Me: Hi, I'm looking at buying the MacBook Pro, but there were several reports of build quality issues that I was curious about. I've read a lot about some heat problems with bad thermal paste application and a whine from the processors. What can you tell me about that problem?

Apple Sales: I haven't actually heard anything about those issues.

Me: Oh really? Well, there are a lot of mentions of the problem on the Apple forum and around the internet.

Apple Sales: Typically whenever there is a model-wide issue we'll be sent a notice and a date by which the problem is expected to be fixed. I haven't gotten anything about it so far.

Me: Ok, well thanks so much for your time. You've definitely helped inform my decision. Have a great day.

Apple Sales: You too.

(Very nice guy - Apple definitely has the best online sales dept I've used... BTW, the thermal application problem IS model wide.)

The call time was effected by the protest it would have been closer to 1-2 minutes if they didn't have so many people calling in. You think that is bad some poor guy had to wait 7 minutes so that a tech could instruct him on how to open the cardboard box his computer came in.

I think you need to act stupid, let the guy sell you on the MBP, and pretend you are ready to buy. Then before you give the credit card numbers, you raise the questions. In particular you have to say what is up with that absurd amount of thermal compound? Then after you have exhausted your sales guy, ask to talk to some kind of supervisor or technical support person, because you need to be assured there is no problem.

I mean, this should be at least a fifteen minute phone call and more like half an hour to do it right.

I've just called: waited for 15min, talked to a guy that had no idea about mbp problems, then was transferred to a product specialist who refused to replace my mbp.

The issues I've got:

1. heat

-- so hot that it charred my table

2. whine

-- screen whine - goes away with low brightness

-- battery whine - this whine only from running with battery

-- display high pitch noise - which goes away with tilting display

3. battery failure (mine is W8608, suits the recall)

-- battery goes off after 30sec of unplugging ac adapter

either: drops from 5 bars to 0, or just stays at 5 after the computer goes off.

4. sleeping issues

-- often does not wake up after sleep/hibernate: either laptop wakes up but display doesn't, or no matter what I do the mbp stays asleep evident by the on "white" little led in front of the mbp.

The guy I talked to told me that the battery problem is with "re-calibration", but after I told him about the recall of batteries he looked it up and said "ok". He said he hasn't really heard about problems with the MBP. When I asked for a replacement he transferred me to a product specialist, and I was on hold for 10 min again. The product specialist sounded tired and told me that these problems is due to my mbp's old revision (yes I know!), but refused to give me a replacement. I told her that frankly a replacement is better for me because I've had experience with apple repair that they don't always do a thorough job. The person said she personally guarantees that they will be fixed, and she gave me her apple direct number and her name, and said that if after repair any of these issues show up, she will follow up herself. She didn't know about the battery recall either, so I had to tell her to change my battery as well as the logic board.

Anyways here's my experience with applecare today. They don't seem very friendly (slightly hostile), and not very informative of the mbp problems. Good luck for everyone else! I'm crossing my fingers that my mbp gets "fixed"...

...talked to a guy that had no idea about mbp problems...

Historically, Apple will refuse to acknowlege (or pretend to not know about) problems until they a solution in place. Now with respect to the gross misapplication of thermal compound here, the only solution is issue some kind of "re-call" program where either you send you MBP back to Apple so they can take all that {censored} off or talk to some Apple authorized service center to do it. That is a big expensive deal and Apple is not there yet.

Really, this is a defective product tort and we should be talking to some law firms who specialize in class action lawsuits against Apple. That will get this problem fixed much quicker than "whinning".

What is going on here? I would assume that there would be a glut of posts... Surely, doing something is better than doing nothing, despite the criticisms from those who believe this effort to be in vain? Anyway, Is there another place(message board etc.) where callers are providing feedback, I really would like to hear other's experiences...

The report I just got said there are still alot of people calling compared to a usual saturday. so y'all are still going strong. a request from the techs:

It is not our fault that these things are happening please understand that we are doing the best we can with what we have to work with. but it is not our fault we are treated like mushrooms around here.

----

My friends are hopeful that you will remember that they aren't th problem please don't yell they are just as frustrated as you are.

Thanks

Good to hear! ...and I totally agree with you. A respectful demonstration is magnitudes more effective. Given confrontation from an irrational person who is obviously out of control, versus someone who is calm and in control, I would fear most the rational "cool-headed" person who doesn't appear to be desperate ( they obviously don't have a lack of cards up their sleeve!). Always a great reminder...

Kurosbride - you seem to have registered on this board only to post in this thread ;)

I think Apple should atleast acknowledge that they have messed up. These are not 10 dollars toys that we have here - we have spent nearly 2000 dollars in getting these machines. I am from India and I have spent 2800 dollars for my 1.83 MBP. I purchased it five days back.

Along with heat/whine , I am getting electric shocks from my MBP , I had called up the Call Centre Help here in India and he took me on a merry go round without addressing the real issue. It is only after reading these forums that I found out what the issues are.

I suggest lets start a separate thread to discuss this further ; maybe purchase a separate domain and forum, set up paypal donations and create a group which will fight this lawsuit.

That person deserved to wait a whole lot longer! ;)

Class Action sounds interesting but i'm no legal mind - any lawyers out there - how much does it cost?

Perhaps you can pass on to your friends at AppleCare that we appeciate we're causing them a little extra work, but that we don't have any gripes towards them and just want to get the problem solved. (And thank them for being helpful to everyone who has called so far.)

Sorry Kuros - don't take it personally :D

I am a bit mad here since I am getting mild shocks here once in a few minutes. I will be taking it to the service centre on Monday so let's hope for the best. The Call centre guy had told me there was no need for it since it might be my fault (with my power supply) which I know now is not the case.

I agree with you guys, but the calls just aren't coming in, i mean canada is getting flooded, but you guys in the US just aren't making enough noise to compete with your macbooks. there are tons of people waiting to take calls for the US but they just aren't comin through! and I'm gettin bored just sitting here.
