Windows Media Player 11 is coming in BETA form on the 17th.

but I found an early release on demonoid.com if anyone is interested.

I give it a 9/10.

the interface is very slick and smooth and seeing all your album art seems realy cool. they also have that URGE service up and I think this could be real compitition with the itumes music store.

I downloaded it yesterday. I have to say, it's really nice. It actually makes iTunes look bad. I think the best feature that they've added was having Media Player download album art for your music. I can post screen shots if you want. I'd give it a 9/10, too.

I found MP 11 to be very confusing navigation-wise. I also didn't like the sloppy job that it did in organizing my music. If one detail of your song doesn't match information online (eg: you classify the Demon Days album as "techno," and an online source classifies it as "techno / rock"), then it fails to fetch the album artwork. If any information differs in the slightest way, it refuses to categorize two songs under the same album, even if they should be. The result is a very sloppy library.

What really bugs me is how it ignores album art that's embedded in the mp3s in general. It attempts to go online to retrieve the art itself, and often the images it finds are cruddy quality. I already have high-quality album art added to each MP3 via iTunes, which goes to waste in MP 11.

Although I admit its really shiney and has a nice concept.

In design: 9/10. Beats iTunes hands-down. Navigating through artwork just looks great. I enjoyed this type of idea in Media Center 2005 and I'm glad to see MS is still using it.

In functionality: 2/10. Horrible, confusing, and disorganized.

the only way a music store can become a legitimate contender is if iPod supports the format. I'm pretty sure URGE uses WMA, which will never be supported on the iPod. Remember, the iPod has like a 70~80% marketshare of all mp3 players out there.

It doesn't really matter if the interface is slick, if it doesn't work with iPod, it ain't gonna fly.

so far I give WMP 11 3/10.

I don't like it. I find iTunes to still be the superior victor here.

WMP's interface is still hard to use and not very intuitive. That's one thing about iTunes I always loved. It was easy to use. Even if you've never used it before.

So far I'm going to give WMP 11 the same thumbs down I've given to Vista.

Yeah, I think WMP remain a big mess. 11 it's a notable improvement from 10, but it's still behind iTunes in terms of usability.

Yes, you're right. But it is still beta, so it does still stand a chance. Microsoft are beginning to see that usability is a major factor on the operating system as a whole. I personally think that WMP11 should start fresh, and work up from a different layout. The problem is there are too many things to click...

One thing that I really don't like about WMP is that it always plays the next song in your library after you have finished the current song. I like that in iTunes, you can choose which songs you want to play without them all playing one after the next.

I msut dissagree. WMP 11 is very nice and slick. I think that if iTunes takes this as seriously they would change there interface rand add album art of something similar to that of WMP 11. i have been using WMP 11 for about a week and can say that I would use WMP 11 over iTunes. it looks kinda old becuase its all text based. and considering that I dont ahve an iPod I dont realy need iTunes except if I wanted to change my music to mono.

Oh man! That sucks!

I am currently wanna try out the beta and WMP is still indexing my mp3-collection for more than 40 minutes now (only 60 %)?!?!!? :)

I mean iTunes isn't fast either but compared to this ......... ;)

I also think I do like the clean and easy iTunes interface more. I have used Winamp 2 for ages before I started using iTunes. So I believe (without further testing because WMP is still busy) I will still using iTunes, even on windows! :)

It is only Beta though guys... Give it a chance ;)

Ok, but I don't think that we'll see too many changes in the full release. Right now it's not able to read correctly the tags from my music files. Or the album art.

Maybe we'll see some speed improvements... No way it will have a better organised interface or something like that. Anyway nothing radical. Everything must be done in steps. Small steps. It seems that is the only pace Microsoft knows.

Well, WMP11 it's not that bad. Only that, at least from my point of view, it was not what I was expecting. Now I'm waiting patiently and hopefully for WMP 12. :D
