colddiver
Well... I decided to bite the bullet and get Vista Ultimate upgrade. I now have it installed both in Parallels and on its own HD (32-bit, unfortunately since I can't start the darn 64-bit installer from XP 32-bit - I really wish MS would stop the nonsense concerning their licenses). Chameleon boots it fine (didn't have much luck with Windows XP). To make everything work smoothly, I had to do the following: - Install all Mac OS HD and the SATA DVD Burner on SATA with SATA RAID/AHCI Mode set to AHCI - Install the Windows HD on GSATA (first port) with on-board SATA/IDE CTRL mode set to IDE - Set the boot priority to my Mac OS X HD (the one with Chameleon) With this setup, everything works. I imagine there is a way to move everything to AHCI. I may look into this later. The big question I have now is should I attempt to activate both Vista setup (unclear to me if the Vista Ultimate license allows to have it installed twice on the same machine). Concerning the heat potential issue I reported before, I set the fan speed to max in the BIOS and this seems to have solved the problem (I'm not getting much more noise). I encoded a full movie in H264 (2-pass encoding) and temperature remained around 65 - 70 celcius (average) which looks OK to me. feng'a
I have a special thanks to say to everdone. Nice prompt reply to a PM I sent him regarding his comments about EFI booting Chameleon 2rc1. So... I have done it! and it's working like a dream (so far) What I did was... Prep HDD with OS/combo update Run wolfie's script with MAJ's kexts and the vanilla kernel Run zhell's script to upgrade Munky's (what wolfie's script does) to use Chameleon 2rc1. It just WORKED!. Nothing needed to be installed onto the HDD that wasn't straight off the retail disk! I'm so stoked! So now I'm running booting directly to the RAID card booting off the EFI partition: GA-EX58-UD5 w/ i7 920 12GB RAM DDR1600 Areca ARC-1222 SAS/SATA RAID HBA w/ 4x1TB disks in RAID10 ATI HD4870 Dual DVI running Dual 24" Screens (CI/QE out of the box) FW800 expansion card Drobo w/ Drobo Dash via FW800 WD MyBook Studio 2 via FW800 LG BD/HDDVD Combo Wireless Di Novo KB for Mac, MX Revolution Mac webcam from Logitech (forgot the model ) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149505-guide-retail-os-x-install-1058-on-gigabyte-ga-ex58-ud5-core-i7-mobo/page/81/#findComment-1195425 Share on other sites
slipperydip
Hi everyone... I've been able to get my machine built around the GA-EX58-UD5 up and running with 10.5.7 following this fantastic guide... however I have not been able to get QE working no matter what I try! My card is a ASUS 9400GT. 512MB RAM, Device ID: 0x065b, Vendor ID: 0x10de. I have tried: efi strings, natit, nvinject, nvdarwin, nvkush. I've also gone to the lengths of getting the rom off the graphics card and using NVCAP Maker to give me the NVCAP (it's 04000000000003000c0000000000000700000000 btw). I've been around the block too many times with this now and so I'm offering a $50 reward to the first person that helps me get QE active with my current setup. Whatever I try, I still have "Quartz Extreme: Not Supported". bah! I'm absolutely no expert in this and I might be doing something wrong, but I am technically competent and know I'm not far off getting this solved... with the right help. I will send $50 USD via PayPal to the first person that tells me a config solution with my current setup which leads to me successfully getting QE running. PM me please! My res is great - running 1920 x 1200 with a 24" Dell LCD (2405FPW), machine is running nicely but I need QE to run Logic. I have spent so many hours on this... have enjoyed the learning, but now I'm all out of ideas and need it to work. :-) PM me please! jolt23
Hi I have a question about the bios set up. I installed the bootloader and leopard fine on the hd. When i try to boot up as AHCI the boot crashes and gives me a restart screen. If i try to boot IDE i get a still waiting for root device error. Does anyone know what problem i am running. I have also dissabled HT and set 1 core active only. I have tried searching the forums but cant fine anything that is similar to my problem running this set up. hobes270
Alright first I want to say thank you to DD and all you people who I read and got info off of! I have a few outstanding issues though. 1. I can only run chameleon v1, when I put v2 on, it goes to the apple boot screen with the grey spinning circle but then it just fades to a blue screen and hangs their for hours. But when v1 is on, it boots just fine. When v2 is on there the boot screen works great, but then when I tell it to boot into OSX it hangs after the apple. So I throw v1 back on the same drive and it works great..... 2. When I go to system profiler, for just about everything under hardware it says "There was an error while gathering this information." The only thing I can see is the graphics card. I tried changing settings using the script, but it didn't help anything in system profiler. I tried changing settings in BIOS and everything, but no luck yet. Thanks! matt1801
Hi Guys, First, thanks to dd and company for the hard work on making this board functional! Second, I am having some trouble with my wifi card and I was wondering if anyone else is having similar issues or can offer some suggestions for a fix. My card is an asus wl 138g V2 (broadcom chip). When I first built my rig using the UD5 board the card worked out the box with 10.5.7, no problem. However at the same time I began using Ethernet and forgot about the airport. Fast forward one month to today, and I tried to turn on the airport card in the menu bar only to find it is not there! It is also not in systempref/network. Reboots do not solve the issue. I also tried removing the pci card and reinserting it. No dice! Sometime in the last month I did or installed something to make my card disappear. So, I opened up my system/library/extensions folder and sorted extensions by date modified. Please see the attached image for a list. Could someone tell if one of the recently modified kext is the cause for my disappearing airport? I did not install any kext (to the best of my knowledge!) but maybe one of the system updates I installed broke something? Thanks so much, Matt PS. on a better note, I will soon be posting a description of my experiences with this board. I am a musician and I use a variety of peripherals like iLok keys, usb midi devices with their own drivers, and an apogee duet firewire interface. In short, the machine works great with everything I have! Even sleep works flawlessly! slipperydip
Thanks to everyone for their help... the problem was that the wrong boot.plist file had the EFI/GFX string. Here's a quick summary for others: My version of OSX86Tools was generating the EFI string correctly, BUT it was inserting this into /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist ... that's not the right file! The right file is in /Extra once I put the EFI string onto the com.apple.boot.plist (note lower case "b") then I booted up with QE. Fantastic!! hobes270
Even sleep works flawlessly! I have EVERYTHING working to 100% right now except for sleep. How do I go about getting sleep to work? It will go into sleep, but will never come back out. I am using chameleon 2, on DD script 3.91. Hi Hobes, Sleep has been the biggest mystery to me apart from my airport issue. Here's a summary of my sleep oddessy: Part 1: 1. Installed iPC 10.5.6 2. Sleep worked out of box Part 2: 1. Installed 10.5.7 using DD method 2. Sleep worked, but instant kernel panic on wake from sleep 3. Upgraded to F8b bios, same sleep result 4. Changed hibernate mode (open terminal, type "pmset -g" to see what your current hibernate mode is, and look back about 25-30 pages for explanation and directions on how to change it) to all available values, sleep still would not work. 5. Left hibernate mode on mode "0" and quit working on sleep! Part 3: 1. About 3 weeks later I tried sleep and it worked! I could wake from sleep and my system remained stable for many hours after! I cannot tell you what the heck I did to spontaneously get sleep working, I suspect it must have been a software upgrade I downloaded, or an unintentional tweak to the hibernate mode settings. I have attached a photo of my terminal running the "pmset -g" command. Honestly, I never thought sleep would work on my system. I have over a dozen usb devices, usb midi, usb bluetooth, logitech wireless mouse, etc. I figured all those peripheral would make sleep finicky forever. But as of today, it seems to work great. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I suspect with the shear variety of system configurations out there finding a "silver bullet" sleep solution will be next to impossible. I've also listed my system config below. Cheers and good luck, Matt Gigabyte UD5 F8b bios DD install method with Chameleon 2 rc1 bootloader Core i7 920 (no overclock) 6gb ocz ram 3 sata hd drives Pci wifi card EVGA 9800gtx graphics with netkas.org drivers Sata dvd drive over 1 dozen usb peripherals apple bluetooth keyboard apogee duet firewire audio interface samsung t260hd monitor Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149505-guide-retail-os-x-install-1058-on-gigabyte-ga-ex58-ud5-core-i7-mobo/page/81/#findComment-1196135 Share on other sites
dr3amscap3
PREPARATION It is ideal to have two physical drives (not two partitions on the same drive) or, at least, another Mac system to work from. One drive must already have OS X installed and running. This may mean using another Mac or installing a easy-to-use distro like Kalyway on the smaller/slower drive. (I only mention Kalyway, because it is the only distro I'm familiar with and know works well with this board. There may be more recent distros that can achieve equal success.) Partition your target drive in Disk Utility using the GUID Partition Table (in Options button). Make an ISO of your Retail DVD and download the Combo update, if needed.(The ISO of your DVD is not really needed, but it will shorten your install times dramatically. Trust me, when things go wrong (and they will) and you have to do an emergency install, more time spent waiting is directly proportional to higher blood pressure.) RUNNING THE SCRIPT Double-click RUN-PATCHER and enter your password. You will be prompted with a selection of valid HFS drives to work with. Default choices are highlighted in bold type. Confirmed target drive name is saved for future use. Install your choice of bootloader or pre-patch (option #2). An option is provided to set target partition as active (option #3). The activate drive feature works with user to unmount all drive partitions (this is necessary for activation), including listing open files/running processes that prevent them from unmounting. The script will check for the presence of a mounted "Mac OS X Install DVD" (or ISO) and prompt you if you wish to run that installer (option #4). Install from your Retail DVD and, immediately following that, the lastest combo updater. (There is NO need to boot into your new install first, before installing the combo updater.) Run the kext/kernel installer (option #5). This is preconfigured to install the required kexts for the Gigabyte EX58-UD5 motherboard, or any motherboard with the same chipsets. The kext/kernel installer automatically updates the boot caches for you. Run the DSDT patcher (option #7) and the patched DSDT file will be installed in the appropriate location. Your system is ready for reboot! I've followed these steps (script version 3.91) in the install and on reboot I get passed Chameleon v2, the gray screen with busy icon and then a modal overlay that says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power..." I removed DSDT.aml from /Extras as that was mentioned in the script, same restart screen. I have a GA-EX58-UD5 with Asus EN9600GT SILENT video cards, and Realtek 8111D dual onboard gig-E ports. I have 2 drives, qtosh and dummy. Dummy = iATKOS v7 install (the ethernet isn't working and video cards are at 1024x768 generic defaults) qtosh = retail install, with combo 10.5.7 update applied, partitioned with GUID. In step #2 above I chose qtosh. #5 I chose Chameleon V2 #6 I made it active #7 I installed from my MBP install media and ran combo updater 10.5.7 #8 I ran the kext installer, accepted all the defaults #9 ran the DSDT patcher and rebooted That's where I am now. How do I get past this restart loop or where do I look for more clues? Thanks. Per Wiklander
Well, the problem here was that I didn't get the chance to enter any params since I had accidentally activated quiet boot. After using another computer for the past week, I decided to fix this today and my guess that pounding F8 would give me the menu back proved correct. So I booted with -v and, as often happens when you are desperate enough to ask for help, everything worked just fine, no gray screen of death. *sigh* It's working just as good after a few reboots now so I guess I'll never find out what the actual problem was that caused the gray screen at boot last week. When this happened again today I decided to find out what was wrong. After a series of reboots I'm pretty sure that the only time I get the KP is when I have my headphones connected to the front audio headphone jack on my box. Back (on mobo) ports work fine. Plugging the headphones into the front mic jack is also fine. See attached image for the actual KP.
