themonarc
A few questions I have before i decide to jump in and purchase a used Surface Pro... 1. Is there any support for the Type/Touch Cover? That would be important if I were to use it to type documents/emails... 2. Are the commercial Touch Base drivers really a necessity? $100 is a little steep for a product that seems to be in its early stages... (But I'm sure a lot of hard work was put into it either way) 3. Are iCloud, App Store, and Messages/FaceTime all 100% functional? I couldn't find any direct answers in the posts I looked at, so sorry if they've already been answered somewhere. Thanks for the help Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/292645-guide-surfacepro-1-2-osx-android-windows-multiboot/page/63/#findComment-2018157 Share on other sites
munakib
1. Type Covers are full supported (I am sure touch covers will be too): That is how you will setup/install the whole OS - I am using TypeCover 2 with backlit controls which are also fully functional 2. Touchbase drivers are an excellent extension - use the free trial version till you are confident with it, and the group purchase is 60$ - so if you feel fully comfortable with OSX on your SP only then make the purchase. 3. iCloud/iMessage/AppStore are 100% fully functional, find my guide on the Tablets/Microsoft section A few questions I have before i decide to jump in and purchase a used Surface Pro... 1. Thanks for the help download clover cofigurator, it should allow you access to the hidden EFI drive - inside it you will find your config file which you can copy and manually edit using textedit and finally replace the original with your modded version. Just google which parts of it you need to change in order to resolve your particular issue. So for some reason my Windows 8 partition is still there but does not show up on clover boot screen anymore. I have no idea what I did. How can I edit clover so that it displays the windows 7 partition again? I cannot figure it out. I hope I dont have to reinstall windows 8 again. futaris
I couldn't get Facetime or Messages (iMessage) to work. Appstore is fine. I created a new icloud account from the surface pro running 10.9.2. There is no recovery partition and the wifi drivers don't work, so the "find my mac" doesn't work. Incidentally, if you have a USB Wifi, then you should be able to use Create-Recovery-Partition-Installer 1.1 or Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 to enable Find My Mac. munakib
Hi Futaris, So Facetime/iMessage is not working with your new icloud account? Can you try signing out of your other idevices and then just using your old apple id on SP first? I couldn't get Facetime or Messages (iMessage) to work. Appstore is fine. After you installed windows you should notice that you can only boot windows 8 (or OSX). Thats normal for now. Boot from the OS X Clover usb again. (If you cant boot from usb and it goes to windows automaticly, just reset youre pc, as soon as it shows bios loading, reset it again, and then select usb as boot device) Select youre os x partition, hit spacebar, and choose with injected kext. Mount the main EFI with Clover configurator; Open the main EFI file drive on the desktop, browse to EFI/Clover and copy CLOVERX64.efi to /EFI/Mircosoft/Boot. In EFI/Microsoft/Boot rename the file bootmgrfw.efi to bootmgfw-orig.efi In EFI/Microsoft/Boot rename the file CLOVERX64.EFI to bootmgfw.efi Reboot without the Clover USB... caleidosCope
Yeah I saw this and started doing it before but.. I think I deleted the microsoft folder accidentally, so now not sure if I can recover it.. ? :-/ thinking... or you just did it??? ... looking at the structure...there are a lot of files... beside that bootmgr.efi I dont think it lost... try to repair it with an Win8.1 repair/installer. I think the installer could repair the EFI-Partition, if you are lucky it fixes just the Microsoft-folder of your clover-EFI (because its just THE EFI). Do yourself a favor get Clonezilla, a USB-Drive, a ExternalKeyboard and do a disk-backup BEFORE you try something... so you can restore to the point where you are right now. BRAHMAN
Hi Last year about September I saw a youtube video, seemingly by jahstories. Was about to get a new Macbook with haswell processor, then saw the video and made an incredibly ridiculous choice to get a suface pro. That was a very regrettable choice and that choice basically hassled productivity for many months. Wish the video had been more honest. Instead of making osx on the surface pro look like a cakewalk with no major issues, the video should have shown how many things weren't functioning properly. I also wish a more organized person would redo the sp guide (not sp2 guide) because it's way too messy. Anyway, after many months of the ridiculous surface pro and months of lost productivity, got all of it working....worked for days to get the right wifi drivers working and the avastarfwloader.kext working. Then....after a reboot the wifi driver and avastar fw loader and kexts seemingly stopped loading....then on another reboot later....randomly....started working again... WHY?!!!!!!! AND HOW DO I MAKE THESE KEXTS LOAD PROPERLY EVERY DAY?!!!!!! Seriously. The bluetooth nano, that worked before the avastarfwloader, doesn't work anymore either. I repaired permissions with du and kext util. Also rebuilt kext cache. I HAVE WORKED FOR SOOOOOOOO LONG TO GET THIS SYSTEM FUNCTIONAL, SO HOW DO I FORCE THE INSTALLED KEXTS TO LOAD EVERY DAY?!!!! Thanks in advance for a reliable solution!!!!! While I agree with you that the guide is in dire need of some house keeping(many have asked, would help mitigate some of the frequently asked questions on the thread) I think you jumped into this enthusiast project without really understanding what you were in for. There is no guarantee that this would work for anyone. The sole reason we are as far as we are, is because of the hard work of this great community. Many of the folks here have spent countless hours day and night testing and experimenting trying to get this machine, that was NEVER meant to run OS X, as stable as possible. Then they were nice enough to share that information hoping that it might help the next person taking on this project. I have a surface pro running about 95%. It's stable enough for me to use it in a live gig. I couldn't have done it without this thread and community. But in the end, I understood when I bought it that It was going to be a project. That there was going to be a lot of trail and error. And that is part of the experience. I am confident that if you put in the research time, you will succeed. If you can't or won't, I'm pretty sure someone in this forum will be glad to purchase your machine for a decent discount. If you needed a machine for work or something mission critical, why on earth would you purchase a machine that you need to hack??? Ps. While I assume you require OS X for your purpose, Your machine is still a fantastic windows machine in my opinion. In fact, it's changed my perception of what Microsoft is capable of both in hardware quality and software design. Yes there are some old windows skeletons still lurking around but overall this hardware/software package shows some great promise of what's to come from both Microsoft and Apple. I Believe in 5 or so years we will finally appreciate the impact that this product had on the industry. 2 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/292645-guide-surfacepro-1-2-osx-android-windows-multiboot/page/63/#findComment-2018405 Share on other sites

PLEASE FOLLOW THE THREAD RULES AND AVOID TO USE CAPLOCKS! THANKs and read the whole thread, answers are already there. BTW i agree with counter5th about the guide: Problem In Chair Not In Computer P.S. i don't understand what you wanted to do with your surfacepro... it's always a tablet. (i'm using it to videoedit with imovie or using Photoshop without any slowdown or problems) if you are experiencing problems with kexts, installing them with kextdrop should fix. if you wan't an "hassle free O.S." just leave the hackintosh community and use win8 or ubuntu aloha Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/292645-guide-surfacepro-1-2-osx-android-windows-multiboot/page/63/#findComment-2018427 Share on other sites
jape
OK, more research on this shows that neither the dock ethernet nor the avastar bt will enumerate for me when the SP 2 is in the dock. I need to remove the machine from the dock and let it sit for at least 30 seconds. Then power it on and cold boot it. The BT then works after about a 30 second wait, and the dock ethernet comes up as soon as you put the machine into the dock and slap the dock's ears together. Ok. Still not sure what's the reason it fails to enumerate USB devices during boot... BRAHMAN
Ummmm....problem is obviously in jahstories's chair then, as he apparently skimmed Counter5th's post too quickly. To quote counter5th: "While I agree with you that the guide is in dire need of some house keeping(many have asked, would help mitigate some of the frequently asked questions on the thread)" I design electronics products and have written software in multiple programming languages. I know osx better than most non-hackintosh power users and have done server administration professionally. I resided in palo alto last year and in shenzhen china (electronics central) now. To be honest, anyone evangelizing microsoft products on a hackintosh forum (where people seemingly go to masochistic lengths to avoid microsoft products) is ridiculously laughable. I would ROFL if it wasn't so incredibly horrible to have purchased a surface pro instead of a macbook air. So do tell instead of posting defensive unhelpful replies...HOW DO I GET THESE KEXTS TO LOAD PROPERLY ON EVERY BOOT?!!!!!! Thanks in advance and thanks to people like jape! Can you try signing out of your other idevices and then just using your old apple id on SP first? Don't have an old apple id or any other idevices. caleidosCope
... and always after hackintoshing, i know even "more" for my real-mac... i love this!!! In my case... my productivity-side is the Windows8 (One-Note, Creative-Suite {mini jobs}, Healing-Practitioner-Software, Word, Powerpoint)... my "hobby" is the OSX side (LogicPro10, GarageBand, Keynote, connetion to iCloud). BRAHMAN
PS: And yes I have refrained from lashing out after feeling duped by the misleading marketing hype of that youtube video. JahStories
@BRAHMAN misleading marketing hype? i'm not doing any kind of "marketing". i explain you what i did: i bought a surfacepro (first gen) to try installing osx on it. (without any kind of working warranty) i've been helped by the community to get it running, when i got it working i've written a guide and posted a video. i'm sure that me, my guide or my video are not the source of your angryness. have a good day. BRAHMAN
1 of the ac adapters also died while traveling. Went to microsoft main office in saigon. They had the adapter for 3 weeks or so, they supposedly brought it all the way to singapore and back to saigon. After that they emailed suggesting to read the fine print on the warranty. US and canada. Now near hong kong another adapter or the surface pro has bricked. So....there is what could be an approximately $1500 brick sitting in My lap now instead of a nice macbook. jape
misleading marketing hype? Well, I was thinking in exactly this kind of PEBCAK users when I was saying that is is too optimistic to think that the Wi-Fi would work some day =) There's a lot of people who would interpret that as "next week" when it could very well be "next decade" or "never". Then come complaining because "you made them believe" this or that, etc. So I think it is important to note those kinds of things, even if those of us who are in here just for hacking and fun know it. That said, I think that other than Wi-Fi this device works actually quite well with OS X, better than most laptops with this form factor and probably better than average, too. I mean, it's a miracle sleep doesn't crash the entire thing.... 1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/292645-guide-surfacepro-1-2-osx-android-windows-multiboot/page/63/#findComment-2018457 Share on other sites
JahStories
yes you are absolutely right, it's better to don't generate much hype, cause people could have a lot of expectations.... but sometime i don't understand unuseful angryness, we are not getting payed, we are just sharing our knowlegle. i think that he could get angry with microsoft on thier service line for a broken powersupply not on a guide about running an operating system on it. about the wifi issue and the litlle discussion we had, i knew that it was really hard to get a driver working, just not impossible, btw that's a small issue, as we have thumbusbcards. And now that i know that you are a skilled programmer i belive you, but i still hope Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/292645-guide-surfacepro-1-2-osx-android-windows-multiboot/page/63/#findComment-2018459 Share on other sites
BRAHMAN
Except when it sleeps and doesn't turn on again.......maybe it's the ac adapter, yet both ac adapters have seemingly gone on the osx side. Possibly a combo problem with the keyboard cover....which is not properly engineered nor designed well either. At this price point it seems fair to ask if you guys have used a macbook recently....Apple hires good designers and good engineers and cares about customers. JahStories
Never had any hardware related issue with my surfacepro and my gf have the latest macbookair 13", and to use photoshop she ask me the surfacepro cause she likes to work with the pen. I even like how the surface pro look and feel, i think that it's preety solid, with a good construction and the only "decent" computer with multitouch & pen support. it's just a bit too heavy. so that's is just my opinion, as well as what you have written is just yours. p.s. never seen in life an os that kills the ac adapter, come on! 2 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/292645-guide-surfacepro-1-2-osx-android-windows-multiboot/page/63/#findComment-2018461 Share on other sites
BRAHMAN
Yes, the pen is nifty for ps......................................worth it? No. Especially considering wacom makes cheap bluetooth pens now. The surface logo has flashed a few times on the screen.....so maybe there's hope to sell it with full disclosure to a masochist. The unreliable wifi kext was a usb nano adapter kext that wouldn't load every time.....neither would avastarfwloader and after installing it the usb nano bluetooth stopped. So can anybody answer the question about forcing kexts to load? Eldabbagh
I do not think the guide is messy. Maybe there's some redundancy but not enough to even warrant a cleanup. I must admit, its a little hard to follow for me... Ive installed 10.9.2 on my Pro and Pro 2 a couple times now and each time is like a choose your own adventure. That being said, they are both up and running with TouchDrivers. As far as open issues I'm still figuring out: Bluetooth: Internal Bluetooth is not working on either device for me, although it seems it is recognized. I have a kensington bt dongle that I had used with the same install in the past... So it may be that, not sure. USB: Occasionally units freezes after USB insertion, or USB is not recognized all together even after wake from sleep. Forcing USB in clover usually fixes this upon a reboot. WiFi Dongles: More hit and miss than bluetooth. I have one from patriot and another from a generic brand at frys. Both use the same wifi utility. Removing ethernet adapters (except for the self routing one) and then rebooting/re adding them fixes the issue. Cold Boot: I always boot both of the units from cold boot, occasionally having the units panic at boot, requiring me to modify boot settings in Clover. TouchBase: Amazing, working 100% and free of charge Thank you guys, especially jape and JahStories You made my dreams come true PS: Ill get right to updating my signature... I foresee myself participating much more, man it's been a long time since Hackintosh was in my daily vocab! PSS: I forgot to say thanks to mythamp for the iCloud and related. I need to get a new mobo-sn though, can't register ID with iTunes...
