The whole Alexander Litvinenko thing really freaked me out. Using Polonium like that...really scary, it's like the government/Putin is trying to say "WE Killed Him!" without saying it. And then detaining the CEO of Yukos and all the other stories. There was a Time magazine cover article on the loss of civil liberties in Russia as of late. This is serious stuff.

Other than that, a really amazing country with a turbulent history, (they've endured the most amazing things, those Russians) and rich culture.

I used to think Putin was good for Russia (and perhaps he was), but I really doubt it now.

Russia certainly needed a strong leader, but my impression is that Putin is changing little in terms of the corruption and "mafia" elements which plague his country. However, I think Russia may be on the right track economically. Focusing on selling natural resources (oil), raw materials (steel) and exporting Soviet technology (aerospace and military hardware) makes a lot of sense.

But the political-economic picture is very complex and I do not think that anyone but Russians really understands exactly what is going on (I certainly don't).

Ukraine has the most beautiful women in the world... russia is close, it depends what town you live in
100% agreed

"Mafia"?? Forget about that. But really, oligarch clans have a huge impact on Putin government.

Perhaps you can explain what you mean by "mafia" here? I thought these "oligarch clans" were the same thing.

In what ways to these types of groups impact the Putin government?

I love Russian accents...no seriously. About the country I cant say much, except that it always appears to be in peril. I really wanna go there and stuff. From this thread, looks to be a beautiful country.

Hoho..i am Malaysian..but right know i'm living here in russia in Novgorod..i think russia is a hard place to go to..it's not only about the climate but the people here also.they russian don't like foreigners.they even beat the foreigners to dead..

I have heard things like this before. I have also heard the Russia is pretty racist.

Be careful. :P

I think Russia is a great land (imho the biggest country in the world!?) and it has so

much to show, very nice places like St.petersburg for example.

But the downside is that Putin is a {censored} and that they have much dirty things going

on there, like too many children living on the streets and no one cares. And much

Childporn, too.

With respect to Putin, does the Russian Constitution set any limits on how long he can remain in power?

Or can he serve as President for the rest of his life?

Putin very nice prezedent! its term terminates in 2008

It has solved many the Russian problems, for example the Chechen problem

Some problems are not solved for one day or one year (for example corruption, illegal migrations and others...)

da ya govoru po ruski

PS. 2all

You know about russia very little... i very badly know english... sory(

My question really is: can Putin be re-elected again and again?

Or is there a legal limit to the number of times he can hold the office of President?

No.

the constitution of russia

article 81

1. The President of the Russian Federation shall be elected for four years by citizens of the Russian Federation on the basis of universal, equal, direct suffrage by secret ballot.

2. Any citizen of the Russian Federation not younger than 35 years of age who has resided in the Russian Federation on a permanent basis for not less than 10 years may be elected President of the Russian Federation.

3. One and the same person cannot hold the office of the President of the Russian Federation for more than two terms running.

4. The procedure for elections of the President of the Russian Federation shall be determined by federal law.

Ok, this sounds a lot like the US Constitution, but if the translation is correct, "running" means "in a row" or in series. This means that Putin (or anyone) could take a term off and come to be elected President again for two more four year terms.

Anyways, so what is going to happen when Putin is done in 2008?

Does Putin have a succesor?

Will the "oligarchs" take over?

Is there going to be turmoil in Russia?

Forget, mafia is gone. Mafia is illegal gang, which have some illegal business. Their start, with Gorbachev and Perestroyka early in 1985. During 90th their became mo clearly to law, all their business now is fully legal.

> In what ways to these types of groups impact the Putin government?

Did you hear about Yukos and Hodorkovsky, about oil transit to Europe? That is.

> I have heard things like this before. I have also heard the Russia is pretty racist.

Sorry, but this is a nonsense. There are a lot of idiots I think in every country in some of social groups. So skin heads it’s a groups of young fascists, yes they can do a terrible things, but in generally it’s a small groups, and they active only in big cities. Russians and Ukrainians are good, ordinary European people. For example I’m a student of “NTUU” Kiev Polytechnic Institute and there are a lot of Chinese here, especially at my chair. And no conflicts between us, nothing…

> My question really is: can Putin be re-elected again and again?

No, two terms is a maximum in Russia and in Ukraine too.

> Does Putin have a succesor?

Yes.

> Is there going to be turmoil in Russia?

I recommend you visit Saint-Petersburg, this is very great city, seriously. Maybe you know, that last G8 took place in St. Petersburg.

Hoho..today at my place here there are attemps by the skinhead to beat foreign student..at my place here NNovgorod every month you will hear cases like these..

the one thing that annoy me is that they tend to attack together in big numbers..say 25 to 5..coward russians..i am not trying to start flame war with russian friends here.i am pointing out at those cowards who don't have balls to fight one by one..

to those russian who read this..i heard that long time ago russians are very nice towards foreigners??is this true??

i agree this kind of thing happen everywhere in this world..
