bofors
It seems that Windows Vista might be a clone of Mac OS X 10.4 tiger. However, Window is not merely "one generation" behind OS X and in no way but some copied "eye-candy" will Vista be a clone of Tiger. Had Microsoft any clue about what they were doing, they would have largely thrown Windows in the trashcan where it belongs, started over, just used some kind of Unix as the base operating system like OS X and then added a GUI based on something like DirectX on top of that. Then they could have added a Windows emulator like Apple did with "Classic" in OS X to deal with backwards compatibility. In short, Microsoft did not copy OS X from the bottom up, yet again they just glossed over the top and missed were it counts. Jensonb
started over, just used some kind of Unix as the base operating system like OS X and then added a GUI based on something like DirectX on top of that. Indeed, and they allegedly put one such OS into development, but as a research project only. Why they would not want to turn this into a marketable product is simple: They like Windows too much for their own good. They're afraid it'll compete (Sound like a certain hardware/software company we love ?). Allthough why they don't just drop Windows and go with it alone is quite a brain tickler. Possibly partially the same reason. I'm seriously worried for the well-being of Blackcomb coders...They have to deal with Vista AS WELL Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/18302-windows-is-one-generation-behind-of-mac-os/#findComment-123608 Share on other sites
u1m2
...yet we will have to keep buying Windows as all the games will be released for it, all the apps will be released for it, all the drivers will be released for it and there are simply not enough developers/vendors to break the cycle. In the beginning people liked Windows for being simple and easy to use and as it got more popular and as all the developers started supporting them eventually it became a "Windows Only" world. Nowadays the quality of the end product is not the main reason why we buy the product but the fact that we have to use the product because of hardware and software support available for it. No wonder Microsoft doesn't care if their overpriced code is full of bugs, they know we will buy it somehow. gwprod12
If apple wasnt so incredibly stupid and evil, they'd do something like... Give OS X away. Why? Where's the money in that. Simple. You direct mail everyone in the world a copy of your operating system (10.4.7 maybe). Give them a simple way of testing it, like Ubuntu does. If the PC users of the world say "hey, this OS is better than windows... but there arent any apps" they'll put pressure on software developers to make their games work on the OS X platform. Then, when everyone in the world has OS X on their computer, they can release 10.5 or 6, a paid upgrade that includes apis similar to darwine. Then everyone will run Mac OS, Microsoft will colapse... and then they wont need to worry about the competition. Though, if you think about it... isnt that kinda happening now? PS. This was rhetorical. No Flames Please. sam_the_killer
By the way has anyone out there checked out the similarities between Safai and the NEW Polished OFFICE 12 BETA(Pre-Release). USES SIMILAR KIND OF THEME THOUGH. Thats why its a clear indication that Microsoft wants to add all those goodies that APPLE has packed in with Mac OS X Tiger. But what would MS do after the release of Leopard.... Same old story of Cheating & Copying... Looking at this fact seems that Microsoft lacks innovation in designing. But has a great innovation in renaming those..... Pixelation
I have Beta 2 copies of both Windows Vista and Office 2007. And frankly, once you start using them, they're not so bad. It basicly comes down to preferance. For the longest time, I really didn't like MacOS, mainly versions 5 through 7.6 because I felt like they differed way too much from Windows 3.x. And when Microsoft first released Windows 95. I completely hated it, and I wasn't a fan of OS7 at the time, but I would've used that over Win 95. Once I got used to the task bar and the Start menu, I felt better about it, still didn't like it, but I knew how to use it. Once OS 8 was released, I really liked it. Of course, the first time I used OS 8 was on a PowerBook G3 on display at the computer store, but I felt so at ease with it. Then in 2001-2002 school year, I was in a journalism class with new iMacs and iBooks with OS 9 and OS X installed on them. The momment I used OSX, I instantly fell in love with the system. Yes, Apple and Windows have had their share of simalierites and differances, and as technology changes our demands from an operating system and applications will change too. Today we want access to everything all at once but we want a simple, easy, and intelligent OS to provide this information. That's why we have things like Google Desktop, Windows Desktop Search, Sherlock, and Spotlight. But search isn't enough. It's how we search, and where we can find search boxes. I like how Apple has set up search in OSX. One icon, in the corner. Click it, enter your search, and it'll find it. But for both systems to be trully effective at search, the search engines must first index the hard drive(s). Microsoft still has a long ways to go before they are trully "copying Apple". First off they need the developers, software enginers and designers that have the same above-high-quality standards like Apple does. Then, they need to do field research, find out what Windows users like and don't like about the latest version of Windows, whatever it might be at the time. Currently, there are a lot of things with XP I don't like and alot I do like, and some new inovations in Vista that I like, and think "why wasn't that in XP in the first place?" Someone questioned why doesn't Microsoft get a UNIX shell and just start over? Well. First off, it's easier said than done. Yes, Apple did it, but they delayed OSX by about 5 or 6 years. OSX was orginally targeted for a release date in 1997 or 1998, (boy, that've made Windows 98, 2000 and Me look dated) but due to the demandes from developers, designers, and hardware enginners, they had to chuck the old System-base code and start all over. Yes, it was time and money well spent, but Apple had all of the resources needed to accomplish this for a very successful 2001 release. And even though Microsoft has the budget to do the same, they don't have the time or all of the resources that Apple did. You hear more of Microsoft pushing back release dates than you do about Apple even developing a new OS. You might hear "oh, did you hear what's coming out in 'Panther'?" but when you ask about a release date Apple has kept it fuzzy. I've noticed Microsoft saying "We will release on this date." then saying, "We have to move the date to this date." and it just keeps changing. Orginally, Windows 98 was suppost to be released in mid- to late- 1997, but was finally realsed in June 1998. I won't be surprised if Windows Vista starts shipping at the end of Febuary 2007. I do have my hopes up that they'll stay closer to their release date, mainly because of media pressure. Wow... that was a long post. And I didn't even get into great detail! Windows NT's (2000 and XP are NT 5) kernel was designed by Dave Cutler, who designed Digital's VMS operating system. In some ways NT resembles VMS. Then they go and put dog {censored} on top of it (win32, dos, etc). Digital put out some really cool stuff. But their management sucked. They've been a part of Mac OS since 1984, possibly even 1983 (I don't know if the Mac XL had it). Later versions of the Classic Mac OS ignored DAs, and OS X omitted them all together (until Tiger of course).
