This is a retail copy of SL? Nothing else is supported.

Yes :D I called the ISO {censored} because of frustration during dmg conversion and to keep the name short :)

You don't need to convert DMG to ISO for Workstation 7, mount the DMG directly. Is this a restore DVD for a specific Mac? If so that won't work as it has to be the one you buy for installation on any Mac. Otherwise I am stumped.

Donk, one really important thing to ask. By Restore DVD of Mac OS X you don't mean drop in DVD? Because if so, you can still install OS X. I read this trick somewhere on insanelymac, don't remember where:

When Leopard DVD boots up, start Time Machine from menu bar and then close it. Continue button for installation will now not be greyed out.

Again, if this is already said, sorry for repeating ; )

Cheeeeeeeeers and keep up with amazing work!

I meant the grey DVDs that come with a machine. I do believe it is possible to do but needed hack of certain script sin the package. Is this trick meant for these DVDs, because if so I hadn't heard about it before. I do not have an image to try as my Mac originally came with Tiger an dI have bought Leopard and Snow leopard upgrade DVDs.

Might ask my friend who has all sorts of Macs to get a DMG to try.

Parallels V5 works really good out of the box. Picks up my soundcard, network, usb printer, windows can be moved between multiple displays. It integrates very smoothly with osx, seems it needs no tweaks. Might be something worth checking out for you guys, compairing Fusion 3 VS Parallels 5 Parallels wins easy. I can even squeeze a few tracks with a bunch of effects loaded out my good old Emagic Logic platinum for Windows.

Sorry not sure that this is relevant. The post is abut running Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware under VMware such as Workstation and ESXi.

Thanks for your work to-date. Very informative.

I haven't seen this posted yet so I have to ask as I am a bit stumped.

I have followed the steps in the PDF guide for VMX setup, etc and have been able to get my VMWare virtual machine to launch the installer from the DVD and go through all OSX installer wizard (doing this with version 10.6). In the OSX installer wizard I have setup via Disk Utility a partition and erased the VM disc and all is good. The install of OSX then completes successfully.

Now that the install has completed successfully the VM reboots and when booting the VM hard drive is seen as having no OS, so the OSX installer via the DVD starts again!? My boot order is HD first, DVD second.

I can't figure out why when the VM boots up the OS which installed successfully isn't seen. I have tried this several times with little changes in my VM setup and my partitioning setup in the OSX install, but same results every time. VM boots up and acts like no OS is on the hard drive, so defaults to DVD and starts the install process again.

Any opinions on this? I have attached the VMX and Log files that you typically request.

Thanks.

All looks OK, except if you have installed Snow Leopard (10.6) then your guestOS = "darwin-64" needs to be amended to guestOS = "darwin10-64" your current setting is for Leopard not SL.

Couple of other thngs to be sure of:

Your Intel CPU supports VT-X and is enabled in the BIOS, you are running VM Workstation 7 or player 3, and your base O/S is 64-bit, if you want to run a 64-bit guest. Finally you have updated the darwin-200 zip with the snowy or wks7 darwin.iso before installing into your VM W7 or P3 and you have a retail copy of SL.

Sorry if this is repeating what you have done, but worth a check.

Hope this helps, good luck!

As everybody round here already know it´s possible to run osx on non apple hardware and thinking about all the advantages like pratically no risk for virus when you´re on the internet etc etc to me it seems it´s better to try to get Win os working on a PC running osx. Probably easier too since non Apple hardware pretty much is a PC and probably runs win os better than osx even virtualized.

So some guys looking at this thread might want to do do it the other way around and if so I found out Parallels is the way to go. Hell I can even get good old Emagic PC Logic to work pretty ok.

My last post in this thread, only thought I should tell the guys here.

Good luck

OK understand where you are coming from now. I guess the use of Parallels versus Fusion is a personal thing and dependent on what you are trying to achieve. I beta tested both Parallels Desktop 5 and VMware Fusion 2 and found the VMware product way more reliable, but that was on real Apple hardware. IF you are going this route I suggest that you get the trials first and find out which is best for your particular hardware and usage requirements.

Thank you for the info. I am running wks 7 on Windows 7 64bit.

I know didn't follow the instructions correctly for the install of the darwin-200.zip package, I just dumped the darwin.iso for wks7 in the wks7 install folder. I will repeat some setup steps and do those I missed and try again.

I did try and update the .iso, but the install creates the related .sig package, which is required, so uninstall the darwin-200 and re-install the updated version with the darwin.iso from snowy or wks7 zip.

Hopefully you should then be up and running, cheers!

Cool! It works guys! Thanks for that little bit of help at the end here, it was what I needed. Running this on a laptop Core 2 Duo. A little sluggish, but not bad. NIC worked right out of the box. Sound doesn't so I will follow the instructions to try to get basic audio working.

Next is to see if I can duplicate this on my primary system. An i7 , MSI mobo and Creative Labs X-Fi card. Hope I can!

Thanks again.

Hello Donk:

Thanks to you for your effort on this project.

I have carefully followed your instructions...(I have R'dTFM many times :star_smile: ) and I have a working Leopard vm running on VMWare server 2.0, Intel Core 2 duo CPU, XP Pro.

I have upgraded it to 10.5.8 from the original install of 10.5.6 with no trouble. I noticed in your manual that you recommend booting with v f and x flags after upgrade but I was unable to hit F8 fast enough to do this. Should I worry? What do these flags do?

Also, I have been unable to get the audio working. I have used KextHelper to install the AppleAC97Audio.kext. The Kext installs with seemingly no problems, but on reboot I still show no audio device under sounds in System Preferences. I've also tried using the option to reset the permissions while installing - no luck. Can you point me to a tutorial on installing this properly. I have searched but I've not found a good one.

Thanks!

Good News, on the audio front try Zenith432's excellent drivers at the following link:

OK, the audio problem can be resolved with Zenith432's excellent audio drivers at the following site:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/files/

Version 1.0.2 for Leopard should be installed, and following a re-boot audio should work and can be seen under Go>Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup>Audio Devices, should be AC97 Audio (PCM), but it will still not show up in About This Mac More Info...

You can also alter the Audio Output format between 44.1KHz and 48KHz if you get any issues.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

I tried your tutorial in running SL in Vmware and when i try to install SL, after a few seconds i have the error: "the cpu has been disabled by the guest operating system".

Things to consider: i have an E8200 Intel cpu with VT enabled in bios, i tried adding paevm="TRUE" in vmx, i tried 2 SL iso images (the one "made by Hazard" and the one "patched for PC", the Retail one has another extension - not iso, so i can't use it in vmware).

What else can i try, or what do you think is the problem ? Thanks.

Hi all,

First huge thanks to Donk! Impressive work.

I am totally newbie with Mac and OSX and just managed to install SL in WS7+W7Pro with instructions found from here after little struggle with wrong darwin.iso first... It took pretty long to read all posts so far and try to learn. But now I think I got pretty good idea about this case. :rolleyes: Only thing to do is to learn to use SL now :D

I had also this VT-x problem at first but that "cold boot" helped me for that. I have noticed this problem before with Ubuntu64bit but could not fix it then. Now I know that fix is cold boot when VM begins to mess up. I am not sure yet is that VT-x problem coming after I set my Windows to sleep and wake it up or is problem coming from somewhere else? Its my guess causing this problem...

I also had to convert SL.dmg to SL.iso. I did it with UltraISO - excellent program! Can handle converting, virtual disk(s), etc.

Computer specs:

Abit IP35-e, Q6600@3GHz, 8G ram, HD4870

Windows 7Pro, VMWare WS 7

.vmx attached (if there is something to improve pls let me know!)

btw. Just finished all available updates and everything seems to work still :D

All looks OK, couple of lines you may wish to change in your .vmx file

keyboard.vusb.enable = "TRUE"

mouse.vusb.enable = "TRUE"

monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

monitor.virtual_mmu = "software"

Also enhanced graphics and audio drivers are available from Zenith432 at the location below:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/files/

Turn off all the power settings within SL, and preferrably Windows, all forms of sleep, hibernation etc. cause issues.

Hope this helps!

I already found those drivers from earlier posts and next I will try install them. Power saving settings are off already.

Need to change those lines back to vmx. I did those changes when I installed but update changed back to defaults?
