Of particular importance was the expecation that major revisions would not occur until early 2007 with the introduction of Santa Rosa...

Does anyone think Apple will just ignore Merom and wait for Santa Rosa in early 2007?

I suppose we'll see. All other reports are suggesting a timeframe of September 5 to the 17th for possible announcement, so this is hopeful news. Still others are suggesting anytime before Christmas...

...ah the rumor mill.

Now that Apple uses Intel hardware, I don't think they would skip a processor.

Due to Intel, they are now in direct competition with the likes of Dell, HP, Sony, Acer, and others. If these companies refresh a product line, so must Apple because now a consumer is bound to look at a Mac's hardware specs when buying because now they actually can be pitted, performance-wise, against the other corporations.

In addition to that, Apple has always been on the bleeding-edge of technology. While, I must admit, this has slown down a little (IMO, Blu-ray should at least be an option) they are still very much keen on always getting new technology into their Macs.

Expect the Macbook Pro (at least, though i would bet the Macbook also) and the iMac and Mac mini to be refreshed either this week, next week, or a combination of the two.

As an update and reference to your post, the newest Toshiba Qosmio is already using Core 2 Duo now:

Far right model. So maybe the Intel factor, the competition factor, and a hell of a lot of mac fanboy pressure, coupled with thier knowledge that even more market share is there for the taking will get Merom in the MB and MBP sooner rather than later. I hope you're right. :D

Absolutely not.

Merom's SSE4 is twice as fast as Yonah's SSE3 and it includes some new media processing instructions. This is huge issue for people running things like Final Cut Pro and Logic, not to mention the "civilian" apps. like iMovie and such.

I think it's really a matter of pricing. At what price will Intel sell them to Apple? If it is close enough to current pricing, then I think you'll see it. Elsewise, I think you'll see Apple hold off for a more significant upgrade.

Considering that Apple is selling the Mac Pro cheaper than what Dell offers a similiar machine for, we know that Apple is getting Intel cheaps cheaper than that rest of the market.

The transition from Yonah to Merom is at least as significant as one can expect in future.

Good point. You also answered a question I really didn't even think about with the SSE3 issue. I plan on running FinalCut on the MBP, so given that knowledge you just shared, I'm definitely going to wait. Many thanks for that info.

Doesn't Apple usually announce new products on Tuesdays? I heard that somewhere. Can anyone confirm?

Yea, I'm pretty sure they only update the site or release new products on Tuesday. Although they updated the site yesterday night (on a Sunday?) to include more of the "I'm a PC, I'm a Mac" ads.

Dude, do you really get those speeds?

I'm at 1.1MB per sec......what are you paying? You are about 800K faster.

Just curios....tested on their site, same as speak easy...I love that one...oh well, 1 MB per second or 1.1, sometimes 1.2 not to shabby, beats the old 380K per sec! :)
