Finally after a long wait, KDE 4 has been released today (Friday 11th of January 2008). The long awaited release of KDE 4 brings major improvement to the KDE libraries including the new phenom multimedia frameworks, major new capabilities to the desktop including panel, menu and widgets on the desktop as well as a dashboard function. KDE 4 applications have also seen visual improvements due to the new vector based artwork and changes in the underlying libraries. Also the new Oxygen Artwork provides nearly all the user-visible parts of the KDE desktop and applications a facelift.

Lets hope this one is better than the previous one which I thought was very unfriendly, unlike gnome. But thats just my opinion.

Now I can't wait for PCLinuxOS 2008 with KDE4.

IMHO I would marked this release as KDE 4 RC x and KDE 4.1 as the final version.

But that's just me.

It is basically true. Here is what Aaron Seigo had to say about it:

Also, Kubuntu and openSUSE LiveCDs available:

The openSUSE one is installable.

I know KDE "will never be finished", but the should have atleast polish it..c'mon, we're taling about a major release here, why give it a bad start? They have put an enormous amount of efforts in this release, but the lack of fit and finish and the overall polish will hurt KDE's image percieved by regular windows users wanted to switch.

KDE 4.1 should be a bugfix release IMO, consolidating features already appeared in release 4.0

Other than this little misconception, it is really promising, and let's hope for the best! :thumbsup_anim:

Hmm. Well, I haven't installed it but going on what I see with http://kde.org/announcements/4.0/screensho...ngs-kickoff.jpg :

* What the hell is their obsession with ultra-large icons? The stuff in System Settings is OK, but Dolphin, the icons at the bottom of the K menu and so forth are a total waste of space. I hope they can be adjusted, but I'm a major fan of sensible defaults, and even if adjustable, these aren't sensible defaults and just require more tweaking.

* Taskbar is still way too large. I guess that {censored} about having not locked down the appearance in the betas was rubbish. Probably adjustable, but one more thing to have to tweak by the end user. Sensible defaults please.

* Taskbar clock looks ugly and out of proportion.

* System Settings looks almost identical to OS X, IIRC. I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Definitely needs more polish for a .0 release, but hey, the technical improvements are certainly to be congratulated (less resources and such.) Still, having removed Linux on my system now due to the fact it's not sufficiently better than Windows or OS X for me, I'll probably miss the train.

Agree completely!

Thanks. I was hoping to not sound entirely flamey, which could have come off since I don't even use Linux anymore. :)

I still have a soft spot for the OS, but my observations are merely as an end user. I feel it's necessary to be blunt about certain aspects of a GUI if people want to compete with something like OS X or even Windows. Helps in the long run instead of pussy-footing about.

EDIT: I read elsewhere that the taskbar size is NOT adjustable, or maybe the guy just didn't find the right option. Can anyone confirm?

EDIT: I also read that many features are not going to be ready until 4.1. Why would you release it now in a semi-broken state then?

I used it for a while and am very impressed with the scroll bar. It is just so awesome...

The large icons at the bottom of the K menu are probably needed as it jumps to that tab when you mouse over it, and it is pretty hard to keep your cursor moving through a very tiny area, especially when you are using a trackpad or a very insensitive mouse or something.

I guess why the taskbar needs to be that large is to fit the multiple desktops icons in it... and anyway the taskbar takes up the same amount of space as OSX's dock, so I'm not complaining.

I do agree that the taskbar clock is too large... It seems that the sizes of stuff are not properly balanced.

But the whole feel to using it is still rather user friendly and eye pleasing, in my opinion

I toyed around with the openSUSE KDE4 LiveCD last night. Sorry OSS guys, but you should be ashamed of yourselves. It appears the the open source community has finally stopped pretending that they aren't imitating Microsoft/Apple. Just about every single thing in KDE 4 is stolen from Windows Vista or Mac OS X. I will say that it IS much more stable and faster than KDE 3.5 and KDE 4 betas were, but at this point, there's no reason to use KDE 4. I love Linux stuff; I run a Redhat-based LAMP server at home, and I triple boot Leopard-Vista-Kubuntu on my desktop. I don't see a reason to use Linux on my desktop any more; I could use the free knockoff of Vista/OSX, or I could just use the real thing.

Too bad, I avoided most of the KDE 4 betas and hype, hoping for something truly revolutionary. Instead, all I got was the most polished Vista imitation out there, but at the end of the day, it's still a Vista imitation. I'll stick with KDE 3.5 on my Kubuntu machine.

I'll stick with KDE 3.5

Me too, but not because 4.0 is a Vista imitation. Because KDE 4 is a usability and (lack of) configuration/features/integration nightmare.

Heck, even Xfce4 is a lot better from that point of view.

Please friends, OSS developers, understand that the typical Linux user doesn't want plenty of eye candy, but usability and integration with apps which work. From this point of view KDE 3.5 is one of the best Desktop Environments ever.

Hmm. Well, I haven't installed it but going on what I see with http://kde.org/announcements/4.0/screensho...ngs-kickoff.jpg :

I agree. I was looking forward to this for a long time, but it is true that there are even LESS configuration options in this than in 3.5. As far as usability, KDE 4 has A LOT of features I- 1)don't find useful at all and 2)don't even know how to use. But I still keep it on my triple boot of Vista, Leopard, and kubuntu solely because it is most secure and has THE BEST torrent clients (i.e. deluge, ktorrent)

Is it just me or is KDE 4 a downgrade from KDE 3.5? :P
It seems they were trying to go more for GNOME's system of "let's assume the user is a complete idiot and hide all the useful options from them." Of course, let's not forget the shameless ripoff of Windows Aero on their start menu and windows. It's a disappointment, but could be fixed with a lot of work. Like all open source software, it was rushed out the door way too soon.
I'm a fan of KDEmod myself.

You'll have to use the best Linux distro to get it, but is that really a bad thing?

KDEmod

KDE on steroids for Arch Linux

Would you honestly recommend Arch Linux to your granny? Or even to Joe User?

If the answer is no, it can't be the best Linux distro, it can only be a distro for ubergeeks.

Linux IS for ubergeeks. Your average SuSE or Ubuntu user doesn't learn Linux at all. They learn how to navigate whatever GUI is presented to them, but what fun is that? The people that really enjoy Linux are those that learn how it works.

That is true of every OS. Most Windows or OS X users have no clue of the inner workings. They need just an OS to use.

OTOH I have known even famous developers (including Linus) who have moved to easier distros: even they want to be "just users"!
