I had no experience of building a PC before and followed exactly same method with exactly same components according to Stell and it worked successfully so now I am enjoying an amazingly-fast Hackintosh. Thank you so much for all the information.

I have 2 questions.

1. My Hackintosh doesn't go into sleep mode automatically. I can make it sleep from the Apple menu and the screen saver also works OK when I test it from system preference. But when the set time (10 minutes in my setting) passes, the screen just got black (with no screen saver, but it is not an issue to me) and the machine doesn't sleep. (so I can still hear the fan sound.) Can anyone help me?

2. I am going to try to install Win 7 in extra HDD. Can you help me with a detailed direction about how to do it? Can I just format the extra HDD in FAT32 and run the Win 7 DVD? Do I need any special tweak to get it installed? I've read all the posts here as well as Lifehacker article but the only information I can get is to use extra HDD and use F12 to choose boot disk. I know it is a very basic question but I'd appreciate any help about this.

So I am somewhat new to the Hackintosh game and went out and bought the exact setup that Adam has on the LifeHacker install. The only differences is that I am using an external hard drive instead of a thumb drive for the install. I have noticed that on my setup the CPU host frequency (Mhz) is not set at 266 likes Adam's is. Does anyone know if this would cause a problem?

I go to install it and it locks up at a screen with "/" flashing in the top left corner and then I get a time out error after a few minutes. Has anyone else ran into this issue? Do you think this would be caused from my CPU host frequency not matching or from it being on an external hard drive and not a thumb drive?

Video Support - XFX 7300GT

Following Lifehacker's install guide exactly yielded a running, but super loud, system. I looked for a quieter video card and grabbed an XFX 7300GT. It boots to the blue screen before desktop loads and then gets stuck in a loop. If I can't boot with this card, how do I find the device ID and other info?

anyone know how to get this card to work?

Also - Any other SILENT card suggestions?

so I know I'm not using nvidia cards and I'm getting this:

pushCPU_CSTdata - _CST evaluation failed

could anyone confirm if its related to the Vid Cards?

Why would you think that has to do with a video card? Do tell.

dunno I've been trying to get to the bottom of it, i'm a total noob, and have recently arrived to the conclusion that my DSDT needs to be customized for my specific set of hardware options (a process which seems quite advanced for me) and i wanted to rule out any other issues

I had picked up an 8800 GT card (so not sure about your original card) but the loudness in my setup came from the stock CPU fan.

I changed the HeatSink and Fan to a new XIGMATEK cooler (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003) and now my system is much quieter and cooler.

Regular XCode related Kernel Panics

I bought the exact same hardware (OK, a different case). The install and general operation went flawlessly. It is an incredibly fast machine. I even have dual 24" displays on it. This machine is rock solid, with two exceptions. First, the "double click the title bar to minimize" doesn't work on any window. No idea why. For a while I thought it was limited to Safari, but it is every window these days.

The second issue is a bit more serious.

I can make it crash (kernel panic) regularly when I am compiling code. I have XCode 3.2 for Snow Leopard installed and I had it kernel panic numerous times when compiling. This ranges from things like when MacPorts was installing things to when I compile my own (large) C++ based software. I should point out that gcc will crash frequently with internal errors and then 1 out of 10 times I get a kernel panic.

I am running the 32-bit kernel (since I don't hold down the 6+4 keys at boot). I added the -m32 flag to my gcc/g++ calls and that doesn't seem to make a difference.

I just installed the new EP45-UD3P v2 (Halloween Edition) of the automated tool to install Chameleon, etc.:

We will see how that goes.

Any ideas?

For the minimizing of the windows, did you try enabling that? It's disabled by default in Snow Leopard. You are NOT running the 32-bit kernel. This defaults to 64bit. Afaik, Macports is only x32 currently.

To run in x32, type -x32 at bootloader, or add the kernel flag to boot.plist in /Extra folder.

I believe that Newegg carries a 9800 GT (Not X+) that is completely fanless.

(Albeit I think the heatsink is huge)

Google be yer friend mate, an as I looked this card up for someone

else in this thread ye be findin on yer own. ;-) (Ahrrr)

If you're looking to install Winblows, DON'T do FAT32. It's a waste of time.

FAT32 is bloated, can't have single files larger than 4GB, and it's slow.

Go NTFS. You won't be able to write to it from OSX, but who cares. You can

still read from it. Just install MacDrive on the Windows side, it'll read the OSX partition

and even let you write to it.

Why would you think that has to do with a video card? Do tell.

*clearing throat* ....Rofl!

Google won't return his calls Stell, not his fault.

I'm in geek heaven with this project. :) I didn't think it would work so I went ahead and got an OEM copy of Windows 7 and another HD just in case. Had I know that the SL install would work so well I could have saved myself some bucks. My build is the following:

Lifehacker's Anatec case and 500 W PS

E6600 C2D @3 Ghz 9*333

Asus Silent 9600 GT

WD 640 Gig HDD

3 Gigs of old Cosair PC5400 RAM

Trendnet NIC

I installed SL with the older magic script and then installed Halloween on the MAC. The build is stable. It starts up and sleeps perfectly. System profile read all the right HW and cpu speed correctly. I picked up iLife and iWork 2009 and so far they're working perfectly as far as I can tell. I have windows 7 installed on another drive in the and both systems boot perfectly from the F12 boot menu. The Hackintosh shares my Vista 9550 Quad system keyboard, mouse and monitor on a kvm switch. I briefly tried getting a $20 RNX-EasyN1 wireless USB adapter to work. The system sees the Rosewill adapter but won't take it because it's not apple hardware.

My girlfriend would kill me if she knew I spent such a beautiful day here in the SF bay area happily geeking away but fortunately she's out of town ;)

Cheers to you my friend! Glad to hear you're in a geek safe-haven!

Where in the bay? I'm in San Carlos.

You have a separate Q9550 setup? Why not switch it into this? (too much trouble?)

Mine runs like a striped ape. :-D

I'm on the lower slopes of Mt Tamalpais in Mill Valley. I put the Hackintosh together with a spare cpu and ram that was sitting around so it was pretty inexpensive. That doesn't mean that my electronics bill isn't way out of control. When the price of the socket 775 quad cores drops I'll beef it up to 8 gigs and a 9650. What I hate about Vista is that it's always grinding the hdd. SL is nice and quiet. No background processes going on all the time. I've got a 3 family pack of Windows 7 upgrades on order. I hope my other machines upgrade to be more MAC like.

My 9550 Vista 32 machine OC to 3.4 runs wPrime in under 11 sec. Are there any bench marks for SL?

Agreed... the Q9550 screams in Snow Leopard

Migrating from 10.5.8? I'd like to migrate my settings from my 10.5.8 hard drive to my Snow Leopard hard drive, but when I ran the Migration Assistant, my Snow Leopard crashed. After a reinstall, I tried again, being very selective about what to migrate, but with the same result. Any ideas or should I just give up on this?

BTW, now have 10.6.1 running flawlessly on EP45-ED3P with Sapphire 1GB ATI 4870 using the Halloween package. My problem was that I wasn't reading all of the directions! D'oh!

Stellarolla, you rock! And many thanks!

I don't want to give anyone false hope, but I notice the new iMacs will have

ATI 4850's. I"ve seen many on here hoping for compatability.

I wonder what will come of it?

On another curiosity note, I see some people say they are using dual monitor just fine, and others saying use

only the port furthest from the S-Video connector.

I plugged mine into the other one and it works. The only time I seem to get the blue screen at startup

is if the monitor is already on during boot.

If I unplug then re-plug the HDMI cable to the DVI adapter it pops right back on.

Did you download or fix your drivers for the ATI 4870? The package only includes part of the functionality for ATI, since the drivers still need extra device ids.

I have run a utility that says my system is using the 32 bit kernel. I haven't done anything different to my booting sequence. The utility is available here:

http://www.ahatfullofsky.comuv.com/English...ms/SMS/SMS.html

I haven't run into driver issues yet ( 32 vs 64 bit )- but it may be just because I have been working too much and therefore haven't had enough time to tinker, Today ( tonight ) is my Friday!

I can't see why this utility would give erroneous feedback on the kernel bit status on a hacked Mac since we are using a stock OS X distribution.

(I could be incorrect)

I am going to try putting Leopard on a separate drive in my system - Are there any issues I should be aware of?

Can the Halloween Installer be used for this? Is there a better path?

Thanks to all ! - Thanks esp to Stellarola !

••• Update - The Utility I link to above says that i am running a 32 Kernel.... BUT The System Software Overview under System Profiler says I am running the 64-bit Kernel and Extensions - So the control of 32 vs 64 bit kernel is happening before the com.apple.Boot.plist takes effect ( this is where the GUI utility above is looking and working on...) So YES I was incorrect... ( again )

Interestingly, I did not have to do anything extra. That was, I think, my problem before. I assumed that I would have to and spent much time and energy trying to figure that out. When I finally just ran the installer (for the nth time) and let it all complete, I have a fully recognized 4870 with QE working! It doesn't look like I can change resolution, but that may be my monitor (Dell), but it's running at 1920 x 1080 and looks great. Sound is working, Ethernet is working (I disabled the second onboard LAN). Haven't checked out the FireWire card I have in, but it worked under 10.5.8 so I assume it will work now (big assumption). Also haven't tried the eSATA ports, but that's for later today or tomorrow. I'll update the forum when I've got that info.

I'm quite positive its not working for you and you just don't realize it. Maybe take some screenshots of system profiler and sys preferences pertaining to graphics/display?

Hello, I am having a problem with my hackintosh. I did a clean install using the pumpkin installer and find that my computer will not fall asleep after idling. Here is some system information:

q6600

ep45 ud3p

4x 2gb ram sticks

2x maxtor 200gb HDD

1 tb WD HDD

500gb WD HDD

ethernet card

EVGA 512 9600 gt (dual monitors)

griffin firewave

elgato eyetv 250 plus

I have tried reducing the computer to simply the graphics card, boot hard drive, mouse, keyboard, two monitors. But still I cannot get the computer to sleep after the time set in energy saver...

Any help or leads on this issue would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sometimes the auto-sleep doesn't quite work as the same time you set in Energy Saver, but it does in fact work. Just the sleep in Energy Saver to like 25-35 minutes for the hell of it. Then just walk away for an hour to see if it finally hit the sack.
