Well, you do have other options. There are still patched versions of Leopard available that a person can acquire and install. That would bootstrap you into a running OS X 10.5.x. From there you would be able to support yourself. That is what most of us have done. Give it a try.

this was my first plan, but I don't have access to a DVD burner and I lost my old 10.5 kalyway distro

Chameleon cdboot (boot132) for 10.6

by flashGX

Package:

http://www.mediafire.com/?gdjwuk2ddtj

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1335737/chamele...cdboot%20SL.zip

contents:

everything you need, just add any extra kexts you want and MAKE SURE YOU ADD your efi strings and graphics mode to the provided boot.plist! the cdboot is version 655 from the upcoming chameleon release which has native snow leopard support! amazing work guys!

1. Download the package and extract it to your home folder. (AKA /Users/yournamehere/)

2. Add EFI strings and graphics mode to provided boot.plist

3. Add any extra kexts that you want inside the Preboot.dmg.

4. DSDT.aml loading didn't work for me. the dvd still boots fine, it just resets my cmos. If this happens, just go last known good and youll be fine.

5. Once your all done you need to make an eltorito bootable iso, enter this in terminal tehn type your password when it asks:

sudo hdiutil makehybrid -o cdboot.iso cdboot/ -iso -hfs -joliet -eltorito-boot cdboot/cdboot -no-emul-boot -hfs-volume-name "SL boot132" -joliet-volume-name "SL boot132"

6. once this is done burn to cd-rw

7. reboot, and boot from cd. you'll get about 4 or 5 ebios errors, then the disk will load. When your at the chameleon screen, take out the boot cd and swap in your snow leopard dvd and press F5. you should then see Mac OS X Install DVD appear. i usually boot in -v to make sure i know what goes wrong if it hangs.

8. Install Snow like you would. youll obviously need to do to boot from the cd again to get into the SL install once your done. then install chameleon to EFI or whatever and swap in the netkas 10.1 boot pcefi file until the new chameleon release comes out. Probably best to use rc1 of chameleon.

Enjoy

All credits to the chameleon team, netkas, and anyone else striving to make this a reality. you are the kings of osx86. i merely put this guide together!

special thanks to noob766 who has been testing disks tirelessly with me this week.

Would this be the fix for the BLACK screen we get once the retail DVD starts to load? This seems to be my issue. Here is my string for my graphics card (GeForce 6600, 128)...

This Chameleon CDBoot is notorious for the following error message during the installation process:

"Install failed. Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer The installer could not make the computer start up from the volume <volume name>. You may need to select your disk using Startup Disk utility. Click restart and try again".

This error runs rampant with this Chameleon CDBoot project and it always rears its ugly head at the end of the installation process.

Why isn't this fixed yet?

I don't want to hear about faulty hardware or faulty discs (CDBoot or SL). I have replaced the DVD DL drive. I have created multiple (verified) CDBoot and SL discs. I have replaced my RAM.

If you take the same .dmg file (which falters with CDBoot) and restore it to another hard drive or a USB flash disk, the installation runs like it should and finishes completely.

I also don't want to hear an answer of "Don't worry about it. Just hit the restart button and boot into your brand new Snow Leopard installation. Why don't I want to hear this? I'll tell you why!

The install process never "PROPERLY" finishes, and leaves all kinds of remnants (a folder filled with .pkg files) on the root of the Snow Leopard volume and many other problems.

Why isn't this fixed yet?

I hear ya.

I'm with you, Nihilator. This problem has been ignored and should be addressed. I wasted alot of time on this problem and then found out it was a CDBoot issue.

This won't be fixed though. The Chameleon team will tell you that they distribute the source and to go ahead and fix it yourself.

Sign of the times.

I have burnt the iso successfully, after adding EFI string and graphics and then the CD boots fine, and I press F5 and the SL DVD retail Disc appears. Choosing it and press enter, the apple logo comes up and then Kernel Panic... Running a D5400XS mobo ( Skulltrail ). Ideas?

Yes, many people are receiving the "Install Failed" at the end of the Snow Leopard installation process. The error occurs at the 10% mark of installation. This means 90% of the installation completes before the error appears.

This problem has not been fixed yet. It's related to "Bless" according to the logs.

Thanks for the info, it helped me a bit but I think I'll wait for a new distro, I have Snow Leopard running but after 1 minute I get a kernel panic.

Are you using the same kext you used in Leopard or did you get new 10.6 versions of them. Some, like VoodooPS2 work ok in 10.6 as long as you are booting a 32bit kernel. Others need a 10.6 version of the kext.

  • 1 month later...

I wonder if its possible to create some kind of universal preboot from a 'live cd' version of Leopard (ie 10.5), which then installs Snow Leopard and patches your DSDT for you....

or how about an installer DVD which runs Leopard (10.5) but contains Snow Leopard's (10.6) installation packages?

As the newer PC EFI isn't being used i believe and so GraphicsEnabler doesn't work

I've managed to get upto a blocky graphics with the 4870 using the following.

-Nihilator

Yes, many people are receiving the "Install Failed" at the end of the Snow Leopard installation process. The error occurs at the 10% mark of installation. This means 90% of the installation completes before the error appears.

This problem has not been fixed yet. It's related to "Bless" according to the logs.

Hey geniuses know why this happens? There is NO BOOTLOADER! Yes its because bless can't make the drive bootable because its a friggin hackintosh and so doesn't boot like a normal mac. Once you install Chameleon it works PERFECTLY! Please refrain from showing your ignorance it just looks bad. Also to remove the temp stuff just go into terminal become super user and do an rm on the folder. Jeez you guys really just like to complain about stuff you don't know huh? This is the reason why all the legit people are leaving the OSX86 community.

ON TOPIC LEGIT GUIDE! I practically was able to do this in my sleep! Thanks for making such an easy guide to follow!

Oh this one works for sure, not good but it do work. As a few other of these 132 boot disc guides do too. It´s kind of hard to install chameleon if you don´t already have a working osx or osx86 install.

Let me reiterate this guide works very well AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE RIGHT KEXT AND EFI STRING. I don't see what you mean by saying installing Chameleon is hard without osx or osx86 install USING THIS LETS YOU INSTALL SNOW LEOPARD! When its done installing you just use the boot132 disc again to get into Chameleon then select your OSX partition! After your in then you can install Chameleon no problem! To be fair I've been doing this stuff for like a month now but still at least ask instead of assuming you know how it all works!

EDIT: I retract my comment about my being so experienced as I just noticed your been a member for quite a while longer than me at least the other three guys spouting incorrect information haven't been around much longer than I

Sorry bud I missunderstood thought you where saying this one did´nt work without all the hocus pocus people all over this place say you need to get SL up running. I´m glad it works completely ok once you have chameleon in there. Did´nt come that far myself when I tried it out just got the basic install upp running. At that time we had a few 132 boot guides and there was another one that suited me better.

Lots of the other guides where talking about you just had to have a usb stick/memory and they where ever so detailed and complecated. Some even said you could´nt use the 132 boot method. It showed that was´nt true and I found out pretty much like you have here that if you just work a bit with it and use your your mind you´ll figure it out. I think there where at least 3 SL 132 boot guides around when SL was released and people where just so eager to get SL up running and never had the paitience so after a few trys with no go they jumped over to the usb based guides.

All you need is one of these 132 boot discs, figure out how it works and install SL but leave printers for now and you´ll get a basic install upp running. If I remember it right, it´s been a while now you then need no more than three kexts, find your uuid for your harddrive, get fassls dstdt patcher, download and edit drhurts chameleon installer a bit. Really no hard stuff at all.

I don´t even use any strings and I have two pcie videocards (4 displays if I want) with QE and everything working ok running on a Nvinject.kext I edited a bit.

So yeah I agree this stuff works.

We´re a very mixed society here and there are lots of us like myself that does´nt have english as our first language so that´s probably the reason why people fail. Back then I wqs thinking for myself cause I was pissed of about everybody saying it was so complecated and you could´nt do this and you just had to do bla bla bla that I ought to write a guide myself. Thinking about it for a while I found out my English is´nt good enough so I´d probably just mess things up even more for the guys here :D so I never did.

Maby you can write us a bulletproof one that´s really easy to understand. Please do so cause I´m pretty sure it´s not that people are lazy or stupid it´s just a language related problem. I mean honestly just imagine having to learn to understand and comunicate in another language before you can get any info at all out of a comunity like this. We´re talking about years of traning just to be able to say anything that makes sence at all.

Peace man

My apologies then it seems I was rash in my judgement, but thats just because I've seen one too many people complaining when they shouldn't be recently. I do agree not everyone is lazy and some do have other problems but then you also see a bunch of who just want instant gratification without any work so I get worked up I bit sometimes sorry :D

Just curious- would I be able to use kexts from my 10.5.8 set-up to make SL work? I've tried various different ways to install SL, but none have worked for me yet and I think I'd like to try this route next

BurnOut007,

It is better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

You don't know what your talking about.

In 10.5, the "bless" issue was not a problem with Boot-132. Boot-132 installed 10.5 with no errors (AKA: "Install Failed" error).
