I'm no expert, but why are you installing kexts?

If you prepare a memory stick with Stells v3 and then once Snow Leopard has installed run the v3 installer again on the boot drive you shouldn't need any kexts. I sure didn't and my hardware isn't exactly the same but you say yours is...

You are right. I will re-start this process once again just as you said.

Also, to fix the "about this mac" problem, I had to disable "quick boot" in the BIOS, which wasn't included in the lifehacker instruction jpgs.

You say you are using exactly Lifehacker parts which I'm assuming means that you bought the extra Nic card. Did you make sure to disable onboard NIC in BIOS? I'm not an expert and I have no idea if that will help or not, but that's the only thing that came to mind. Also, the "About This Mac" fix is very interesting. I've seem some scattered problems across the thread about that (although mine worked perfectly OOTB) However, I know that someone was putting together a FAQ and that might be something to add. Also, make sure you're running the correct BIOS. I know that the versions differ slightly depending on your revision, but FB for Rev 1.6 is important. Not sure about others.

Thanks for your help. I have done a fresh reinstall again with v3, and it's not working. So I'm thinking the next variable to test out is FB for Rev 1.6.

Gonna install XP, update the firmware, then give it another shot. Will be back with the results.

Be warned, XP doesn't like AHCI or this board. (SUPPOSEDLY SP# discs can work, and you *should be able to use drivers for it on boot, but not many are successful.)

We suggest Vista Windows 7.

Some have claimed FD works for the BIOS, but FB is the one we know works for sure. (FD has shown problems)

hate to bump, but has anyone else experienced the usb ports on the back no responding on boot up and have a fix? Like I said before, keyboard won't respond until OSX has started. I have to move the keyboard to the front ports to be able to enter bios or pick a different drive to boot to.

Thank you too for your help. I scrapped the XP flash drive since you don't recommend.

So I just want to confirm with you.

When I boot off and install Windows 7 on the USB, and I get ready to update the motherboard's firmware, I'm only supposed to install this, right?

Are there motherboard drivers I should install also? Audio, chipset, LAN, SATA RAID drivers that I should update?

Thank you all.

The only thing I can say for sure is that FD is the newest BIOS, and we've seen problems.

FB works. As for installing other drivers? I think someone used it to make the front audio port a different type. (The board supports HD and non)

Someone also installed the tuning SW to OC the board too. Other than niche stuff?

Nothing is required for the install, no Winblows at all. :-)

Thanks a lot b-cuz I had the same problem and couldn't figure it out until I read your post. Man I'm so thankful of you guys and insanelymac.com.

Hasn't happened to me with my Microsoft USB Keyboard and Logitech USB mouse. Both plugged into the back ports. Did you try any other slots/hardware?

So I installed the FB 1.6 Bios update for the Motherboard.

Proceeded to install the Mac with Stella's V3 install.

Although it didn't work out the box right Stella's install, just with a couple kexts I got the cpu working.

As far as i know, I'm good right now.

only problem I have is my ethernet card not working. The card is installed, shows up on the network prefs, but has a yellow dot besides it.

Unsure why, but since I have wireless for now, I'm not too concerned.

Thanks errbody! Cohphaser and backinmac!

Not sure if it will help or not, try a different ethernet cable and/or resetting the modem and router. The yellow dot just means that it established a connection but an error occurred when connecting.

I'll give that a shot for the ethernet issue.

Question though.

With an external hard drive attached through USB, I'm not able to start my CPU up. So I try to change BIOS and lo and behold, the external hard drive is set as the start up disk. But when I change my CPU's hard drive to be the start up disk and try to F10 out, my USB keyboard stops working... What gives?

And then, I take the USB external hard drive out the back and start up but still try to change BIOS around, because for some reason the first start up disk is set as floppy. I want to change that, so once I change it to hard disk and try to F10 out, once again, the keyboard stops.

Don't know what's going on, but not being able to have my external HD stuck in the whole time kinda blows! Any solutions to this?

Also.

I'm trying to use Screenflow, the popular mac screen capture program, and it gives me a recording error. "Due to an internal error, the recording has unexpectedly terminated."

I guess the video card isn't fully compatible for screen recording, huh?

Not sure about the keyboard thing, but bean5 was having issues with his keyboard in BIOS as well. As for Screenflow, other applications having problems needed to be booted in 32 bit mode to work. You probably want to check earlier posts, but I think when Chameleon comes up, you push any key to pause it (Just like you would to select another drive) and push -x32 and enter or something like that. Check earlier posts.

tried a few different ports in the back, same problem. Only fix is to use the ports in the front, but I'd rather have the keyboard connected to the back.

Copy that, Boss. Will give that a shot.

Beyond my knowledge. :) danyokeem was having issues with his keyboard in BIOS as well.

my problem isn't so much that the computer freezes. it's that the keyboard won't respond on boot...at least not until OSX starts. Once I get into OSX the keyboard (and the usb hub it's connected on) works. This randomly started happening, and wasn't an issue a few weeks ago. I thought it might have been the hub, but the same thing happens with the keyboard straight into the back panel. I just have to live with putting the keyboard on a front port and hope I don't knock it with my knee or something. I've since moved the tower to safer place so it's not that big of an issue.

It's starting to get hot where I am, and yesterday the cpu was idling at around 50-53C. Usually it's at 45-49C. I know that the stella installer removed some cpu management thing that causes higher temps to help with upgrades or whatever, but is there any hope to get this cpu temp down? Or is that just something we have to live with on a hacintosh?

I had the same issue, i had to try every USB in the back until it worked fine.

I eventually did find one. all good now.

If you are annoyed oh well, but just drop it, and let those that need help post here. If you want to say something then send me a message and keep it off here. Otherwise, go be a self-indulgent wiener else where, DONE!

This is probably and EXTREMELY long shot and I doubt it has to do with anything but, are your BIOS's locked? The reason I ask is because FD Bios fixed DES errors.
