I have a macbook pro and a home-built hackintosh. I am completely aware that I am probably breaking a few rules that Apple sets forth regarding their OS. I find it funny that Netkas is mad about these people stealing his work when originally he did something that Apple would consider stealing of their work. People who worship these hackers like Netkas are probably going to rip me a new one, but I don't care. I appreciate all the hard work he has put in to helping me run OSX86 on my computer, but I also realize it is all for fun and that we are all guilty of "breaking the law" or EULA.

I think Pystar is just trying to make a profit until Apple shuts them down. They know theyre gonna get shut down, but I'm sure they also are making some sort of decent profit. Think of all the exposure they have gotten in the last few weeks.

don't be a self-hating osx86 user

I'd like to see eventually Apple's hardware like cpu's motherboards, video cards etc being sold on newegg. all we need is able to buy apple :) components separately so we can build real macs instead of hacks - I bet this would reduce hacks and apple increase sales.

I think the real question now is this:

Why does Apple appear to be tolerating Psystar?

...

What is going on?

I can't stop thinking about this. And I think this is the real issue we should be discussing here, instead of tech specs.

Unless I am mistaken, the Gigabyte G31M-S2L motherboard price from some major online retailers has gone up since the news of G31M-S2L on Open Computers was out by Engadget and Gizmodo. Quite a disturbing effect of commercialism. I hate this. No one plays nice.

I don't think that these people should be doing this, I want to build my own Hackintosh for just the thrill of building a computer and exploring the OS. I think the whole thrill of having a Hackintosh is the fact that it is your own note some store bought PC. I think that they should stop, I mean anyone could just build a computer and install OS X on it and sell it. they've taken all the OSx86 communities hard work and turned it into a company.

I don't like it at all.

There's nothing stopping you from building your own. I think it's a great idea (then again, I wasn't one of those who worked hard to create OSx86)

It gets people aware of this site. It's sort of like RedHat and Linspire. They sell Linux even though it's available free and many people put in unpaid

hours on it. Of course if the OpenMac takes off, the OSx86 club wll not be exclusive anymore. It's probably time for some people here to learn to be

a little more patient since there will be many more noobs coming in who need help. Noblesse oblige, ya know!

No wonder its so loud, theyre using EVGA. I have a 7600gt with the exact same cooler, and it does NOT throttle the fan speed in Windows or OSX, it stays at 100% all the time. EVGA is complete garbage (atleast for their low end cards) and are one of the only manufacturers to not include a fan that can spin slower on all their cards. The fan on that thing is insanely loud, atleast 4-5 times louder than the Intel stock fan on its highest speed. I had to disconnect the fan, remove the heatsink plastic cover, and place a case fan on it because it was driving me crazy and there was no way I could use the computer with that much noise. I can say with complete confidence that the reason this thing is so loud is because of the piece of {censored} EVGA video card, people should hear the fan on that thing in person, you simply have not heard a loud fan until you hear a low budget EVGA card.

Psystar needs to change that video card or theyll have a lot of angry customers.

It is really hard to imagine Apple continuing to tolerate Psystar.

If Apple does, we will see a lot more people selling OSx86 based Mac-clones and commercial grade OSx86 distributions would be developed. Cloners would invest in the development of perfect OS X drivers for the specific motherboards they support and provide one-click software updates for their OSx86 distributions. In short, I think it would lead to near perfect Hackintoshes and over the long term, OSx86 could challenge Windows.

But at this point in time, the idea that Apple (and in particular, Steve Jobs) would let the future of OS X and the Macintosh line fall into the hands of primitive market forces seems totally absurd. If Apple wanted OS X to be unleashed now, Apple would simply license OS X to Dell, Sony and/or HP under strict conditions that Apple controlled.

However, if Apple fails to file a lawsuit against Psystar or least make some kind of statement to the effect that it will not permit Psystar to violate its EULA in the near future, it might be safe to say that OSx86 has entered a new commercial age (which, again, is hard to imagine actually happening).

Well we´ll just have to wait and see any guess is just as good and in the end who knows maby they don´t see Psystar as a threat at all. I mean the noise that puter makes who´d pay money for that. Could even be they´re testing the market see how far people wold go just to be able to afford a Mac clone. I don´t think we´re gonna notice any difference here as long as we keep buying the software we use in our hacks.

So to what extent does the GMA3100 work? I was under the impression it's VESA only? If you check their site, it's now listed as coming with GMA3100 instead of GMA950. Unless, that is, you opt for a healthy shafting of $110 for an 8600GT. It's a royal shafting if you consider you can get a 256mb XFX 8800GT for $99 AMR on newegg. Is the fact that the integrated graphics don't work supposed to be an incentive to get ripped off even more?

Also, if you check under support then open computer updates, you should find a new page with fixes no doubt mostly lifted from this site and then re-hosted. So to those who develop fixes and safe updates, prepare to have your work stolen and used to fatten these idiots wallets  They obviously troll these forums to keep their cobbled together garbage "working", mostly anyway...

You are right. GMA 3100 is supported as VESA on Mac OS X. I think it's a pathetic attempt
  • to get rid of future customer complains for glitches of GMA 950 and
  • to make few more bucks by selling the cheap nVidia 8600GT cards as a de facto default choice.

They also switched the case for Open Computer from ASUS TM-210 to ASUS TM-982. It's also a desperate attempt

  • to make more money in cost of customer satisfaction; TM-982 is actually cheaper in cost and worse in customer reviews than TM-210.

I don't think they have a wholesale contractor who steadily supplies parts after all. They seem to change parts based on retail market prices in direction of either cheaper in cost or larger in profit margin.

It really amazes me that this two-men-operating (The Pedraza brothers) company (and one woman who apparently receives phone calls) can survive this long. They should hire more people if they care about quality of their "products", ever. I start wondering if this company pays taxes.

Nah, old news.

On one hand this is ' enterprising ' .. A couple people see an opportunity in a market and exploit it using the most common of parts and the tools available to any 3rd grader on the internet. However that being said the MSM is treating this like Psystar is the 2nd coming - they've been compared to , and blown up as a full on manufacturing plant like Dell. In reality its just a couple schmo's who probably read a forum posting, downloaded a kalyway dvd and read the compatibility wiki a little bit.

I priced out roughly the same config here in canada, and I came up with 417 pre taxes, and thats with the fugly case, cheap ass psu and low end motherboard (although I used an s2c, its pretty much the same at 56 dollars.)

People. Hackintosh's are easy - this should never be this mainstream because apples feathers are going to get severely ruffled. At the very best I hope they come out with a slightly upgradeable, headless mac with a pcie and a couple slots (like a shuttle sized apple cube 2) at the very worst they'll sick their legal army out to everything that has to do with osx on x86 and crush everything.

It is odd that at the moment it appears to be tolerated. but you never know.

You won't be able to use all 4 memory sticks on that motherboard. By the way, what's the currency? Canadian dollars?

Yeah.. from ncix.com - I just whacked together a cheap system based on what they had.. I didn't know about the 4 sticks, its 2x2 then on that board correct?

All I did there though was run a price test for compatible hardware in a matter of minutes.. the average joe should be able to peicemeal a system like that. I prefer my p35 Blood Iron t2rl tho.. fantastic motherboard.

Yes, the specifications from the 945GCM-S2C manufacturer say it supports 4GB. Google says 1 CAD = 0.98 USD, so I guess your figure is already rightly converted to compare with Open Computer. I wonder how much the tax is in Canada... ;)

Specifications are one thing, - but I notice you have the 945gcmx2 - the very same one I had, and it supports 4 gig just fine in osx. I had 2x2gig ocz cold pc6400's in there and osx saw and used it all.

Windows on the other hand.. horrifically unstable when dual booting. :)

That's exactly why Gigabyte does not claim in specifications 945GCMX-S2 supports more than 2GB. :)

Long time no see, Onetrack. I used your guide to build my hackintosh.

Ahh you bet, I am still around lurking :(

I got a bit hammered with ' help me help me my amd laptop doesn't boot when i use your guide ' that i kinda stopped coming around for awhile.

I sold my gcmxs2 and picked up a dfi blood iron.. it is a fantastic motherboard - i'm really happy with it.

(up to 8 gig now, and overclocked to 3ghz on air rock stable for months.)
