Apple is seeding Big Sur 11.6.2 build 303, I stumbled across this one by sheer accident. 🤪

Greetings Henties

Hey @Henties, how are you?

I've just merged your topic to this current one, as this topic talks about the same thing (BS 11.6.xx updates).

Your and the others guys posts will fit well. 😀

This is Beta or RC -- not the real thing, yes?

When you give info on such macOS updates, and they are not final/RTM, please make sure to mention that. :)

He shown 20G306. The number without small letter like "b" at the end means it is Release, not Beta.

About "final", I got updates for Mojave this year so a year ago Mojave was not "final". More so BigSur.

Word playing around does not change the meaning of what I wrote. :)

I think it is understandable the way I worded it, it may not be the "best" way but this is a forum after all, not a science magazine or similar.

Okay, please see here:

Latest release 11.6.1 [2] (20G224)[3] (October 25, 2021; 22 days ago)

Notice it is 11.6.1, and the 22 days ago part.

EDIT: One more link to prove it, this is official Apple info:

I am now totally "confussed" with Apple's update "designation".  Downloaded Big Sur 11.6.2 build 311 without problems but what is it ??

303 was RC2 in other words half beta and half final.

311 don't really know what it is as it did not "reveal" anything during the download and post installation phase.

Assume it remains "PWIP" perpetual work in progress as Apple did not grace Big Sur 311 with Safari 15.2 as Apple did with Monterey 21C5045a

During all my hacking years, since SL, I have never experienced that the successor of a macOS version - Monterey - is in beta whilst that which it is succeeding is also still rocking the beta boat. Strange things happen in strange places.

My preferred daily workhorse remains Big Sur, however Monterey now also works well for me with the functionality that I require with my standard workflows, albeit only after having throttled my memory down from 3600 Mhz, to 2933 Mhz. and disabled the built. in i225-V NIC and replaced that with a PCIe DGE-560t gigabit expansion card.

@Cyberdevs I concur because Apple "describes" this latest Big Sur 311 update as a "security" improvement whereas 303 was designated by Apple as RC2, therefore I ask myself, where are we?.  For all intents and purposes I can only conclude that we are still at RC2 with BS 311. Wondering whether we will see a final release of either Big Sur and or Monterey before Xmas, however seems to me to be wishful thinking.

@Henties

Your guess is as good as mine and I'm not sure when Apple will release the 11.6.2 but it might be released by the end of December (I'm just guessing).

If you take a look at the release dates of previous updates for Big Sur you can see that Apple has released an update almost every month or so with few exceptions for some security updates that don't exactly follow that pattern.

For instance 11.0 (the first public release) and 11.0.1 (as a security update) were released on November 2020; 11.2, 11.2.1 and 11.2.2 were released on February 2021; 11.3.1 and 11.4 were released on March 2021 and 11.5 and 11.5.1 were released on July 2021.

Guys -- for God's sake, we do not use or care about your Beta updates!!

Stop posting info on those, or if you really need to at least have the courtesy to clarify this is a Beta update and not the "real thing".

Mods, merging the Big Sur Beta and non-Beta threads was a mistake, it seems.

Now lots of useless posts with Beta updates info are being added -- useless to people that do not use those, and even more useless with no designation it is info about a new Beta.

There's something weird going on with 11.6 for sure. If you use any of the tools or scripts to get the latest full Big Sur installer it's 11.5.2. 11.6 was "deprecated" and 11.6.1 was never listed.

Maybe there were issues with 11.6 and 11.6.1 which need to be resolved with 11.6.2. I guess we'll see soon enough when it's officially out.
