Yes, exactly per your instructions. The main difference is that I have no mkext in the /Extra folder and instead I just have the individual kexts alone in the /Extra/Extensions folder. (these listed below, although ironically I was going to try to remove those two you recommended):

I found a cool little app called Kextspy which just lists which kexts are loaded and then puts that list into a text edit document. Here's my list it shows what is loaded and what if any linked kexts each kext has (that's the stuff within the <>). Here's the kextspy app if anyone else wants it. It's really just using a utility that's already in OSX but it does it a bit better by putting the list into text edit so you can save it.

I just tried it, without the mkext

everything works great just from the extra/extensions/ like your setup

I believe the <key>-f</key> <string></string> fixes more than just allowing loading the realtek kext. (the -f is supposed to flush the cached system mkext and recreate it at boot)

Because I don't remember the ich10 working off the extension folder only, without the -f boot flag it had to be in the mkext, that's why I kept using the mkext in the extra folder.

but I checked and the ich10 kext is working too (in the system profiler it would say unknown if it wasn't loaded)

 

so no more mkext for me, and everything is in the extra/extensions/

it's a much easier kext management than using an mkext

Well, thanks to everybody at insanelymac, hackint0sh.org, all authors; I got my Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R + 9800GT working absolutely perfect! 

 

Only things that matter : motherboard + video card. 

 

(Incidentally, I had considered getting Vista home premium OEM as a backup just in case I couldn't get OS X to install. Then I decided there was just no way I was ever going to install that steaming piece of turd in my beautiful new hardware.)

 

Tried lots of stuff, learned lots of things, some stuff didn't work or didn't work quite correctly. Finally, this set worked right for my hardware.

 

Things I used : 

 

(1) grub-dfe.iso (boot up)

 

(2) Retail Mac Box Set with OSX 10.5.6 + iLife +iWork. 

 

(3) UD3P-Package with UInstaller, Chameleon.

 

(4) ALC889a (ALC inject, AppleHDA)

 

(5) OSX86Tools

 

(6) NVinstaller v.52

 

(edit) Remember to set everything to AHCI mode in the Bios. I only used SATA drives & SATA dvd rom.

 

Put it all together, repaired permissions, and everything I threw at it including software updates, applications, old ppc applications, games....... just plain work! Only thing that doesn't work are OS9 applications because there's no Classic environment. 

 

Found out that if there are issues, these may not be hackintosh specific. Macs have just as many issues. For example, biggest issue now fixed; I had a problem with my logitech mouse jumping and stuttering after coming out of sleep. Unusable. Only a hard reboot would clear the issue. Tried various things including removing airport utility & installing various drivers including LCC 2.7. Nothing worked until I searched about a message I kept receiving in the console, specifically :  

 

"(org.postfix.master) Failed to count the number of files in "/var/spool/postfix/maildrop": No such file or directory"

 

Turned out this was a Time Machine problem. If you restore a system from backup, some files are excluded. After reading & applying the fix suggested here http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofiversi...php/t87650.html , mouse jumping / jerking disappeared along with the console errors. FYI for anybody who has the same problem.

 

 

(edit) btw, CMR is now super super smooth, UT2004 runs at about 200fps at highest settings & 1920x1200 resolution...... O_O

I leave my computer on all the time, and every 3 days or so I go into my office to find the "Your computer needs to be shut down and restarted" screen - not sure what that screen is called, but basically the equivalent of a blue-screen of death.

 

Anybody else running into this? I don't ever sleep my machine - just run a screen-saver.

And even if you don't use IDE I would still take Eliade's advice and disable that setting. I do for both my machines. In fact I do it for my real Macs too.

 

I also leave my machine on constantly, in fact my AppleTV Server Hackintosh is running 24x7 for a few weeks now. As you do, I never put it into sleep mode, although I don't use a screen saver and instead just have in Energy Saver settings having the monitor go to sleep.

 

You might also see what messages you have in the Console just prior to these problems. Unfortunately issues like this don't always show themselves in console messages but you may get lucky and be able to at least see what is occurring just before the problem happens.

Then I used XxX_x86_10.5.6_Install_Disc_Universal_Final.v2 to install OSX.

This is by far the easy way to get it running at once without any mod after install.

Before install I first have to partition my HD with Apple's Disk-Utilitythe with a GUID-partition. I made two partitions.

It is realy rock solid and steady. I've installed CS4, Logic Pro Aperture and so on.

No problems at all, no KP, no abnormal restarts or whatso ever.

why not a vanillia install?

the hassle is installing chameleon (a simple installer)

add efi string (very simple to do), copy the apple.boot.plist into the extra folder...restore the old one...

and copying kext to the extra folder at the root of osx...

(and disable sleep Hard disk if using IDE)

that's it ... I don't see that as a major hassle at all...

 

but the good part is that 10.5.7 is coming out soon, and with retail install it's a simple matter of using the "Software Update", nothing else to do (of course the guaranty that it will be the case is not 100% but I'd say it's close to 99%), compared to the widly used kalyway, ideneb, etc... the update process is a little more painful... I dont' know about XxX but I hope it's easy for you...

 

sure my system isn't yet 100% fully working, but it works better than using any modified distro

(and the issues are of very minimal importance for most of us...)

... want proof ? connect a usb flash drive, sleep your system, wake it up and you'll see the bad surprise... (this is fixed with our vanilla install, well kind of )

by having a vanilla install it's also easy to play with kext, to figure out problem, because we know exactly what modification we did to the system... once the testing phase is over, it's a simple pack of kext to simply copy in a folder (no need to care about permission or anything of that sort)...

and we are at this point...

 

that was my two cents..

anyway it's your machine do whatever you wish... and I don't know how XxX distro was modified, maybe it's a great distro...

so it's just an advice...

I agree, the holy grail for hackintosh owners is to use the retail disk and get our machines as close to vanilla as possible. The distros may allow for an easier time to get you up and running but the ever dreaded Software Update might kill you in no time flat.

But all updates from Apple work fine! haven't had any issues yet.

The only little thing is that my CPU-temp varies from core to core.

The first is ± 10 degrees warmer than core 4. I think I have to check the cooler and aply some new thermal stuff.

Any way the release of the Installer I used is great for me. It's in my opinion also vanilla as you also have to install extra kext to get thing work proper.

But I think you guys are doing great work. When Snow leopard comes I'll give it a totaly vanilla install. At least I'll try!

You should not have any problem if using retail install and if you have it like gmacman and I have it setup:

absolutely every modified kext in the Extra folder (either in a mkext or in the Extra/Extensions folder)

For now I have realtek in the Extra folder, but if it's in S/L/E, it should not interfere with the update...

and using my latest pack... one page before this one

 

and the most important kext to have are dsmos and disabler, or similar to those

this is kind of "normal" with quad core, well at least with the Q6600, that I also have...

I have reinstalled this cooler zalman 9700 at least 4 times over the Q6600 in the last year and used two different motherboards (I changed it to get OSX on this machine), and always had this temperature difference of about 8~10°C between core 1 and core 4

 

as of right now overclocked to 3.2, and running at full speed (3D rendering for the last 13hours)

core 1" 59

core 2: 54

core 3: 51

core 4: 52

 

(I just took the motherboard out of the case, I sold the case and waiting for a better one in term of airflow, it's in the mail now, so the cooler slid a little over the cpu and I could possibly get a better temperature difference between core 1 and 4 than what I have now by reinstalling it)

 

I know it's weird , but I don't beleive you'll ever be able to set up your cooler in order to have all four temps identical... by reinstalling it you may get a smaller difference between core 1 and 4 ... but I'm sure it will still be over 6°C in difference ... so don't break your head over it...

 

when running at semi-idle (web-browsing, music listening... etc) the difference may get closer to 10°C because usually the system uses the first core over any other, so core1 will always be a little hotter...

 

if you google that you'll see we are not the only ones...

I only have a power supply with 4 pin for processor. (I need a 8pin power supply?)

You technically don't, but it cut down on some erratic startup behavior when I connected a power supply with an 8pin 12v ATX2.2 connector. YMMV

 

i'm sure this topic has been beaten to death, but i've never had any problem using a 4 pin connector with 8 pin motherboards. you just have to be careful to choose the right 4 pins.. the motherboard manual should give more info on this.

there's a version that sells for 50$ online... plus you need to get a 120mm fan separately

so if you plan on overclocking that's what I would suggest, but you need to be sure it fits... because it's HUGE... if I sell my Zalman 9700 that's what I'll get... on average the TRUE is about 10°C cooler than my zalman9700, which is not negligible...

 

And about OSX 10.7.0... when it comes out I'll use the combo update and see what's happening!

kalyway did not include that... that's why updating was not just a simple software update...

so be sure one of these is included somewhere in your system (probably in S/L/E), then I don't think you'll have any problems, if you don't then I would add it,

but you see if you start doing some "hacking" the retail install just feels better as a playground...

after installing, during the first run, it should ask you if you want to install somekind of plugin for intel cpu temperature, if you refused it then you won't get cpu temp...

or could it be because of the Xeon...
