For those that thought that Apple would discontinue the 17" MacBook Pro, good news: Apple updated them. They have 8h battery life, as well as 1000 cycles of battery durability. They dropped the FireWire 400 port as well, but included a third USB port. Apple also introduced iLife '09 and iWork '09, and a new bundle that includes all software(Mac OS X Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09) for less than the price of the three separated. The new MacBook Pro has a non-user-replaceable battery, using new chemicals in addition to standard lithium polymer. The battery is 40% bigger and uses custom-shaped(ie. rectangular) cells. BTW, Toshiba used to have batteries in their old laptops that had custom-shaped cells, so they're actually reinventing the wheel. :(

I'm extremely happy that Apple brought back the Matte option but also really let down that they're only allowing the Matte Screen on this particular laptop. The 15" MacBook Pro isn't even getting the Matter Screen Option.

Also if you want the Matte Screen on the 17" MacBook Pro you have to pay for it! I hope Apple will give there other notebooks this option too eventually.

I guess people are just discouraged by the majority of iBook batteries - I've yet to have one that hasn't needed replaced, and it's that way with most people I know. It's the same way with iPod batteries for a lot of the older gens.

Personally, I bought a 17-inch MBP (early 2008) just last week (first post on it here) and I much prefer it to this new iteration. The new laptops are a little much for me, they look nice but feel almost plastic-y. I absolutely despise the complete lack of mouse button (I mean, what the *fuck*). The only thing I *would* want is this new battery, be it user-replaceable or not (seriously, Apple's battery prices are not that bad, and you can always do it yourself, it might just not be a 2-second job.) 8 hours of battery life on a laptop like this is no joke.

I was a bit wary of the trackbutton or whatever you wanna call it, but I've gotten quite used to it on my 15" Unibody MBP. It is, however, very finnicky if you boot into Windows. I find that you pretty much have to use a mouse for that, but I only use Windows for Autocad anyway so its fine.

News flash:

The whole trackpad is a button.

-wink- ;D

Obviously I am well aware, and that is why I am saying it's a piece of shit.

wow, the new trackpad is just gorgeous! when i work on a windows laptop now, i hate that tiny useless trackpad!

the new trackpad with gestures works very good and there is no need for a mouse anymore on macbook, i even prefer the trackpad to my logitech mx mouse

At the same time, Microsoft doesn't make the laptops, so Microsoft has no saying in how big the trackpads are. Where as Apple, makes the OS, and makes the laptops. I think you get where this is going.
