In what has to be one of the most earthshaking announcements the technology industry has seen in years, Apple today announced its Boot Camp system for dual booting OS X and Windows XP. From the Apple site:

More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.

Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data, though you will need to bring your own copy to the table, as Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows. Boot Camp will burn a CD of all the required drivers for Windows so you don't have to scrounge around the Internet looking for them.

For your convenience, Boot Camp burns a CD with all the Mac-specific drivers for Windows:

Graphics

Networking

Audio

AirPort wireless

Bluetooth

The Eject key (on Apple keyboards)

Brightness control for built-in displays

This is obviously Apple's move to ensure that they maintain control over the booting environment of their computers and it shows that they are listening to the huge numbers that are asking for a simple dual boot solution.

So check out the Boot Camp and let us know what you think in our dedicated Dual Booting forum! As always, our community is fast - don't miss the technical discussion going on here!

EDIT: Here is Apple's FAQ for the beta of Boot Camp.

only Steve Jobs could make "Windows on Intel" such an earth shaking announcement. ha ha.

Not false, but is Apple keeps his quality standards, it will become a real challenger in PC universe.

I'm already thinking about changing my HP for an Apple.

The best of both universes... really appealing isn't it ?

So it was true after all... (if you didn't know something like this have been rumored for quite some time)

This will increase apple sales fore sure, people that like OS X but need Windows can easily use both systems.

people that are considering switching but are unsure fell feel safe, because they don't like OS X they can use Windows without a hitch on it.

And people that only like the appearance of the hardware can buy it too (and hopefully eventually convert to OS X)

Now the only thing missing is Leopard's virtualization

EFI and BIOS

Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries.

Does this mean xp will pickup the right hardware and drivers. Also might be a nice way to dual boot a hackintosh, wonder if it works on are hackintosh.

I just love the logo Apple uses for Windows. :))))

Lol - I guess they didn't want to infringe copyright!

I like the disclaimer on Apple's announcement:

Word to the Wise

Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes.

Never a truer word spoken...

For those interested, here's info on when it expires:

The term of this License shall commence upon your installation or use of the Apple Software and will terminate automatically without notice from Apple upon the next commercial release of the Apple Software, or September 30, 2007, whichever occurs first. Upon the termination of this License, you shall cease all use of the Apple Software and destroy all copies, full or partial, of the Apple Software.

Because if you think you have the best OS ever try to put it everywhere ...

Or, if you think you have the "best OS ever", allow your own hardware run it, as well as run Windows, and you now have a product that can do everything everyone else’s can do, plus run the "best OS ever". Not a bad "value add" to help move hardware... but something that would be completely lost if the "best OS ever" was legally able to run on generic PCs.
