Should Maxxuss (and others) be paid for their efforts?

As per this post, I wanted to start a thread on this topic because I thought it was interesting!

Do you think that hackers such as [EDIT: Removed content violating DMCA (the line contained a link, sorry Mash) (who is the very meaning of "1337") should be paid for their efforts? Would you give them money?

EDIT: Just to clarify - I'm asking this just as a general question, not because I think they should be given money. What you do outside of this forum isn't our responsibility, but I can assure you that a "Support the hackers" fund won't be started here.

Wow, now that makes me fly into a rage! How stupid are you?

If you want to stir Apple's wrath, well, then go ahead!

Let me state this clearly:

The day this happens -- hackers benefitting financially from their work that basically (don't let us lie about that) lays the foundations for the worldwide piracy of Mac OS X for Intel -- Apple's lawyers have the perfect reason to close down all sites that are affiliated with them in any way and sue all the people responsible for those sites that they can get their hands on. I'm pretty confident they can find more than one thing on this site here that's legally not 100% O.K. and can serve as a perfect pretext for such actions. In the past, they gave short shrift to people for much less. I just wish to remind you of the guy who advertised his cafepress.com-shop featuring "MAC OS x86" mugs and T-shirts on this forum, and how quickly he got shut down after that.

I want to add emphatically that as much as I appreciate Maxxuss' work and welcome it that the restrictions of Mac OS X are broken as a proof of concept, I do not want to see that hacking Mac OS X becomes some kind of a commercial venture. I know this won't be even necessary as Apple employees are constantly monitoring the web and discussing possible legal actions, but the first time I will see that such a paypal account has been established and is promoted on a site like this, I will immediately inform the Apple legal department and ask PayPal whether the financial support of copyright infringement complies with their "Acceptable Use Policy".

Apart from this, I think it should be rather clear to ANYBODY that after Intel Macs have become a commercial product that can be bought in the stores, it is very likely that Apple will take a tougher line against piracy and hacking activities, anyway. This site will be facing a hard time if it continues like this.

Terry is 100% right. Not sure about the super-sized typing but we'll let him off this time

I don't know if Maxxuss would want paying anyway - most hackers do it for the fame and glory!

Edit - I'm not with Terry on the bit about snitching to Apple if someone does try to solicit payment. Much as I agree with his sentiments that one sounds a bit too much like telling teacher. Apple will be onto it fast enough without help. Besides, reporting something to Apple would rather draw attention to yourself and your browsing habits, wouldn't it?

Terry -

You're exactly right - to be honest, I don't think that anyone should be paid for hacking anything, especially if it has the remote possibility of hurting Apple.

I started this thread because I wanted to bring up discussion (which it obviously has) but be sure that this site has no intention of giving money or even just generally supporting hackers.

I don't dissagree with paying hackers like maxxus (who, might i add, has not harmed a computer or code in the traditional sense in any way through this "hacking") as strongly as terry.

However, if we begin to pay hackers for software, for example, through donations, how long will it take before the software simply goes commercial? Or must at least be purchased in order to be obtained? And how long after that will freeware disappear?

Just look at what happened to linux: most of the work done on it is now done by companies. sure it's still free, but i think that's 'cuz of its reputation: the driving force behind it. But still, what about servers with linux: i checked it out about a year ago, and the prices were not really THAT far off from microsoft... linux really has been commercialised.

So yeah. my argument is that they shouldn't be paid because they did not begin their work for money, and because if we pay maxxus, we may eventually see others rising to be paid as well. If you WANT to be paid, go work for apple!!!

I completely agree with Terry, however simply reporting this site to Apple's Legal department will not only probably delay the release of the OS BY MONTHS, but give him a terrible reputation, and probably will not benefit him any way.

Maxxuss and all of the other "hackers" who have worked to discover the underpinnings of the operating system have done great work, but to pay them would be extremely counterproductive to our hopes of finally getting a straight install of OS X on our computers.

Kind of like Vista.

I think even if Maxxuss would like to get some money "contributions", he won't post this information, cause then he could be very fast locked-on (i think). Despite of it, he haven't even reply to this post, so we can assume that he is not interested in this.

All the best Maxxuss! You Rock!!!

p.s.

sory for my english, i hope you understand what i mean

best regards

Respect and admiration of others-means more then any amount can buy.

i agree with terry but i put a stop on the snitching part. That will just hurt a community who from what i see is very close to its project and keeps its followers well informed.

Snitching is not the way to go leave that for the corporate cut-throats.

by the way m******s you rule man-im pretty sure alot of people will agree with me on this when i say-you have made the history books just think about it. I really appreciate your work and thanks to you apple have a new customer. I fell in love with front row and the ilife apps now i cant live without them.
