iTunes is not (quite) working for me either, and I'm using an SSE3 Athlon 64. iTunes will play songs and videos, but it's impossible to edit the properties of the songs/videos in your collection. I also can not get into the iTunes preferences, nor can I create smart playlists. Here's an example from a video I imported:

I've worked around this problem for now by using VLC-PPC (for some reason the x86 version crashes as soon as it starts playing.) Anybody else see a problem like this? I've installed multiple times from the same image. Sorry, I don't know which image it is - a friend gave me a burned DVD. The only other problem I appear to have is with Flash animations in Safari - sometimes they crash Safari, sometimes they just appear as a blur. Fortunately the Flash plugin for Firefox works great.

EDIT: Tried the ppc trick, and the ppc version crashes immediately on launch

SAME here. I am using AMD Athlon64 3200+ Venice with SSE3

Download Itunes 7.0.4 installer from apple.com

then open terminal and type following

cd /Applications
ditto -arch ppc iTunes.app iTunesPPC.app

Then in finder, go to applications, rename iTunes.app to iTunesUniversal.app (or something) and rename iTunesPPC.app to iTunes.app. After that, right click on iTunes.app and Show Package Contents. Double click on Contents and open Info.plist with any decent text editor. Down towards the bottom you should see this key.

<key>LSRequiresNativeExecution</key>
<true/>

Change the <true/> to <false/>, and save the file.

This Method works fine for me i have sse2 Pentium 4 2.4ghz with HT

I would reinstall 7, appzap the full install, then install 6. That's what I did.

iTunes 7 is working fine on Windows XP, however is having memory errors on MacOS 10.4.5 on the same machine. I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with ATI x300 graphics and a Pentium M 1.6GHz Processor (SSE2). The graphics have CI/Quartz with the koverg method and full resolution with Callisto 003. I have not tried the PPC method and have reinstalled MacOS completely since then because the new version QuickTime screwed with my system something fierce. I was editing movies in Final Cut Pro when system updates came up. I had done them before without problems (I knew what to stay away from) and after the system restarted I could not play back any video. MPEG, DVD, DV, H264, MPEG4, none of them would play. They all generated random errors. I could not playback video in Final Cut Pro or iMovie and the imported videos were solid green. Thts when I took all the files and burned them off on a CD and reinstalled MacOS. I am not touching updates again on this laptop unless some big breakthrough comes to fix all of this.

The PPC method works for me(for music playng, not tryed yet videos, ripping, burning synch iPod), but I experience some slowing on the whole system. I'll be back soon to iTunes 6 for sure.

Does anybody knows (also if not solve) the reason of Universal iTunes code failure? Fake code for Cupertino's intel processors? And why some MAC users experience the same problem?

Renegadeandy and meattatat:

When you say "same problem" or "same thing" are you talking about the properties of songs being gone, or the ppc version of iTunes crashing?

the problem of editing the properties of songs,

BTW, can't open perference window...

Yeah so now when i try to open itunes - it claims it cannot as the itunes library was made using a newer version of itunes.

Currently trying to use 6.0.5, any ideas.

Ok yes - did a little bit of research and deleted Ituneslibrary.data from the music folder - now my music , and itunes 6.0.5 works a charm.

Woot.

the problem of editing the properties of songs,

I found a 10.4.8 update for AMD/SSE3 that supposedly addresses this issue with AMD processors. Unfortunately I can't reveal exactly where I got it, but hopefully it'll fix my problem. Check the notes in some the 10.4.8 updates floating around and see if it mentions an iTunes preferences bug.

After chaning the Info.plist per quixos and converting the binary to PPC, I have it running.

Some things do not work due to the lack of QE/CI on my Nvidia card, but MP3 playback across the network (SMB mount and a "share my music" server) is working.

Machine specs in the sig.

Thanks for the workaround everyone, I hope a patched version arrives soon (or I get the dosh to build a new machine :D)

Fixed! Actually, applying the 10.4.7 update fixed the iTunes preferences bug. Must be something peculiar to the image we used. So grab an update and celebrate!

the

method worked great for me.

it runs really slow now though. i'm trying to convert a bunch of audiobooks from mp3 to m4a's and it's really slow. any ideas to speed it up?

What ended up working for the mp3-->aac conversion was to use fast-user switching so that I could run iTunes 6 while still having iTunes 7 installed. The files are converting at 30x now instead of 1.5x.

BTW, I'm on SSE2, JaS 10.4.6, ati x1600 graphics.

peekay_us i think has the best idea so far. he said to turn on fast user switching but leave itunes 6 on the side account and have itunes 7 on ur main and just do the converting in itunes 6 and then play them in itunes 7. great idea peekay_us.
