boot with -v see if shows what its holding on

thanks, it loads all kexts, even sleepenabler and nullcpupowermanagement, I don't have this kexts on lion partition, they are on the SL partition :thumbsdown_anim:

But when I go to system profiler extensions, no nullcpupowermanagement and sleepenabler loaded...

And an other problem: It's not read out correctly my smbios file cause:

post-150972-1310980934_thumb.jpg

(with RC5 r1096 there is the model year, with newer chameleon it's empty)

I checked the boot.plist file, it's name is org.chameleon.Boot.plist and i have UseKernelCache=Yes in it.

Tried with:

<key>UseKernelCache</key><string>Yes</string>

and with:

<key>UseKernelCache</key></true>

too.

Any way to fix this?

(edit.: is that possible it loads the smbios and boot.plist file from the SL partition?)

nyolc8,

Make sure you are booting from the right drive in the BIOS. Use F12 to select the Lion drive to boot into.

Chameleon loads the kexts from the drive the BIOS is pointing to, not the drive selected from the bootloader screen.

This may sound odd, but this procedure allows preboot CDs/drives to work.

I have an HDD for Windows, and an other HDD with two separate partitions for SL and for Lion. I set the OSX's HDD to boot in BIOS. I think the problem is that I have two chameleons installed... I have one on the SL partition (this one starting with the boot menu) and one on the Lion partition with separate Extra folders and stuff. But when Lion officially comes out, I will merge the two partitions for just Lion, so maybe the problem will go away when only one chameleon will be there...

That dont work: 2 Chameleons on one hd (in different partitions). Only that one is used (also that /EXTRA) from which the system was bootet, ven if you select other boot volume in chameleon menue later.

Only on 2 HDs its possible to have different chameleon and F12 is working to select the HD and the differnet chameleon version on each HD.

Beside that (whoch chameleon is loaded) it also effects the /EXTRA usage. For my knowledge even if you select other boot volume in chameleon the /EXTRA is used from that volume chameleon started to boot.

i thought this might helped

i've been using svnx for a while to track changes in chameleon trunk (and branches)

http://code.google.com/p/svnx/

i'm too lazy to deal with command lines. :(

That's even easier, indeed; i use mainly Cornerstone, it's a power house; Versions it's also a good client;

both paid, but good investments... or hacks, if you prefer :P

I just like to mention terminal because it's available to all, svn has a good and simple help, everyone

should know the terminal basics and it's a way to force check me to check the Terminal way

Thanks for the tip, farhanito.

Two Chameleons on the same HDD (one boot1h/boot on each partition) works, but you have to choose which one to use

by setting the partition were it's installed as active and make sure that the boot0 file installed on the HDD boot sector,

is indeed boot0 and not boot0hfs. There's also a new boot0 in town (boot0md); see here for info and here for compiled binaries.

Don't trust any package that doesn't feature all the boot0 files!!

I hope the comments the others have added helped to explain what may be happening. But, just in case it's still confusing, I'll add the following:

Nothing wrong with having Chameleon installed on both partitions. That's perfectly fine and normal.

But, the BIOS is only going to "boot" into one of those partitions at the start to load Chameleon. Which one? In your case, it's the SL partition. From the information provided in the previous post, it's apparently loading your SL setup, either because it's the first partition on the drive or because it was set 'active.' The only way to 'force' Chameleon to load your Lion kexts and plists with your current setup is to set that partition as 'active.' But, that's assuming you are using the traditional boot0 booter, that prefers 'active' partitions first. If you installed what was considered the boot0hfs booter (it preferred HFS+ partitions first), you'll have to install the traditional boot0 booter in place of it. Then, set that partition as 'active.'

Complicated, I know.

But, the point I made earlier cannot be overstated: Chameleon is always going to load the kexts and plists (edit: wrong. See Azimutz's comments below.) from the partition the BIOS is pointed to. On a multi-partition drive, that includes more than simply setting the drive as first in the BIOS, but, also designating which partition on that drive you wish to boot from, as well. If both are bootable HFS+ partitions (as true in your case), the boot0hfs booter won't help you here. However, the traditional boot0 booter will allow one to set a desired partition as 'active' and tell the BIOS this is the partition we want to boot, even though there are other bootable HFS+ partitions on that drive.

Again, Chameleon will load the kexts and plists from whatever drive and partition the BIOS is pointing to, not the kexts/plists that "belong" to the system you are attempting to select in the GUI and boot.

I actually wish the later was true - that Chameleon would load the kexts/plists on the partition where the system resides by default (on non-EFI setups), unless told otherwise (via flag or something of the kind). This would eliminate much of the confusion and failed or incomplete boot issues we see here.

But, you're right, once you go to a single Lion install on the partition or even multiple Lion installs on multiple partitions on the same drive, this issue will disappear (assuming the kexts/plists are the same for all installs, so there's no conflict).

best of wishes,

MAJ

If I'm using r1096 build, it loads the Lion partition's Extra folder and stuff... I tried it: modified dsdt, boot.plist, smbios.plist on the Lion partition and things changed in Lion.

ai ai ai... this is not true!

The booter loads the Boot.plist from the partition were it's installed to, before it gets to the boot prompt and

again from the selected partition after leaving the boot prompt; if the selected partition is not the same

as the one were the booter is installed, the Boot.plist on the selected partition will override the first read.

Any boot arg typed at the boot prompt, will override any other setting.

All other files and kexts are loaded from the selected partition.

----------//----------

On a side note, i will take this opportunity to shout to the world that, from now on i will be just another face on this IM crowd.

Meaning, i will not give or announce any Chameleon support/news outside of Voodoo forums/forge and irc.

Of course i'll continue to track interesting topics and will be happy to provide any help, if and when i have free time.

So, if you guys still love me :P and like my company, you'll have to meet me there.

Stay very safe...

Oh, thanks for that clarification, Azimutz! I don't want to spread wrong information! :P

That's good to know!

So, the boot plist IS loaded from the selection and the only file loaded from the selection. Got ya.

Thanks, again, Azimutz!

best of wishes,

MAJ

If I'm using r1096 build, it loads the Lion partition's Extra folder and stuff... I tried it: modified dsdt, boot.plist, smbios.plist on the Lion partition and things changed in Lion.

This may be because the boot0 booter had changed it's role.

Originally, the boot0 file was strictly for active partitions and it was accompanied by the boot0hfs booter for those who wished to use it. Then, to simplify things, only a boot0 was built during compile and its role was determined by a configuration switch. By default, I think it was the boot0hfs role. If you wanted the other boot0 booter, you had to modify the configuration and it would produce a boot0 (yes, the same name) for active partitions.

Your r1096 build is probably using the traditional boot0 (active partitions) booter. The other build, the boot0hfs booter with the same boot0 name.

That's just my guess, AFAICT

Edit: It's generally good practice to have the same build of the bootloader on all affected partitions. No mixing, so that it's predictable.

regards,

MAJ

Hopefully this is the right place to ask... ;P

Just started using boot0hfs after running into the usuel issues of Windows not being on the "Active" partition... Of course, now I have a new problem :)

Chameleon doesn't seem to be reading my org.chameleon.Boot.plist file anymore.

Pretty sure that's what's going on since GraphicsEnabler doesn't work no more and tis the same with timeout (just sits waiting for me to select a partition) :D

Not sure what I can post to help you help me help us all (e-cookies if you get the reference :D), but here's my current setup:

Disk layout:

post-413183-1311099760_thumb.png

disk0s1: EFI partition containing Chameleon RC5 r1183, my DSDT, etc

disk0s2: Snow Leopard install

disk0s3: Windows 7

disk2s3: Lion GM (currently set as default with UUID)

org.chameleon.Boot.plist is in disk0s1/Extra/ (correct, yus?). Screenshot in case it helps somehow :S

Am I missing something blindingly obvious here or what? =/

K, just making sure. chameleon will load the plist from the bios boot partition first. Note that it *will* get reloaded from the selected boot partition again, so if there is another version there, make sure it has the GE key as well (all previous values will be thrown out).

Well, I've checked every partition for a org.chameleon.Boot.plist and haven't found one other then the one on my EFI partition

As you can see it reads my smbios.plist from the same location...

Can't find any reason why it isn't reading my org.chameleon.Boot.plist ><

Why MacBook1,1?

OK. I asked, I answer.

This name came from DSDT header. In my case it is simple mistake.

I think the bootloader should patch DSDT header on the fly according to chosen MacModel in SMBIOS.

Cosmetics? Don't think so.

hi,

noticed something under Lion GM (patched AppleHDA.kext and ACL885_889a.kext in /E/E)

Sound is ok but with chameleon > rev 1093 there appears in the logs:

Sound assertion "0 == iterator" failed in AppleHDAController at line 1047 goto Exit

No errors under SL.

Did someone notice this too?

Yes I have that also with original kext, now I'm trying with a older kext, and I got sound , but not perfect, we need a new kext for sound :)

Can't find any reason why it isn't reading my org.chameleon.Boot.plist ><

Well whatever my problem was, it appears to have been solved by upgrading my Snow Leopard install to Lion. :S

Hi!

FYI:

Cham ver 1192 and 1208 break my WIFI hardware for lion ,it also have a issue with restart, however 1078 is OK for lion.

//Peter

I have same problem on Lion, AR9285 is not working with version 1200, also panic on restart about AirPortAtheros40.kext.

I've found that Chameleon 1208 will not load Legacy (PList only) kexts from /E/E Unless i boot with UseKernelCache=No -f.

Is there a fix for this?

(N.B. I dont need to do this when i boot my snow leo partion, only my lion install)

I have same problem on Lion, AR9285 is not working with version 1200, also panic on restart about AirPortAtheros40.kext.

I also have booting problem with newer release of Cham when I used UseKernelCache=Yes

So I have removed that, is this necessary to have UseKernelCache=Yes to get LION work good ?
