brownpants
Thanks a lot pal for the BIG HELP. I'm now posting from my OSX 10.4.8 apmos: I am a new owner of a AsRock Conroe945-G. I have a single Seagate 320 GB SATA HD, and a 6300 Core 2 Duo. I am attempting to dual-boot Vista (Partition 1) and OSX (Partition 2) By following the guide at: http://www.profit42.com/index.php/2006/12/...ot-on-intelamd/ I believe I have the same problem as you. I have installed the JaS 10.4.8 Repack with no problems. I made the OSX partition active, and rebooted. But when it loads, I get the grey screen and a "no smoking" like symbol. Booting with -v gives a series of messages: "Still waiting for root device" Since we seem to have the same problem, could you share with me how you got 10.4.8 to boot? Sailfish: since you were able to get apmos going, maybe you could PM me the same information? Best regards. goofygoober
Infamous, did you have any joy getting USB2 working? I worked my way back through this 28 page thread, which on dial-up took forever. I applied the suggested bios settings by Topazbar and managed to get mifki to boot. Excellent! And all together not obvious to newbies out there. Someone needs to write a complete top-to-bottom tutorial. And it seemed that the USB2 was talking to my card reader and having quite a sustained conversation when on the second copying of a 700mb chunk of data... it froze. I tired many variations in the bios with no joy. I even tried the Apple developers 10.4.8 USB patch but no joy. If anything that slowed it down. Fed up I uninstalled the Apple USB patch, took a usb2 card out of another PC and put it in the Asrock, reapplied the Apple USB2 patch and ran repair in Disk Utility. I had to run to work but before hand I managed to transfer two 400mb files without any problem... bar that it was running at more like USB1.1 speed. I will report back if the news is still good, with the card make and number. USB2 cards are cheap, though it is a pity to loose the slot. Perhaps I can get a combined USB2/Firewire card. Anyone know any good/STABLE(!) ones? Detosx, i'm also having a time getting usb to work. as of now nothing usb is even recognized when i plug it in (thumb drive, external hd, mouse) i installed the semthex 10.4.8 with the soundblaster audio usb and got a panic. so i uninstalled and tried the other usb driver -no dice. what did everyone do to get usb working? in the earlier pages of this thread usb was installed without a hitch, what are we missing?! Detosx
It would appear, based on a few posts, that JAS 10.4.8 causes USB problems that earlier versions didn't. If you read through the thread you can see that a lot of users didn't do a clean install of JAS 10.4.8; they updated from earlier versions. Infamous is using his iPod and I am using an SD card reader but... how many other users are making this kind of use of USB? I would think it works fine with a USB printer and so on. The Asrock appears not to like the USB patch or the USB soundblaster patch, so we shouldn't install them. You live and learn... but I am still waiting to learn how some people have got fully functional USB2 and some have not. What are we missing here or is it simply a matter that nominal level USB2 works fine but bulk data transfer does not? goofygoober
Detosx - now that you bring it up, i completely agree and am ashamed i didn't notice it myself. 10.4.8 has usb problems with this mboard!!! all those who are USB problem-less have upgraded from 10.4.4-10.4.7 to 10.4.8 is it possible to use an older usb patch? -say from 10.4.7? i rely heavily on USB and i'm dying without it, sometimes small transfers, sometimes large ones. my itunes library sits on a USB2.0 external drive (right now i compute in silence due to lack of USB!!) if i understand correctly you never were successful using onboard usb? which usb pci card are you using? Infamous
As far as I know, onboard USB is completly dead on this board, if you check "USB Patch" during installation in JAS 10.4.8 Re-Seed. You shouldn't use it wit this mobo. My problem is that I can't get USB2.0 speed with any device, only working in 1.1 mode. Also, connecting the iPod and trasnfering freezes iTunes and there's nothing I can do with it, not possible to cancel, close, anything. Connecting the digital camera and transfering the photos causes my USB keyboard and USB mouse go crazy and jumpy. BUT this is happening only when I connect these devices to my FRONT USB connectors (on my case). I'm not trying to resolve it though - the case was cheap and maybe it's just crappy. But i'd like to have full USB2.0 speed on normal board USB connectors. Detosx
Having formatted my hard drive and having then this time chosen Mifki from the Custom install options instead of Semthex, I found I wasn't seeing USB2 speed; with Semthex I was definitely getting USB2 speeds but I was unable to transfer as large chunks of data as Mifki. Ultimately under either the problem was the same - the transfer would lock-up and Cancel didn't work and nor could you reboot. Windows doesn't like you to press the off button but OS X thankfully seems less upset. I come firmly from a Windows background so it is possible I am missing a beat or two. I think it might be a power issue, though that said I tried without my Apple USB keyboard and mouse connected and it made no difference. I read elsewhere that some USB sockets on the same motherboard work better than others, that you should try them all. I will give that a go. Perhaps it would be an idea to set up a poll to find out who has working USB1.1 or USB2 and how they did it. I know my motherboard isn't a dud because USB transfers work perfectly well under XP and Vista beta. The USB2 card. I have been doing the Christmas thing so I am not sure if the PCI usb2 card has done the job or not but in the few minutes I had to test it, it transfered two large files without the transfer freezing... but at USB1.1 speeds. I have taken my computer to my folks house and will set it up later, in a black Cooler Master Cavalier case (on the large side but a slick minimalist look)I have two or three USB2 cards and will try them all and report back later tonight, British GMT. My main concern is at some point getting a good USB2 sound card to work. goofygoober
so NOBODY has got OnBoard USB2.0 to work with the 10.4.8 install DVD? Any preferred PCI USB2.0 cards known to work with this MB? -dumb question 01: how do i remove the "USB Fix" patch i installed during the initial install? -dumb question 02: can we install the usb patch from an earlier version install DVD like say 10.4.6? Detosx
Everything seemed to be going so promisingly. I think where before I was having slow USB transfer speeds under Mifki it was possibly because the computer needed rebooting. Today, having set every up down at my folk's house, I was able to transfer a 350mb file from the hard drive to the SD card in 1.18 seconds. I threw the file back and forth and no problems. Joy. Then I rebooted. Back to square one. Freezes. I tried with two different USB cards. Freezes. I intend to buy a new USB card reader/writer. Hi goofygoober, go to the apple developer site - http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers...d/usbdebug.html - and download the most recent USB patch. Install the non log version, it will overwrite the failed patch. I am assuming you are able access your computer through a standard non usb keyboard and non usb mouse. Otherwise you are a bit stuck! I think we are going to have to install earlier versions of JAS and apply the updates. I don't relish that, at all, but unless someone can suggest an alternative path, I'm stumped. Question. Having applied the Ethernet patch I am amble to go online for about five minutes - and then the computer demands that it be rebooted. I have no idea how to edit kexts but if someone has an easy walk through of the procedure that daemones lists, that would be a wonderful Christmas present for newbies of all shades. To all Asrock ConRoe 945G users who have working USB/USB2 could you please list which JAS DVD you used and how you went about updating (I shall also check the wiki in case that is stated already). Sailfish
I have a basic system with a fresh 10.4.8 install and the Semthex Kernel (8). I interface to a 160GB Crossfire drive via USB and firewire almost daily as well as thumb drives. Never have I had a hang or a crash. As for the transfer speeds, how is this being guaged? Are you transfering a file in XP or Vista and timing it and then repeating in x86? USB is rock stable on this board... I am wondering if I and others have corrupted Jas install DVDs or if we're missing a trick in the bios (I'm following Topazbar's bios advice from earlier in this thread) or if a jumper on the board is set differently on some issues of the motherboard than on others and needs changing. It could just be that our setups are flaky with certain USB items and not others; my Apple USB keyboard and mouse work just fine. I intend to buy another usb card reader, or possibly two, and try them, though the one I have at the moment works perfectly under XP and Vista if the cards are properly seated. For the sake of those having problems could you post your bios settings, taking it as read that we are all using the latest bios, and what jumper settings you changed, if any? Infamous
What jumper settings and bios settings do you mean? In USB section I have all 3 things enabled and my BIOS is 1.2. Detosx
Thanks Infamous. I also have all three USB settings enabled, my BIOS is the latest 1.4 (though I had the same problem with 1.0). I haven't tried changing the sleep jumper but notice that a few users have, so will try that. I am writing this on a Mac mini, on which the USB SD carder reader/writer works perfectly. Anyone with working USB care to list their full sections and whether they got their via a fresh install or updates, this would be especially interesting from those who originally had USB problems but now do not. plympton
Last night I tried the latest Semthex one via Prasys installer, and it broke my sleep. Switched back to either the early Semthex or Mifki (not sure which one!). I'd like to try the latest daemonES kernel, but I can't find a link for it. I've looked on applelife.ru but haven't seen it. NEW MOBO! ASRock ConRoe945G-DVI, ASUS EN7300GT SILENT DVI QE/CI/Sleep Firewire800 with Adaptec8300 GLAN (daemonES/NeoPheus) Hibernate/Suspend to RAM works! Stereo sound out (Azalia) Audio in with iSight mic. 10.4.8 Thanks to JaS/Mifki/Semthex and the rest of the insanelymac community What kernel are you using? I'm finally updating to 10.4.8, but the kernel I have loaded kills off my sleep. Any help on where to find one that works? Also, how did you get Suspend to RAM to work? Any guide on that? Looks like we have a pretty close system (I'm running an e6600 Core 2 Duo @ 2.7 GHz) I haven't gotten my sound to work (network did out of the box), either, but unless I can get sleep to work, doesn't really matter! (I had Jas 10.4.7 -> Upgraded using Apple's 10.4.8, then replaced AppleSMBIOS.kext and Kernel, though I'm not 100% sure what version!) Edit: I've tried both a Nov 29th ("latest) Kernel and an Oct 29th (xu-792.12.8 Mifki) kernel - neither will wake from sleep, though I do get a "USB wake" hit in my system.log. -Dan Edited December 27, 2006 by plympton Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/24637-asrock-conroe945g-dvi/page/23/#findComment-263026 Share on other sites

Outstanding I'm very happy for you. USB works with keyboard, mouse and printer but not with my card reader/writer, so I guess I will go about getting a new one, they are after all very cheap. Who has a working one, what brand and model number? You are ahead of me if you have sound and network working. I must quiz you about the kexts! Sailfish
I combed through my BIOS this evening (1.4) and there is no magic... All three USB options are checked. It's a JaS 10.4.8 reseed burned to a -R DVD on a Plextor 755 SATA DVD/RW drive with Nero 6 at the default speed. USB is just as stable as a rock. A lot of high end graphics work gets done on this machine so we regularly have single images in the 100MB range and either Quark or Indesign files in the 3-4 GB range. I prefer the firewire but the drive supports both and so both get used. On a last note. During install, the USB option is not checked. I am running an old IBM PS2 Keyboard and a USB Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse. Certainly nothing exotic there:) I will get a hold of a 2 GB file and time its transfer with my current system. I am dying to try this new USB2 fix so I will apply that and retime everything and post the results. Hopefully I will be timing results and not reinstalling my OS...... Detosx
Quote: I am dying to try this new USB2 fix so I will apply that and retime everything and post the results. Hopefully I will be timing results and not reinstalling my OS...... If it ain't broke, don't fix it - as the saying goes! I opted to try it because, like others, I had decided to try, post install, the USB fix patch on the JAS 10.4.8 DVD; the result was that I was frozen out of USB altogether. I had enough smarts to try using a regular non usb mouse and keyboard and rescued myself by downloading the USB2 patch. Really what I am asking at this point is who is using external SD card readers with this motherboard and are they able to transfer semi large blocks of data/avi files to the desktop without the transfer freezing. (I installed Ubuntu Linux last night and, having changed the colourings, love it - it works perfectly with my SD card reader, as does XP and Vista beta). For those wondering why the current excitement about Linux:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgTaswP1njI...ted&search= The guys pseudo Mac-like desktop is a bit cluttered but the functionally useful visual effects suggest Apple and MS have a lot of catching up to do. Or is it too over the top? There are a load of other youtube clips of Beryl/xgl out there. If any of you do have a card reader/writer that works perfectly with the Asrock 945-G, could you tell me which brand and model number? gaylord_66
Hi there! My Asrock ConRoe945G-DVI will arrive tomorrow (at least i hope so ). Anyway, my setup will consist of: Asrock ConRoe945G-DVI Conroe E6300 1 GB DDR-800 EM-Original CL5 80 GB SATA2 + 40 GB ATA Hardrives (256MB ATI Radeon x1950 Pro PCIe) Now i have a few questions: 1. I read about the FSB only going till 299 without fiddling around with the PCI-sync stuff. How high would my E6300 run then with FSB 299? 2. Since the board only supports DDR-667, and i wanted to be on the safe side concerning overclocking i got DDR-800 memory. If i run the 800 memory with only 667, would i be able to have it run with CL4 speed? 3. Is there a lot of speed difference between SATA and ATA? In windows, you can tell sata is a wee bit faster, but its not really noticeable. (4. Is there a way to get my ATI x1950 Pro to work without much hassle? Does the Natit stuff work for that card? Or is it not supported yet, since i cant find anything about it in the wiki....) Hope someone can answer these Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/24637-asrock-conroe945g-dvi/page/23/#findComment-264201 Share on other sites

Infamous
I found out that it also depends on the RAM you use. I've installed another memory, different brand, and now I can't even POST on 321mhz (112 PCIE). If I put in my old memory stick, I can boot at 350mhz. BTW, BIOS 1.5 is out on Asrock site.
