I am a huge fan of the Gorillaz, and I found this quote from their book, Rise of the Ogre, (available in hardcover now in most countries), very, very interesting, and almost exactly how I felt about 9/11...

2D: I remember when I turned the TV on and saw that image: of the plane going into the first tower. It literally took the air out of my lungs. Just the impact in my head of understanding what I was seeing. A plane crashing into a tower...that tower. It just made me literally fall backwards. Just that moment of realization of, like, the full implications of what this meant. The atmosphere where we were wasn't dark, not even moody, just really odd...fragile. No one knew what was gonna happen next.

Russel: It felt like the world could explode any second. I think I slept twenty minutes that whole night...maybe an hour the next. A lot of terrible seeds were sown that day.

Noodle: It's the failure to see this planet as a single entity that causes so much pain so many times. You cannot attack one part of the world without it affecting the whole earth, the whole body. Attacking other cultures, other nations, is a self-destructive act. It always comes back on you in some way.

Reactions? Not really about Gorillaz but about the comments, and how you feel about 9/11 in general?

i remember that day, sitting in english/history class and some shouted...hey a plane just it the WTC, at that time wee all got up and ran to the back of the room and fired up the tv. man it was crazy, we were all worried but we were in ohio. not that much happens in ohio. other than that my story goes nowhere. we almost got out of school early that day but no go. wow that take me back 5 years now....im getting old.

I was in English class, the last period of the day. We were going over some grammar. Suddenly, about 5-10 fire trucks raced past the school with their sirens blasting. Somebody joked "I guess a chicken nugget caught on fire at Wendy's." The day resumed as usual and I didn't think anything of it. At the end of the day, there were the usual announcements over the P.A. However, they saved an unexpected one for last - "today the World Trade Center was hit by a terrorist attack." My heart sunk and I wondered what exactly the vague term "terrorist attack" really meant. As soon as the bell rang for dismissal, it was one giant race to try to find some info. A classmate whose mother worked in the pre-K division had told her that planes hit the Twin Towers and that they were demolished. This spread quickly among my friends. No matter how many times I heard the same news, it was impossible to imagine that two colossal structures could be reduced to rubble, along with thousands of lives, in the blink of an eye.

It was an odd day. I've read in history class about the Red Scare, about families gathering in fear of being bombed, and about the clouds of war affecting people from their homes. Never had I thought that this sort of fear could again reach American soil. My mom left work extremely early and my dad did also. The rest of the day was spent hinging on the every word of anchormen.

I was in little old primary school, Yr 6. But yet we still had a projector for the white board. We sat thier for most of the lesson watching the images. It was one of the most shocking days i think everyone has had. (while writing i had, The Fray, how to save life playing)

BaYlisS

My god do you all make me feel old! I remember I was working an IT director for a non-profit at the time. Someone called from the office to wake me up (had pulled an all nighter the night before). I turned on the TV and I just remember sitting and staring for hours. I had just been to the towers a few months before on a New York trip. I just remember thinking to myself how this was going to be the turning point, how America would rally and truly begin to realize this new world view. Unfortunately as history has proven now, such thing did not happen. Instead America regressed to a get them before they get you mentality only further isolating us from the rest of the world. Honestly if I could have just one petty wish granted it would be to quite literally spit in the face of George W. Bush.

ok, this is something thats been on my mind of late...

HOW did the US allow hijacked airliners to fly unimpeded across US airspace for nearly AN HOUR and do NOTHING to stop them?

why do defence companies spend millions investing in things like stealth bombers when, apparently, a common, everyday jumbo jet can be used as a weapon so effectively?

could they really have been that incompetent? if not, the only other possibility is that they were complicit. and thats a whole new level of scary.

1) Because the FAA screwed up big time. The official 9/11 report or whatever it's called agrees.

2) Because that's for known war. You can be more bold in a suprise attack.

3) Yes. They can be that incompetent.

Bah, not trying to sound insensitive or anything, But seriously, get over it, lots worse things have happened in the world.

The thing is, It happend, {censored} happens, and talking and asking questions about why it happened aint gonna change the fact that it happened

how many people died that day? about 4XXX something innocent people right? let's not talk about how many innocent people have been killed in Iraq since 2003 (it's a warzone anyway, right?) or how many died because of Katrina..

What really boggles my mind is that there is no problem to send thousands of troops and spend billions on a war (for the wrong reasons); but to organize to save people in your own country is somewhat impossible ...

and back to the WTC.. i visited the observatory deck not too long before it happened (well, a few months), and also saw the second plane enter the 2nd building live on CNN in my living room. I thought there were clearer motives at the time and told all my friends that this was the trigger for WW3! Thank god it was only a war against humanity! :laser:

i hope i didn't upset anyone...

cheers,

I'm not gonna lie, I was at home when I heard about it (Seattle). And it kinda felt no different to me than when I see a terrorist attack happen in Britain or Israel, I kinda shrugged my shoulders and went to school (I kinda see the east coast as a different country than the west coast). Also, I tried not to give too much notice to it seeing as the rest of the world has to deal with this every day...thats why I totally agree that our problems stem from not seeing the world as one entity.

Totally agree with killbot I'm afraid. Seems to me this current administration has decided terrorism is the new communism, and that it was invented on the 11th of September. All the problems we had in the 70s with an epidemic of palestinian plane hijackings, the Blitz that we Brits had to endure, Lockerby - in fact every hijacking, shooting or bombing we've had in the past did not provoke the same kind of reaction.

It was very interesting to look at the differences between public reaction to the London bombings and 9/11.

While you have an interesting point, your final statement dilutes your arguement. One killed people in the tens and hundereds, the other killed people in the thousands. The difference in number there will definately change how people react emotionally. One large enough to get people to rally behind fierce action, the other, not so much.

One cant really use that argument if one looks at the number of people total who have died in Iraq...a lot more than a few thousand.

Brilliant quote.

I don't know what that imagery shows the rest of you but to me at least it shows our weakness as humans. Great civilisations have gone to rubble, and ours is no different. We need to be careful we don't take actions that will lead to us only being remembered from history books.

I really don't get this. Ok it's considered impossible but you just saw 1 plane hit the twin tower. Shouldn't you then grab some coffee and take some quick actions to prevent another instead of reading books to little children and wasting like an hour (I think).

I don’t' want to sound insensitive either but Americans are getting a habit of bringing this (fairly old) issue up over and over again. It's horrific what happened but the world (Americans in particular for obvious reasons) needs to move on and look to the future. I know one of the main reasons it's hard for them to let go (even if they wanted to) if because they are reminded of it every day. I honestly wonder how many years will have to go past until it's treated like all other American disasters.

I was fairly young when it happened and I got to say although I didn't know exactly what happened that day, I did feel sorry for America. I didn't even know what the twin towers were when I heard the news but I knew whatever had happened, many people had died. It was only hours later that I began to fully see the full picture. Although the attack didn't shake my world, I did remain feeling a lot of sympathy for the lost lives for months to come.

It was very interesting to look at the differences between public reaction to the London bombings and 9/11.

I live in London and like many people in the UK I was worried about my friends and family. But was I breaking down crying ever second? No. I'm not saying what happened wasn't a horrifying incident (because it was). The tubes and busses I get on every day were hit. I or my family could have very easily been in any of them (it's a little harder to be in the WTC or the planes that hit the WTC). But me breaking down doesn't help the situation.

That day I basically made sure everyone I knew was safe and then sat at home and watched the news. I would have gone out if I could but the transport system had completely shut down. I more or less continued using the public transport as soon as it was possible (which was the next day I think). I didn't want to sit at home worrying about what could happen. And I’m extremely proud (I can't emphasise this enough) to know that most Londoners did exactly the same. And a year on... everything was a normal as ever. Yes there was a remembrance but we continued with what was necessary.

Also I hate our London Ken Livingston for putting our transport faires up each and ever year like we're made of money. But he made a public speech a week after the 7/7 bombing and I have to say I felt he understood us (our pains, hope and dreams... what makes us great) that day than any politician could. When a mayor cryes in public in front of millions, you know he truly feels what you feel. For that reason and that reason alone I would vote for him over and over again. I didn't feel anything of the sort from Tony Blair. This is a small Youtuebe video I found of that day

Lets face it, the world is no safer now than it was when then. In fact it's more dangerous because of Iraq and everything else. We know you might be hit again and again and so might we again and again. But keeping that in your mind all the time and holding onto something that happened a while ago is only going to stop us living.

Basically, you will die when you die. Life’s too short to worry about it.

(I'm sorry if I’ve taken this off topic)

HOW did the US allow hijacked airliners to fly unimpeded across US airspace for nearly AN HOUR and do NOTHING to stop them?

It is funny (scary) how many people actually believe this.

There is all kinds of evidence that Flight 93 was shot down.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9/11_conspira...lines_Flight_93

Rumsfield was even caught admitting it:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/12/27/rumsfeld.flt93/

http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=42112

Yet, the US government (and Hollywood) gets away with fabricating this ridiculous story about "hero" passengers making cell phone calls while fighting off the "terrorists":

Come on people, say it with me:

prop - pa - gand -da

i was still in elementary school, and i think the teachers found out, but they didnt tell us

so i came home and my dads car was in the driveway (he usually isnt home by then), and when i walked in the door my parents told me what happened

i didnt know what to say, so i said something stupid like "thats too bad, i really wanted to go see them again" (we had seen them a few years before)

but i was really upset that someone would do something like that no so far away from me

i live in new york, not new york city, but i go there a lot, and i just love it

to think some people could be so heartless and horrible makes me sick

ive visited the site a few times, and seen almost every 9/11 documentary there is, because i dont want to be ignorant to the event

i have a friend who lives in a new jersey town not far from nyc, and many, many, fathers and mothers of children in that town were killed that day, because many commuted to the wtc

bofors: fwiw, I do beleive that flight 93 was shot down. what i dont get is how the other THREE planes managed to make it to their targets.

i read some stuff about rumsfeld changing the standing shoot-down order a few months earlier, then on the day nobody being able to get him on the phone to ok the shootdowns. if anyone has any details about this, i'd love to hear them.

If you are wondering why the other three planes were not shot down, it is simply because this has never been done before. Hijackings were always resolved in some kind of a standoff on a runway or tarmak somewhere, not in the air. The first three planes hit their targets within a few minutes of each other, it took that long for the US command to figure what was going on, to make a decision to take down the final the plane and halt air traffic.

This sounds like BS, lies spun to cover Rumsfield.

The other thing, I can tell you is that the US government itself actively spreads some of the more wild-ass "conspiracy theories" out there. This is known as "disinformation", it is a well established tactic in "psychological" warfare and political operations. It makes anyone who suggests any kind of reasonable 9/11 "conspiracy", like that Flight 93 was shot down, look like crazy to most people. It helps cover-up the real "conspiracies".

Now what about that anthrax?

Have you seen this: http://www.jewsdidwtc.com/

(make sure you check out their "theories", "proof" and of course, the "fan art" page... ;) )

One of the interesing things about the "Jewish 9/11" conspiracy theory is that the idea is commonly accepted in the Muslim world (for obvious reasons). So, here is an example of essentially the same "information" serving two distinct political purposes by opposing parties, "disinformation" in the case of helping covering up the real conspiracies in the West and "misinformation" (or perhaps just propaganda) in the Muslim world.

lol thanks for the info on psyops, but beleive me im well-versed.

Well I aint. So both of you... give us everything you have. Whether I believe it or not is another thing but it doesn't stop it being interesting reading.

bofors I don't know if the jews did 9/11 or not. But i'm not sure what you believe.

What's the "magic" word? :thumbsup_anim:

Well, it is pretty hard to argue with the "Cubic Time" theory:
