Our good old friend the Financial Times says that Apple and 20th Century Fox have reached an agreement to sell rental movies on the iTunes Store. The movies are expected to come in a sort of limited-playing window, that would only allow customers to watch these movies for a certain amount of time. Another important aspect is that, on Fox DVDs, people will be able to load them onto their computer and then import them onto your iPod, without use of software like HandBrake.

what if you don't own the movie... netflix?

While we might not need HandBrake, they are still RENTALS and will expire. I don't want to rent a movie.

Not if you buy the DVD physically. I believe the rentals are digital downloads.

90% of everyone I know just goes to blockbuster or uses netflix, most people aren't that interested in owning every movie they've ever watched. And since you're on this site I wouldn't exactly peg you as the ideal itunes customer ^_^

Not that I intend to ever use iTunes but does anyone think there might be a way to remove the expiry date on the rentals? -_-

It should be as simple as removing the DRM from songs. :D
