

I certainly care about boot times. Although I DO put my Macs to Sleep most times, if I leave town for a couple days I shutdown all my systems in case of power failure. So when I get back if I need to do something, I don't want to sit and wait forever for my machine to boot.

Wow, so I might have just realized that I'm incredibly impatient and a little lazy. :D
