I'd consider using this board - what kind of RAM are you using?

And what kind of audio does it have?

  • 3 weeks later...

I have the ASUS Z7s board and it looks to be a great board.

The Good

1. It has enough PCI-express 16 slots.

2. 6 RAM slots 8 would be better but 6 is more than 4.

3. 2 x Firewire, 8 x USB, 6 x SATA ports and 2 x E-sata ports.

4. Dual Gigabit NIC ports.

The Bad

1. BIOS :)

The problem is the BIOS. I had to remove both 5410 processors and install a 5310 to flash the bios to 4.01 to get the board to post at all. Once flashe I replaced the 5410 and it posts fine. With this all done I tried all the release of Leopard and no luck getting them to load with all 8 cores.

I have had the board for about 5 days and it is coming along. I thought I would share with others my experience with the board. I spoke with ASUS and they are sending me another BIOS flashed for the 4.01 because I told them I could not get the board to post which was true but came up with the idea of trying a 65nm chip which is not the low coltage 45nm 5400 series. This enabled me to play with the board over the weekend and this is where I am now. Shanems3 I see you have gotten it too work. I have tried about every bios option off with no luck. I can turn off ACPI in the BIOS and it gives me a single processor. This is BAD.

The Asus looks like a nice board. I eventually went with the SUPERMICRO MBD-X7DCA-L and 8 gigs of memory and two E5340 @3GHz's and a 9800GT. I have iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5 installed really with no issues. Occasionally i can't boot into OS X, i have to do a restart then it works, i'm dual booting with Vista. It's a pretty good Mac Pro equivalent on a budget. I use it for 3d work, the benchtests i have done using Cinebench are pretty much up there with the new Mac Pro's. My total was under $1500.

Well after a few problems I have an 8 core 6GB RAM 3TB storage Hackintosh Pro. The BIOS is a real problem so I installed the latest EFI v9 and patched the DSDT with DSDT patcher (Great Application) to get all cores to show up and installed the ACPI fix. I am looking into patching the DSDT to fix the ACPI problem but I have 8 cores of sweetness.

Video is working at 1920x1080 in 42" LCD

Audio is working in and out, as well as Digital out.

Dual Gigabit I have to install the drivers but I am using a cheap PCI gigabit card for now that works.

restart and shutdown are working with no errors just like a real Mac.

Deep sleep with EFI works just waking is a problem. :)

Geekbench score 7012

Next step pump up the clock to 1600 and see what happens.

This machine really runs well. I will be using Final Cut Pro to see the true fruit of my labor this weekend. :yoji:

Hi guys,

I am new on this forum, so 1st of all : hello world ;-)

Well, now that it's done, Hi Stevejobsubs !

You plane to build your own Mac Pro: good idea ! That's what I've done and itis a joy of every day !!!!

In fact, the way I followed was a little fifferent, because I use 2cpus graphic stations for about 10 years now, since my dual pentium III (wich still working !).

But I was frustated : my render jobs for my 3D scene were no so fast as I was figured and I had to compose with Windoz Freeze, BSoD when phisically memory totaly used (Vray issue) aznd other stuff like that....

Well one day, after trying XP, 2003 sever, and differents distro of Linux, I said to my self "why not trying leopard ?" and I tried.....

In one word.... WOW!!! Waht a smoothing feeling when working on my textures maps on Photoshop with Maya one the other screen to visualize the render.

Sorry for everyone who made true but not reallistic additions, and good news for your : your Hackintosh Mac Pro doesn't have to cost you nearely the price of an original one... not at all.

Keep in mind that the price of this kind of hardware take in count the service which is proposed with (for xeon à >$1200 for exemple)

I have only one thing to say : eBay is your friend: I bought my motherboard for about 100euros and a couple of 5335 for the same price. (search for asian ebayers)

My FB-Dimm came from Australia and It was the same story (aboput 120 euro for 4x1 Gb)

Last point about the price : as the technologie used for this generation( core / socket 771) will be soon out of date, why don't try 5000X chiopset instead 5400 : ok, the limit FSB will be 1333 and not 1600, but, at this speed, is it clearely a justification of spending more money ? I don't think so. But there's allways guys to compare ferrari and lamborghini...

Just in case you choose 5000 chipset, be sure to choose a 5000X (Greencreek) chipset wich is for workstations (PCIexpresse x 16 graphic port for exemple).

Other chipset arte for Servers.

Well price is one thing, compatibility is another one. The good news is that dual xeon platforms are 100% intel, so good for Mac OS compatibility

I must say that I have a little preference for Supermicro's motherboard.

I used Gigabyte, Tyan, iWill (RIP) and Supermicro is alway far on the top of my preferences :

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon1333/

So, in conclusion, here are some of the spec of my "Mac Pro" which work perfectly with a iAtkos v1.0 installation, 10.5.5 updated.

Supermicro X7DA8

2 x Xeon 5335 (Quad - 2GHz - 1333 - 4x2MB) with passive heatsink Thermalright HR-01 X

4 x 1 GB FB-DIMM 533 (HP)

9600 GT 512 MB GIGABYTE Passive

320 GB (16MB) HDD Samsung F1 spinpoint

500 GB (8MB) HDD Hitachi

I could give you more info if you want.

(Sorry for my english I'm french)

The Z7S has dual 771 Xeons not 775 that is the difference.

Wouldn't it just be cheaper and smarter to buy an i7 based mobo/cpu? The i7 quad-cores are equal to those of an octo-core current mac pro socket 775. Go check the geekbench scores.

-Stell

I have bumped my Quad cores to 3.00 GHZ with no external cooling other than stock fans with no issues with stability or heat. I can go more but I believe I will have to change voltage to go higher. Went to 3.2 GHZ and would crash with no voltage change. The 3GHz is fine for me with no issues :)

Any of you guys tried overclocking your Quad-core Xeons?

How about Asus DSEB-DG/SAS?

It has LSI1080 8port RAID controller with 1E raid function. Four G-Lan and support for 800mhz FBDimm (for 1600 fsb processors only).

Add two E5462*2 (E5472*2), 8GB of RAM (or more if you wish), Samsung HDD's (if you do not like samsungs, take any other).

Of course, add Case and PSU.

And then compare this setup with XSERVE.

XServe:

Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
2GB (2x1GB)
Xserve RAID Card
1TB Serial ATA ADM @ 7200-rpm
1TB Serial ATA ADM @ 7200-rpm
1TB Serial ATA ADM @ 7200-rpm
ATI Radeon X1300 64MB SDRAM with VGA Adapter
8x SuperDrive DL DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Dual-channel Gigabit Ethernet card with PCI Express x8 riser
Dual 750W Power Supplies
Rack Mounting Kit - Square Hole Rac

Subtotal: $6,649.00

My setup:

630	  -> MOBO
1080*2 -> CPU
78		-> RAM
100*3   -> HDD
433	  -> CASE
698	  -> 2U PSU
100	  -> SLIM DVD-ROM

Subtotal: 4399$ + 999$ for Mac OS Server = 5400$

And now the best part. Yep, i know that XSERVE is a 1U, but i do like 2U better for better cooling and less noise (XSERVE is a 59.5 decibel screamer). Think of expandability of my setup and XSERVE setup... I can continue my thoughts if anyone is interested. ;-)

Cheaper yes, smarter no; it is still highly illegal - though many people I know bought their first Apple hardware after using a hackintosh installation, well... or using one of these hyped iPod/IPhone (my oldest daughter is Apple minded after getting her first iPod).

The over clocking capabilities of mainstream motherboards like Gigabyte and Asus (to name a few) are a key factor here - outperforming a real Mac can be done, and cheap these days. Note however that Mac users (in general) buy Apple hardware because they fell in love with its design - not to mention the hype when new hardware or software arrives.

Hi Guys,

My name is bas and I am new to the forum, first off all thank you for all your information! I built a hackintosh one year ago for my father using a P5E VM HDMI ASUS motherboard and a Q6600 processor. He has no knowledge of computers in this matter but the machine is running for over a year now without any problems!

But now I wanted to ask you about what you think of my new (to get) system. My brother has a Dell 1950 poweredge with one quadcore 2.33 GHz XEON 5410 for me. There is room for a second processor which I will buy when I have it. I was wondering what you think of this hackintosh and if anyone of you has experience with a poweredge running OSX86....?

So I guess this will be my hackintosh project for 2009, at least I hope it will run OSX.... Hope you guys can help me out with this. I was also wondering what te best installation method is, do you know that?

Cheers!

*bump* can anyone please help me out?

video editors sound screwed if they need a 8 core pc/mac to operate. i am an audio engineer and pro tools releases HD Cards. Each card is like adding a computer to the rig for all the plug ins and {censored}, all we need is a fast hard drive for better performance. if you are going to buy a mac pro dont leave the store without apple care, you will regret it. We had a customer leave out store with a macbook pro and 30 days later the battery just stopped working, he had to buy a brand new one directly from apple.

i know the video editing world is a different world when is comes to computer porformance, so if the core i7 and a raid 0 harddrive rig doesnt cut it, why not just go buy a real mac.

What I want to see is a current 1366 socket 8 core working with retail boot-cd. The next gen Super Micro offering for workstations (as opposed to servers) is the X8DAL-i. It is Intel 5500 (Tylersburg) based, and looks pretty compatible at first glance.

Anyone played with a 1366 8core hackintosh?

I just saw this comment while shopping... did any one verify this claim? ---> "It is fully functional with OSX 10.5.7. Grab a pair of Xeon 5520s, load it with RAM and a PCIe video card of your choice, add a USB sound stick (Turtle Beach

Audio Advantage comes to mind) and a USB wifi adapter, and it is a beast of a system."

Thank you

This user purchased this item from Newegg

Pros: Very stable board. Built in BIOS recovery / update tool works well. 12 DIMM slots supports gobs of RAM.

Cons: Built in sound would have been nice even though its a server board.

Other Thoughts: For the adventurous looking to put together an excellent Mac Pro alternative, consider this board. It is fully functional with OSX 10.5.7. Grab a pair of Xeon 5520s, load it with RAM and a PCIe video card of your choice, add a USB sound stick (Turtle Beach Audio Advantage comes to mind) and a USB wifi adapter, and it is a beast of a system.

Heya Gramarye,

let me take it a step further for you.

I just got finished installing the 10.5.2 update and everything still works perfectly, I also installed the additional graphics update and it works perfectly as well!

My geekbench scores are up to 7279 now which is a slight increase, however I think thats because in profiler it still shows the NVinject 0.2.1, so I may have missed something there, I am not sure if any of the release drivers are actually working or not?

I am lost there and will need to do some more reading, but yes everything workls still, my pro apps are still fine after the update.

The only thing not working now is my PS-2 keyboard, so I am typing this from a USB keyboard, other than that it is still flawless.

That picture you posted is NOT my motherboard.

This one is:Click This for Pic

Also YES everything I have is listed in my signature, and as afar as costs are concerned, thats a tough one.

I paid $500.00 for the mobo about 6 months ago, I paid well over $400.00 for 4 gigs of FB Ram, I paid over $400.00 for the video card, and the processors were close to $1000.00 each when I got them, the Antec case was about $300.00 with the dual PSU's which total 1200 watts combined but this case is so well worth the money as it has a large 200mm fan on the side cover which is silent and blows air directly on the entire mobo, it also has (2) 150mm fans on the top of the chassis which draw air into the case and it has (2) 120mm fans on the rear of the case for removing air, all of the fans have a 3 speed switch on them and I run all fans on low, finally it has a 120mm fan that draws air in directly in front of the hard drive cage as well as a 120mm fan which blows air over the PSU's.

It is by far the best case I have ever seen anywhere and was easily the best money I have spent.

Keep in mind I have a dual opteron system sitting next to me as well that I also put into one of these chassis so that should say something about the build quality.

So far this is one hell of a system, I imagine I have well over $4000.00 into it but I still think that you can build one for way less than I did now that the newer stuff is out.

One last thing,

This Antec P-190/1200 chassis allows you to power the motherboard, DVD drives, and hard drives off one of the PSU's and ALL of the fans and video cards off of a separate PSU, the PSU's are linked with a special cable which is supplied, and the cable management is the most superior cable management I have seen to date......and I build a LOT of computers.

Thanks for your info ,146$ is the price for Tyan S2696 in China on Taobao.com, and the S5392 is 175$, so your xeon-dual processor Hackintosh works pretty good in China. But I still want to know if it still stable when you use

 Leopard (Retail) DVD and Chameleon 2.0 RC1 method. I think if it works good, it may be the perfect Mobo for installing Leopard on Xeon Mobo. By the way could you try the Leopard server edition?

Motherboard is a Tyan S2692 with a pair of LV (low power) Xeons

Video is an E-VGA 8800GTS 320MB using GFX string

4GB FB-DIMMS (2x2GB)

BIOS settings are pretty much stock. I don't remember changing anything too important. The nice thing about this board is not only does sleep work but it will wakeup via key/mouse event which is something I could never get working on my previous hackintosh (had to use the power button)

It's been pretty much flawless. I want to replace the video card with something cooler. The 8800GTS is just too much of a power hog.

I used JAS 10.5.4 and then updated to 10.5.5

What type of LV xeon are you using in your Tyan S292? Does Xeon 5148 work?

Do you think this set up can also intall by using retail leopard and chameleon?

Thanks for your infomation!

In case anyone cares, yes, dual 1366 works

X8DTH-6F with pair of E5520's here.

Onboard 6Gb/s SAS (LSI 2008) doesn't work yet..... (Any ideas?)

But my AOC-USAS-L8i (LSI 1068e based card) works great.

vladthebad, thanks for the info.

On your LSI 1068e card, are you able to RAID drives in the card's BIOS & then have

OS X see them. I'm not able to get OS X to see any drives that I RAID in my LSI

1068e card's BIOS. Any tips?
