EURIKA it works now cant recall exact steps so re installing but I think with switchres I was removing to many resolutions which stuffed thing up will repost with exact how to soon

Hi, what did you do? I have this exact same problem, on my X3100, Acer Extensa 5220 laptop. The white-blue (which slowly fades off to white), with a black stripe on the middle. I sometimes get it to boot by rebooting, going on safe mode (-x), and then rebooting again normally, but this doesn't always work..

Just a heads up. I'm working on getting a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 to 100% (or close).

2ghz C2D version (which is apparently rare, even Lenovo doesn't seem to know about it!) with the X3100. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. More and more I was getting blue>black/distorted screen.

Adding "Graphics Mode"="1280x800x32@60" to the boot options fixed it. Boots up every time perfectly with no paperclips, extra monitors, tricks, or sleeping. Full hardware QE/CI.

I'm a little surprised it was that simple!

hey i have a dell 1525 with X3100.

i can install leopard fine and all but when i boot in to it all i get is a blank screen (after grey loading screen)

what do i do???

I have the same issue. Sleep trick is working, I can see that by the backlight, but no display.

If I reboot in single user mode and delete the AppleIntelGMA* and AppleIntelInt* kext I can boot into VESA.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1525 w/ X3100@1680X1050 and everything else is working, but no QE/CI!

Vendor: Intel (0x8086)

Hello,

I am a total Noob to the world of Mac and just installed Kalway 10.5.2 on a mini desktop computer (almost the same specs as a Mac Mini) and then upgraded to 10.5.3. My computer is using the x3100 graphics chip but I can't get it to displan more then 1024x768 and I would like it to be at 1280x720. Can anyone point me in the direction where a noob can get some help. If you need more info from me just let me know and I will get it. Everything works great on this computer I just want to get the resolution up as I am a photographer and need the screen space. Thanks!

Okay, here's a problem I haven't seen addressed yet...

I'm using iDeneb OSX 10.5.5 on an Acer Extensa 5620 (see sig for more details).

My X3100 works great- Hardware Accelerated, Quartz Extreme, 144MB VRAM shown, all resolutions available. Haven't noticed any glitches, tearing, etc (though I'll try playing a DVD later and report back on that). Here's my issue: randomly when I go to turn my HackBook on, the following happens:

1. OSX will begin to load (grey apple with spinner)

2. Sometimes the blue screen pops up momentarily

3. The entire screen goes white with color distortion

At this point, I have to crash it and try rebooting. OSX is still running, but I can't see it. Sometimes it will do it once. Sometimes five times. Sometimes it boots in flawlessly with no problem. There doesn't seem to be any logic to it. When it does boot it, it's perfect. It just won't do so reliably. Something on bootup video-wise is hit-or-miss, it seems. Anyone have a clue what this might be? Except for the webcam and this glitch, my budget HackBook now functions 100%

Well, I have the same problem with a Extensa 5220, read the previous page of this post. I found that, if you kept moving the mouse (a USB mouse I use, not sure about the trackpad) while the system booted, this didn't happen - or at least the screen didn't go weird when I did so.

I set Graphics Mode at boot.plist, and so far it hasn't crashed that way.. but due to the randomness of the problem, I'm not 100% sure.

@iamzenitraM: Thanks for the quick reply! I guess I was blind not to see your previous post...

I'll try the boot.plist trick. The touchpad seems to work the same way as your external mouse; I can distinctly remember jiggling it and hoping it wouldn't screw up multiple times, and those times it worked fine. Leaving it alone does seem to let it mess up more often. That's... just absolutely bizarre. You wouldn't think the two things would be related. :)

Adding the resolution info to com.apple.boot.plist didn't work, unfortunately. Still getting a scrambled screen quite often when trying to boot up; tried without a refresh rate, with a refresh rate of 60, and then (having read somewhere else) tried 65. None of it made any difference, it's like it doesn't even see/use those lines. I'd appreciate any other ideas! :) '

PS: Took four tries to get into OSX this morning. How frustrating! Especially now that everything else is working (QE, DVD, Wifi, Ethernet, Webcam, Battery, Audio, etc). It seems like such a small glitch...

Still working on this issue. Here's what I figured out, odd as it is; the laptop has to be physically warm to boot properly. :)

As previously stated, the biggest problem is first thing in the morning, trying to boot up cold. In my house with AC, it can take four or even five tries before it will properly go in. Once it's been running, though, I can reboot fine. Yesterday I shut it down and left it for two hours in my warm car... afterwards it booted just fine. Later, I used it for a couple hours, then shut it off. Fifteen minutes later it still booted without any glitch. After letting it cool overnight, it went back to a scrambled screen.

Here's what seems to work.

1. If I boot into XP first for a few minutes, it warms things up enough so rebooting into OSX works fine. I guess alternatively, I could probably leave it on that scrambled display for awhile before crashing and retrying.

2. Hard reboot multiple times until it decides to boot all the way in properly.

So, I'm left wondering... since XP doesn't have this issue, is there a software thermal sensor for OSX that is freaking out? Perhaps the way that data is being reported on our Acer laptops is a bit odd? I wish I knew if it were simply defaulting to an alternate resolution, or using the wrong refresh rate, or getting corrupt data in the framebuffer... I don't have the technical know-how to troubleshoot this, but I'd be happy to try or test anything suggested!

It's too soon to be sure, but I think I got my startup glitch-screen issue solved! I installed SwitchResX and disabled all resolutions below 800x600. The scrambled screens were pretty constant ten minutes ago, but now I appear to be able to reboot all I want. Anyway, here's hoping! I'll try this for 24 hours and report back.

If this is indeed the solution, you would think there'd be a better way to remove the incompatible lower resolutions besides buying a $15 shareware program. Can displays use an editable kext or something?

How frustrating. ScreenResX didn't solve things. It took four tries to boot to a functional screen this morning. Next time it does it I'll try hooking up an external monitor and see if it really is a resolution issue.

iamzenitraM, did your problem go away completely?

Well, I've tried following these instructions to add the EFI strings:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=121912

Some things differed from the PDF guide, as I had to find EDID manually, for example. But so far it works properly.

When I tried to boot while moving the mouse, it always worked for me. Have you tried it?

iamzenitraM: To use the EFI strings, don't you need to have your hard drive set up as EFI instead of MBR? Or is my 3 hours of sleep last night messing up my understanding of the proccess? I use MBR so I can dual boot with XP.

Moving the mouse doesn't help me, but I have a touchpad, not an external. I thought it did for a while, but it was just random luck. You start seeing patterns everywhere trying to nail down glitches like this :)

Just now it took four tries to get in. Two scrambled screens, then two blue screens. Finally I'm here. I love my Acer HackBook, and when it's running it's rock solid... but this "waste 5-10 minutes just trying to boot up" each time is starting to drive me nuts!

No, the hard drive can be either GUID or MBR. The EFI strings are set at the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist file, which is read by either Chameleon or PC-EFI (depends on which one you have installed).

After following the instructions, the contents of my file are those:

You can try to use the same device-properties string (maybe it's the same one, being both Acer ones), and then removing the Natit.kext (or moving it anywhere else so you can restore it by booting with single user mode, -s). If it doesn't work, you can try to create one for your laptop using the tutorial on the post before, but note that things, at least on the IORegistryExplorer, you may have to explore a bit until you found something similar to the screenshots.

Or try to find a USB mouse and move it while it boots. That *always* worked for me, the system always booted, but it didn't sometimes if I moved the trackpad instead.

iamzenitraM: Thank you very very much for the reply and trying to help. Unfortunately, my system in IOReg doesn't match anything in the screenshots. The guide tells you to compare two locations that has nothing to do with each other, with no matching info. His own screenshots don't match when he tells you to compare them. I'm sure it was just miswritten, and he knows what he's talking about, but to me it has nothing to do with reality.

I tried putting your code into EFI Studio and modifying it by replacing your Base64-converted EDID string with my own. I saved, repaired permissions, and rebooted. Doing so completely killed my OSX install. No options at startup work (single user mode, etc), it just kernel panics everytime. So for now, I give up. I'm back in Windows. As soon as someone can figure out how to make OSX boot without a corrupt screen on the X3100 (and explain it in English) I'll be the first to test it out.

I guess I'm just not psychic enough currently...

I know it doesn't match the screenshots, but you have to keep searching for the section with the information that looks alike the screenshots. The information isn't on the place that is told on the docs, you have to keep looking for it - unfortunately I didn't remember to note down where it was ;)

You can try to restore the EFI string by accessing your Mac drive with Macdrive on Windows and removing the section from the plist file using Notepad..

Well, bad news for you - EFI strings don't solve this. I just booted and it corrupted once. Rebooted again, and moved USB mouse while booting, and it worked.

When the screen corrupts, the system stops working - I tried lowering the volume of the system (using Fn + Up/Down) and it didn't work (it didn't make that "bleep" sound it does).

Maybe it's something related with USB activity, try plugging and unplugging repetitively a USB device (whatever one it is) while it boots and see if it works that way.

Ok all I did was select IntelGMAX3100 from kalyway DVD and on first reboot used -s flag and edit the info.plist file in GMAX3100FB and removed the 3rd to last and 4th to last lines relating to safe boot then restarted with external monitor attached

sometimes you have to fish blindly in the left screen to drag a window over and select system preferences but it can be done then install switchx etc and install custom 1280x800

Once you have done this and it works goto /System/Library and back up your display folder this will make reinstall easy

If you ever need to install again just copy this file back before final restart following installation

I have included a copy of mine it may work on all users of this card not sure give it a try

iamzenitraM: Thanks for the reminder, I completely forgot about MacDrive! Back into OSX now, whew. I was not looking forward to trying to set everything up again

I believe I found the real issue here by using -v and watching the difference between what loads and what doesn't when the screen scrambles / crashes. When it boots to a corrupt screen, it says "GFX0: family specific matching fails display, display: family specific matching fails." I, too, can't get any system sounds or anything when it does this. When it boots in properly, it says "GFX0: match category IOFramebuffer exists." What seems wacky to me is why sometimes GFX0 is okay, and sometimes it isn't. To clarify, for me GFX0 is where my "AppleDisplay" and EDID is located in IORegistryExplorer.

I'm going to add our info and my IOReg dump to HackTrix2006's thread. Maybe he can do something with this info...
